Objective To study the effect of leech powder on mortality and disability of acute intracerebral hemorrhage at 30 days and 1 year. Methods In a Case-control study,we analyzed the 30-day and 1-year mortality and disability with respect to leech powder treatment status in 59 patients consecutively admitted within one week of intracerebral hemorrhage onset. Confounding factors were compared between treated and nontreated patients. Results About two thirds of the patients received oral leech powder as part of their routine treatment, mean dosage was (2.22?0.42)g/d and mean duration was (10.12?3.39)d. The mortality was 2.4% versus 16.7% (P =0.08) at 30 days and 17.1% versus 44.4% (P=0.03) at 1 year in the leech powder treated and nontreated groups, respectively. Modified Rankin score 5-6 was 43.9% (61.1% in nontreated groups,P =0.45) at 30 days and 17.1% (50% in nontreated groups,P =0.03) at 1 year in treated groups, respectively. Leech powder treatment effect was adjusted for Glasgow Coma Scale, hyperglycemia, creatinine and smoker in logistic regression models. Depending on the factors entered into the model, either no effect or harm could be attributed to leech powder. Conclusions Based on the results of this study,no recommendations can be made on the use of leech powder in acute intracerebral hemorrhage. And properly randomized, controlled trials should be performed to come to a final conclusion.

Objective To examine the segmental bone defects healing by ? TCP/rhBMP 2 composites with different degradation rate and discuss the relationship between osteogenesis and degradation of ? TCP in vivo. Methods Three kinds of ? tricalcium phosphate(? TCP) with different degradation rate (? TCP1-3) were prepared by means of different techniques. ? TCP/rhBMP 2 composites with different degradation rate(? TCP1/rhBMP 2 and ? TCP2/rhBMP 2)were obtained by combining ? TCP1, ? TCP2 with recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein 2(rhBMP 2), respectively. ? TCP1/rhBMP 2, ? TCP2/rhBMP 2, ? TCP1, ? TCP2 and ? TCP3 were used to repair 15 mm radial segmental defects in 81 Chinese rabbits. When the samples were harvested in 4, 8, 16 and 24 weeks after surgery, a series of examination were carried out, including the roentgenographical, histomorphological, biomechanical and computerized graphical analysis, energy dispersion analysis X ray (EDAX), and measurements of inorganic contents. Results Roentgenographically and histologically, all of the defects that had been treated with implants exhibited new bone formation, increasing with time. The quantity and rate of new bone formation in ? TCP1/rhBMP 2 group and ? TCP2/rhBMP 2 group were higher than those in group of ? TCP alone. The ability of new bone formation in ? TCP1/rhBMP 2 group was strongest. At 24 weeks the defects in ? TCP1/rhBMP 2 group were bridged with the appearance of marrow cavities, the inorganic contents and ratio of calcium to phosphate and biomechanical property in implants approached to those of normal bone. Although degradation occurred to some extent in ? TCP alone the degradation were faster in ? TCP/rhBMP 2 composites. At 24 weeks the degradation rate in ? TCP1/rhBMP 2 group and ? TCP2/rhBMP 2 group were 97.4%and 73.4%, respectively. The defects in blank controls were repaired only by fibrous tissue at 24 weeks. Conclusion ? TCP/rhBMP 2 composites with different degradation rate could repair segmental bone defects, and osteogenesis could accelerate the degradation of ? TCP in vivo.

Objective To define the role of melatonin in the pathogenesis of chickens scoliosis following pinealectomy and constant light irradiation. Methods Ten white leghorn chickens in the control group were kept in light-dark (12h:12h) cycle, 500 lx in daytime and 0-5 lx in nighttime after birth. Pinealectomy was performed in 20 white leghorn chickens when 3-day-old and then kept in light-dark cycle as the control group. Constant light (500 lx) irradiation was used to reduce the secretion of melatonin in 20 chickens after their births. Radiologic examinations were performed on all chicken spines for scoliosis monthly. When the chickens were 3-month-old, their mid-day and mid-night serum samples were collected and analyzed with ELISA kit for melatonin. Results There was no scoliosis in the control group and constant light group when the chickens were 3-month-old. In the pinealectomy group, 4 chickens had obvious scoliosis in the first month when X-ray examination was taken. The curved deformity progressed and became serious when the chickens grew up. There were 7 chickens with severe curved deformity in the second month. When the chickens were 3-month-old, there were totally 11 chickens with scoliosis, Cobb' angle 11?-85?, average 30.63?. The level of melatonin in control group was low in daytime (10.6 pg/ml) and high in nighttime (110.4 pg/ml) alternately. The melatonin level was much lower, daytime 8.4 pg/ml and nighttime 6.9 pg/ml in pinealectomy group and 10.8 pg/ml in constant light group. There was no statistical significance in the serum melatonin between the pinealectomy group and constant light group. Both groups remained low level of serum melatonin. Conclusion Pinealectomy can reduce the secretion of melatonin and induce scoliosis in chickens. Although constant light could suppress the secretion of melatonin in chicken serum, it did not induce scoliosis. The pathogenesis of chickens scoliosis might not be mediated by low-level melatonin.

ObjectiveTo evaluate the value of transcranial Doppler (TCD) in pecutaneous transtuminl angioplasty and stenting (PTAS).MethodsThe index of hemodynamics, include mean peak flow velocity (Vm), systolic peak flow velocity (Vs), enddiastolic peak flow velocity (Vd), pulsatility index (Pi), resistance index (Ri) in 47 cases with the stenosis of the middle cerebral artery were investigated, while compared with that of intra arterial digital subtraction angiography (DSA). ResultsVs and Vm of 41 cases increased while the Pi reduced after operation, Ri had no change; Vs, Vm, Vd increased and Pi reduced with no reflow signal in 5 cases. Vs and Vm increased with Vd reduced in only 1 case. The accuracy rate with DSA in moderate or severe stenosis was 75% or 83% respectively. ConclusionTCD, as it's reliable, no-invasive, convenience and cheap, can play an important role in assessing the effect of PTAS in middle cerebral artery stenosis.
