OBJECTIVETo investigate the incidence of depression and its etiological factors in patients with cryptorchidism 6-16 years after surgical treatment.
METHODSUsing Self-Rating Depression Scale and Correlation Factor Questionnaire, we investigated the incidence of depression symptoms among 70 patients with cryptorchidism 6-16 years after surgical treatment and another 70 healthy males as controls, and analyzed the related factors of depression symptoms.
RESULTSThe incidence rate of depression symptoms was 50% in the cryptorchidism patients postoperatively, extremely significantly higher than 4.3% in the control group (χ2 = 23.5, P <0.01). Multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that the main risk factors of depression symptoms were worries about natural fertility (F = 15.8992, P <0.01), dissatisfaction with scrotal appearance (F = 4.6003, P <0.05), and the status of being married (F = 4.1002, P <0.05).
CONCLUSIONSymptoms of depression often occur in cryptorchidism patients after operation, and the major etiological factors are infertility, dissatisfaction with scrotal appearance, and the status of being married.

Objective To investigate the effect and mechanism of tripterygium wilfordii combined with aescine in treatment of acute lung injury (ALI) following trauma. Methods A total of 120 patients with posttraumatic ALI were divided into four groups:tripterygium wilfordii + aescine group (combined group),tripterygium wilfordii group, aescine group, and control group according to random number table, with 30 patients per group.Regardless of the same conventional therapy, the patients in combined group were treated by orally or gastrically administered tripterygium wilfordii multiglycoside as well as aescine intravenously, once a day for 12 days; on the contrary, the same method but only with tripterygium wilfordii or aescine was respectively performed in tripterygium wilfordii and aescine groups.Blood gas analysis before and after treatment, length of ICU stay, fatality rate and incidence of ARDS in each group were observed.Changes in levels of inflammatory mediators (TNF-oα,IL-1,IL-6 IL-8,etc)were detected at days 4,8,and 12 after medication. Results Shorter length of ICU stay and lower ARDS incidence as well as 12-day fatality rate were detected in each treatment group as compared with control group, especially in combined group (P < 0.05).Respiratory rate,PaO2 and oxygenation index (PaO2/FiO2) in each treatment group presented better amelioration than those in control group and especially better results were observed in combined group (P < 0.05).Plasma levels of TNF-α,IL-1,IL-6,and IL-8 in each treatment group were lower than those in control group (P < 0.05).Conclusions Tripterygium wilfordii and aescine havetherapeutic effect on posttraumatic ALI.Moreover, synergetic use of the two drugs achieves synergistic effect and better outcome.

Chinese Journal of Cardiology 2010;38(5):411-414
OBJECTIVETo compare right atrial structural remodeling and the expression of matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) and tissue inhibitors (TIMP) between patients with unstable angina (UA) and myocardial infarction (MI).
METHODSRight atrial appendages were obtained from 18 patients with UA and 22 patients with MI undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) operations. MMP-1, -3, -7, -9 and TIMP-1 protein expressions were detected by immunohistochemistry and RT-PCR. Echocardiography was performed before CABG.
RESULTSThe left and right atrial diameter, left ventricular diameter and mRNA levels of MMP-3, MMP-9 and TIMP-1 were significantly higher in MI group than those in UA group [LAD: (40.8 +/- 4.2) mm vs. (33.1 +/- 5.1) mm, P < 0.01; RAD: (44.1 +/- 6.8) mm vs. (28.8 +/- 6.0) mm, P < 0.01; LVEDD: (48.9 +/- 6.0) mm vs. (39.7 +/- 7.1) mm, P < 0.05; MMP-3: 0.39 +/- 0.18 vs. 0.28 +/- 0.07, P < 0.05; MMP-9: 0.81 +/- 0.21 vs. 0.55 +/- 0.20, P < 0.01; TIMP-1: 1.79 +/- 0.89 vs. 0.94 +/- 0.47, P < 0.01]. MMP-1, MMP-7 levels were similar between the 2 groups (MMP-1: 0.14 +/- 0.06 vs. 0.10 +/- 0.08, P > 0.05; MMP-7: 0.25 +/- 0.05 vs. 0.23 +/- 0.06, P > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONRight atrial up-regulation of MMP-3, MMP-9 and TIMP-1 levels may contribute to the right atrial structural remodeling in MI patients.

AIM: To estimate the pooled prevalence of myopia among primary school students in mainland China during 1980- 2013. Myopia had become a growing public health issue, with high prevalence rates in mainland China, particularly among children. However, we still had no population-based nationwide studies of the prevalence of myopia among primary school students in recent years. METHODS: Wanfang, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure and PubMed databases were searched independently until Dec. 31, 2013 to identify relevant articles. Data from the eligible articles were extracted by two reviewers. All of the data analyses were conducted using Meta-Analyst software (version 3. 13, USA).
RESULTS: Thirty - seven eligible studies published between 1980 and 2013 were selected with a total of 245248 individuals. The pooled prevalence of myopia among the included individuals was 26. 5% (95% CI: 21. 8% -31. 7%). The prevalence of myopia increased with age (from 8. 4%at 6-8y to 57. 4% at 12-14y).
CONCLUSION: The pooled prevalence of myopia among primary school students in mainland China was much higher than that of western countries or regions. The prevalence of myopia increased with age among primary school students. This study should be valuable for myopia prevention and treatment in mainland China.

Journal of Huazhong University of Science and Technology (Medical Sciences) 2014;34(3):387-92
A surgical technique of lateral crus strut graft to correct the deformity of nostril contour and improve asymmetric nostril shape by autologous rib cartilage was reported. Thirty-five patients (20 males and 15 females), with a mean age of 19 years (range of 16-26 years) were included in this study. All of the patients suffered moderate to severe unilateral cleft lip nostril deformity and underwent surgical technique of lateral crus strut graft by autologous rib cartilage to correct the asymmetric nostril contour from 2010 to 2012. The views of the nostril contour on both sides were reviewed and some parameters were measured at different time points (preoperatively, and 3 months and one year postoperatively) including the long axis and short axis of the nostrils. The differences in nostrils including long axis, short axis, elliptical area and eccentricity on the both sides were compared at different time points. The differences in the long axis and eccentricity of the nostrils on the two sides were decreased significantly between the preoperative view and postoperative view (P<0.05). The surgical technique of lateral crus graft with autologous rib cartilage is effective to correct the abnormal nostril contour and improve the asymmetry for unilateral cleft clip patients.
