This study introduced the main water resources for daily accommodation in 3 districts of ¢n Biªn, Hßn §Êt, and T©n HiÖp, including pond and lake water (52.72%), rainy water (42.74%) and drilling well water (4.08%). Some risks of pollution of the water resources such as no filtration and polluted drainage for rainy water, sewage surrounding the drilling well and pollution resources far from the drilling well less than 10 m.

Generally through 5 examinations, results showed that generally, well water supplied at Tam Hiep bassis of K Hopital met adequately the quantily and qualitive standards. However, there are still some limitations, in summer, microscopic contamination in poorer than in winter, therefore in summer, chlorine concentration control should be strengthened. The water resource in Hanoi is increasingly polluted which influences on the accommodation and people health. Surface and ground water was serious polluted. The water drainage and sewage processing was old and can not meet the current requirements. Dust, exhaustive, waste, smoke, noise, shaking... were pollution resources. It should have solutions for this situation.

Study on 124 samples of surface water at An Bien, Hon Dat and Tan Hiep districts, Kien Giang province to assess the quality based on biological-chemiphysical index. The situation of polluting the surface water at 3 districts were very serious. Most samples of water hadn't achieved the biological-chemiphysical index. 100% samples of water had examined at 3 areas had Fe content higher than permissible standards. 100% samples of water at Hon Dat had NOZ content higher than permissible standards, at An Bien was 29.5%. 100% samples of surface water at Hon Dat and Tan Hiep had faecal coliform content and E.coli higher than permissible standards.

Background: Nha Trang city located in central Viet Nam, has had dramatic economic development in recent years. The economic development has also leads to changes in the environment. Previous studies showed that cancers were closely related to environmental factors, but there was no study on this issue in Nha Trang city. Objectives: The study aimed to describe the cancer cases that were recorded in the cancer registration and the related environmental factors in Vinh Luong commune and the three neighborhood communes of Nha Trang city. Subjects and method: 192 patients who were diagnosed with cancer in the provincial general hospital and other hospitals from 1/1/2000 to 30/9/2006 and have resided in 4 above communes. Water samples collected from 14 water-wells from these communes were tested for chemical pollution and bacteria index. 20 sites in Van Dang village were tested for radioactive pollution levels. Results: Average crude morbidity of cancer per 100,000 inhabitants per year in Van Dang village and Vinh Luong commune and in the 4 communes as a whole, were 64.9, 51 and 53.3, respectively. The rates for male and female were 65.0 and 41.0, respectively. The most common cancers in women were cervical and breast cancers (11.8% and 9.2%, respectively). For men, leading cancers were liver cancer (31.9%) and lung cancer (14.7%). Almost all of the water samples did not meet the hygiene standard for nitrate (NO3) and coliform. Natural radioactive levels in these 4 communes were normal. Conclusion: Van Dang village had the highest cancer prevalence per 100,000 habitants compared to the other villages of Vinh Luong commune, but it was still lower than that of some other provinces. Most of the water samples collected from the water-wells did not met standard for nitrate levels and coliform.

But the facilities around the wells are not modernized to prevent from contamination of microorganism and the other pollutants. We focussed our intention on the detection of some harmful chemical ingredients and contaminants. A total of 58 wells were examined according to the Standard Methods(APHA) and the following results were obtained : 1) Among the examined 58 wells, only 10 wells adequate to the drinking water standard, 2) 7.9mg of liberated CO2 was found in the Tchun-Ho-Dong Mineral Well, 3) Chemically harmful ingredients were not found, 4) The Mountain Wells were contaminated by Coliform Groups as many as 18 times than rural well.

Waste waters were collected from 6 provincial hospitals (Yen Bai, Viet Tri, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Can Tho, Dong Thap) and resident areas near by them. Basic chemical and physical enviromental parameters were analysed. Findings were as follows: In the hospitals without waste water treatment system: water was polluted severely, even in surrounding residential areas. In the hospital with waste water treatment system: after treatment, the water met B limit value, both for basic physical and chemical parameter. 58% of samples of living water collected at the hospitals without treatment does not met the hygiene standard. Further researches will have to be done to conclude firmly. 25.3% of samples of living water collected at the hospital sites having treatment system also do not meet the hygien standard.

5 bed sand filter, applying biological oxidation, was designed and studied on the treatment of water works. Never using any coagulant agent (drugs), which may cause water pollution in pre-treatment of head water, the author attempt a high rate filtration by the microorganism (nitrofication bacteria) end plant which populate in multi layer sand beds. The result are as follows ; In order to evaluate the oxygen effect on filtration, oxygen was injected in aeration tank attached to each filter tank while filtration, and NH3 was tested as a representative ingredient. It was found out that the aeration method was more effective, with over 33% of NH3 removal capacity, than the anerobic and this 5 bed filter showed double removal capacity of NH3 by comparing with conventional sand bed (2 stage bed). According to the examination of two kind of head water, pre-treated with coagulant agent and activated carben, the filtration capacity was affected by the polluted condition of head water, resulting that lower value of pollution and slower velocity of filtration showed more efficiency of NH3 removal. In this experiment NH3 content tested in treated water had a fairly good correlation with others.
