OBJECTIVETo observe the effects of Lignum Sappan (LS) on the growth and metastases of transplanted Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) in mice and investigate its partial mechanism of action.
METHODSC57BL/6 mice were established in LLC model and divided into six groups in random: Group A was untreated; Group B was treated by chemotherapy (CM) only; Groups C-F were treated respectively with low-dose LS, high-dose LS, CM + low-dose LS and CM + high-dose LS, via intragastric administration for 21 successive days. Mice were sacrificed in batches at different time points (d 7, d 14 and d 21) to observe the tumor inhibition rate and the metastases suppressing rate was measured dynamically. Meantime, the CD44 expression in tumor cells was measured by flow cytometry and serum P-selectin concentration was measured by ELISA assay.
RESULTSTumor weight in all treated groups, except Group C, was lower than that in Group A at the three time points (P < 0.05, P < 0.01), and that was lower in Group F than in Group B at the corresponding time points (P < 0.05, P < 0.01). Comparisons of CD44+ in tumor cells showed that as compared with Group A, on d 7, it was lower in Groups B and D (P < 0.01); on d 14, it was lower in Group E (P < 0.01) and Group F (P < 0.05); and on d 21, it was lower in Groups E and F (P < 0.01). As for the concentration of P-selectin, the intergroup comparisons showed that it was lower in Groups B-F on d 7 and in Group F on d 21 than that in Group A (P < 0.05 or P < 0.01), but showed insignificant difference in comparing the Group A with all the treated Groups on d 14 (P > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONLS and CM +LS could inhibit the growth and metastases of LLC, and shows inhibition on CD44 expression in tumor cells and P-selectin level in serum, which may be one of the mechanisms of LS in suppressing tumor metastasis.

Objective To compare the efficacy of laryngeal mask airway-Advance (ALMA) and laryngeal mask airway-Supreme (S-LMA) in patients undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy. Methods Two hundred and forty ASA Ⅰ or Ⅱ patients, aged 18-64 yr,weighing 50-70 kg,undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy, were randomly divided into2 groups (n=120 each):group S-LMA (group S) and group A-LMA (group A).LMA was inserted after induction of general anesthesia with propofol 2.0-2.5 mg/kg,sufentanil 0.2 μg/kg and rocuronium 0.6 mg/kg.After LMA was placed, the rim was immediately inflated and positive pressure was applied to the reservoir bag of anesthesia machine circuit to check for leaks. The plateau pressure at which leaks occurred was recorded.BP,HR,SpO2,PErCO2 and Ppeak were monitored during operation.Fiberoptic bronchoscopy was performed and the placement was scored (0 =unable to see the vocal cords and the ventilation of the lungs was inadequate,4=vocal cords were clearly seen and ventilation was adequate). The rate of successful placement, placement time, the incidence of leaks during operation, duration of anesthesia and surgery, extubation time, emergence time, blood stain on the LMA after being removed, backflow after extubation and postoperatve complacations including sore throat, hoarseness and dysphagia were recorded. The efficacy for airway management and the difficulty of placement were scored. Results There was no significant difference in the rate of successful placement, difficulty of placement scores, blood stain on the LMA after being removed, incidence of backflow, sore throat, hoarseness and dysphogia, anesthesia time, duration of surgery, extubation time and emergence time between the two groups. The placement time was shorter in group S than in group A,but the airway sealing pressure,FOB scores and efficacy for airway management scores were significantly higher and the incidence of leaks during operation was significantly lower in group A than in group S.Conclusion Both A-LMA and S-LMA can provide adequate ventilation during laparoscopic cholecystectomy. The efficacy of A-LMA is better.

In this study, 101 strains of bacteria were isolated from arct ic water and sediment samples. The methanol extracts of the fermented broth prod uced by these strains were screened in vitro for anti-tumor activity on mou se tsFT210 cells using the method of flow cytometry, and screened for antibacter ial activity by the method of paper disk diffusion. The result showed that one strain exhibited anti-tumor activity and eight strains had antibacterial activ ity. The stability of the antibacterial components produced by strain AR084 an d its optimum medium were also studied. The research indicated that arctic bac teria had potential application in pharmaceutics.

Objective The cytotoxic microbial strains isolated from the deep ocean water and sediments were screened, and the secondary metabolites of bioactive fungus c2b were investi- gated. Methods Active bioactive microbial strains were screened using brine shrimp and chro- nic medulla leucocythemia leukocythemia(K562)cell line. The cytotoxic components of fun- gus c2b were isolated by bioassay-guided fractionation and solvent extraction, silica gel col- umn chromatography and preparative HPLC.Their structures were established by pbysico- chemical properties and spectral analyses. The cytotoxicities of compounds were evaluated by SRB method. Results and Conclusion Twenty-nine strains of fungi were isolated.Among them, seven strains showed cytotoxic activities.Six compounds(1~6)were isolated and i- dentified as N-acetyl histamine(1),chrysogine(2),ergosterol peroxide(3),5,8-epidioxy- 24-methylcholesta-6,22-dien-3?-ol(4)cerevisterol(5)and(4E,8E)-N-[(2'R,3'E)-2'-hy- droxy-3'-hexadecenoyl]-1-O-?-D-glycopyranosyl-9-methyl-4,8-sphingadiene(6),respective- ly.Compound 3 and 4 showed median cytotoxicity.

Objective:To validate the clinical value of CT-guided curve-needle percutaneous ethanol injection (CNPEI) for celiac plexus block analgesia. Methods: Thirty-two patients with end-stage cancer, including 13 complicated with extensive retroperitoneal lymph node enlargement and fusion, were enrolled in this study. All patients complained of refractory upper abdominal pain and had received narcotic analgesics and radiotherapy, but the analgesic effect was not good. CT-guided CNPEI was therefore prescribed. Results: The effective rates of CT-guided CNPEI were 100%, 100%, 96.9%, 90.6%, 87.5%, and 84.4% immediately, and at 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 8 weeks, 12 weeks, and 16 weeks after treatment, respectively. All enlarged lymph nodes had obvious necrosis and became shrunk. Conclusion: Combined application of bilateral anterior and posterior diaphragmatic crura block and trans-lymph node block can produce good analgesic effects, and curve-needle puncture make the above technique simpler.

Objective:To validate the therapeutic value of CT-guided percutaneous ethanol injection (PEI) in the treatment of metastatic adrenal tumors. Methods: Thirty-one foci (diameter ranging from 1.5 cm to 7.2 cm) in 25 patients with metastatic adrenal tumors were treated with CT-guided PEI for more than twice. Plain and enhanced CT scans were performed 1-2 months after PEI to observe the size and necrosis of the tumors. Results: Post-PEI enhanced CT scan showed that 18 of the 20 foci with diameters less than 3 cm completely necrotized; 11 foci with diameters between 3 cm and 7.2 cm necrotized partially, and 2 foci completely necrotized after another 2-3 courses of PEI treatment. Conclusion: CT-guided PEI is a simple and minimally invasive means for treatment of metastatic adrenal tumors, and the therapeutic effect is satisfactory.
