OBJECTIVE To explore the value of spiral CT in detecting narrow level of obstructive sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome(OSAHS) through investigating measured parameters of upper airway. METHODS The upper airway levels from the roof of nasopharynx to the inferior border of cricoid cartilage were scanned with spiral CT in 127 OSAHS patients and 52 controls. The coronal and sagittal diameter and the cross sectional areas of palate, uvula, tongue, epiglottis level were measured using image handling workstation. The measured values of each level were divided by the measured values of the cricoid cartilage level, and get relative values. The relative values of the OSAHS patients and controls were compared. RESULTS The relative values of posterior soft palate and uvula region, lingual region and epiglottis regions were statistically different. The difference also existed between genders. The relative values of 46 controls and 17 OSAHS patients were in the normal range. Among 127 OSAHS,the relative values of 110 cases with OSAHS(86.6%) were below the normal range in every region, while in control group, the relative values were found below the normal range in only 6 persons (11.2%).CONCLUSION The relative values of each regions is useful to judge the narrow level of upper airway in OSAHS patients.

Objective To investigate the effect of valsartan on vascular endothelial function and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity(baPWV)in patients with essential hypertension(EH).Methods Blood pressure,NO value and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity were determined and analyzed in 30 patients with essential hypertension before and after therapy of valsartan. Results Both blood pressure and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity wefe re-duced greafly(P<0.05 and P<0.01),while serum NO increased significantly(P<0.01)following valsartan thera-Py,and brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity was well correlated to serum NO(r=-0.71,P<0.01).Conclusions Valsartan is not onlv effective in the control of blood pressure, but also effective in reveming the impaired endothelial function and artery elasticity in patients with essential hypertension,at the same time brachial-ankle pulse wave ve-locity is also good surrogate of endlothelial functional improvement induced by Valsartan therapy.

Aim To study the mechanism of the anti-aging effect of total extract of astragalus(TEA) in mice. Methods MDA content, the activities of Mn-SOD and GSHpx and the reduced to oxidized glutathione (GSH/GSSG) ratio in mitochondria of D-galactose(D-gal) treated mice and 17-month-old mice were measured. Results Treatment with TEA(40 mg?kg-1?d-1 ig) for 10 wk would lower the content of MDA and restore activities of Mn-SOD,GSHpx and GSH/GSSG ratio in mitochondria of D-gal treated mice.Treatment with TEA (40 mg?kg-1 ?d-1 ig) for 3 mon had the same effect on 17-month-old mice. Conclusion TEA has anti-aging effect on D-gal treated mice and 17-month-old mice significantly, probably being related to its anti-oxidative effect.

Background Men who have sex with men (MSM) in China remain at high risk for HIV infection, the proportion of reported HIV/AIDS cases that occurred among MSM rose greatly from 2005 to 2011.HIV testing and counseling is a critical HIV prevention strategy among HIV related high-risk population, including MSM in China. This article aimed to assess the association between receiving HIV testing and high-risk sexual behaviors among MSM in Langfang,Hebei Province,China. Methods Between September and November 2007,233 MSM were recruited to receive an HIV testing intervention.Face-to-face interviews were conducted before HIV testing and 3 months later HIV-related risk behaviors were assessed.Serological testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) was performed. Results Of the recruited 233 MSM,200 completed follow-up.Baseline prevalence was 7.8% for HIV,21.0% for syphilis,15.8% for gonorrhea, and 5.0% for chlamydia.Multivariate analysis indicated that inconsistent condom use (OR=7.9,95% CI:0.9-66.7,P=-0.059) and bleeding during anal sex (OR=5.9,95% CI:1.3-26.2,P=0.019) were risk factors for HIV infection, and group sex (OR=6.6,95% Cl:2.2-19.7,P=-0.001) was a risk factor for syphilis infection at baseline. At 3 months follow-up,among STI-positive MSM,self-reported anal sex fell from 73.1% to 38.5% (P <0.001); group sex fell from 19.2% to 5.8% (P <0.001); and bleeding during anal sex fell from 23.1% to 5.8% (P <0.001).Among STI-negative MSM,the frequency of one-night stands fell from 32.5% to 17.2% (P <0.001),and oral sex rose from 57% to 78.5% (P <0.001).STI-positive MSM were less likely to engage in anal sex compared to STI-negative MSM (x2=5.189,P=0.023).Conclusions HIV testing is an important intervention strategy among MSM.HIV testing services among MSM need to be scaled up,along with comprehensive, tailored interventions including condom promotion and STI treatment.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the treatment efficiency of a new photodynamic therapeutic(PDT) drug synthesized by our laboratory toward MGC803 cells and related mechanisms.
METHODSBleaching method was used to evaluate the photostability of drug upon repetitive illumination. MTT assay was used to determine the ability of new drug killing MGC803 cells after PDT. Laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM) was applied to investigate the subcellular localization of drug in MGC803 cells (mitochondria and/or lysosomes). Hoechst staining and flow cytometry(Annexin V/PI double-staining) were performed to detect the death mode of MGC803 cells after PDT.
RESULTSThis new PDT drug had good stability to light irradiation after repetitive illumination. MTT assay showed no cytotoxicity towards MGC803 cells only by drug or only by irradiation(P>0.05), but intense lethal effect was observed with drug and light combination(P<0.05). The phototoxicity of medicine increased with the elevation of concentration, the LD50 was 1.74 μmol/L, and reaching plateau at the concentration of 3.12 μmol/L, even increasing the concentration. LSCM found that drug localized in lysosomes of MGC803 cells. Hoechst staining showed that the death mode of cells was mainly necrosis and Annexin V/PI double-staining proved this result further.
CONCLUSIONThis new PDT drug is an effective PDT sensitizer for MGC803 cells and the death mode of cells is mainly necrosis.

The clinical application of orbital magnetic resonance (MR) T2-mapping imaging in detecting the disease activity of Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO),and the predictive values of therapy response to intravenous glucocorticoid (ivGC) were investigated.Approved by the local institutional review board (IRB),106 consecutive patients with GO were included in this prospective study. All subjects were divided into two groups according to the patients' clinical activity score (CAS):the CAS positive group (CAS ≥3) or the CAS negative group (CAS <3).T2 relaxation time of extraocular muscles (T2RT;ms) and the areas of four extra-ocular muscles (AEOMs;mm2) were measured by 3D T2-mapping MR sequence before and after methylprednisolone treatment,so as the CAS and some ophthalmic examinations including visual acuity,intra-ocular pressure, eyeball movement, diplopia and proptosis. In addition,24 healthy volunteers were recruited as the control group. The mean T2RT and AEOMs in CAS positive group were higher than those in CAS negative group. Both CAS positive and negative groups had significantly higher mean T2RT and AEOMs than the control group (P<0.01).There was a positive correlation between T2RT and AEOMs values in GO patients, both of them had a positive correlation with CAS and the ophthalmic examinations. It was concluded that to evaluate the activity of GO,CAS was mostly related to inflammation symptoms of ocular surface, more than that,T2RT and AEOMs were also related to abnormal findings of the ophthalmic examinations including high ocular pressure, impaired eyeball movement, diplopia and proptosis.T2RT and AEOMs can reflex the inflammation state of ocular muscles better.CAS combined with 3D T2-mapping MR imaging could improve the sensitivity of detection of active GO so as the prediction and evaluation of the response to methylprednisolone treatment.
