Objective:To investigate whether enamel matrix proteins (EMPs) has osteoinductive property. Methods: EMPs and propylene glycol alginate (PGA) in the size of 2 mm3 were placed into calf muscle of 8 SD rats on experiment side. PGA was placed on control side. The rats were sacrificed four weeks after operation. The calf samples were examined by histological observation.Result:Bone-like and/or cartilage-like tissues was not observed in all the operated calf muscles. Conclusion:EMPs are not osteoinductive.

Objective: To investigate the effects of mouse recombinant Periostin on the attachment and proliferation of PDL cells on root surfaces. Methods: Normal (N) and periodontitis (P) root slices were treated with Periostin (Pe) and fibronectin (FN), respectively. Untreated root slices (Co) served as negative controls. Objective: To observe the effects of human insuline like growth factor 1 (rhIGF 1) and/or basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) on the proliferation of periodontal ligament (PDL) cells. Methods: PDL cells were exposed to rhIGF 1 and/or bFGF at various concentrations for 1,3,5 and 7 d respectively. Objective:To prepare a rabbit anti-mouse Periostin IgG antibody and to study the expression of Periostin in mice.Methods:Complete Freund adjuvant with recombinant Periostin was used to immunize rabbits.Whole blood was collected from the animals after immunization for 5 times. Serum was obtained by centrifugation. The specific IgG antibody was purified from the serum by ammonium sulfate. Total protein isolated from mouse liver, brain, kidney and calvaria and periodontal tissue was used to study the expression of Periostin in mice by Western blot, immunohistochemical staining was applied to examine Periostin expression in jaw bone and dental tissues.Results:Anti-Periostin antibody with the titer of 128 was obtained.Western blot showed that there was a specific band near Mr 90 000 in calvaria and periodontal tissues, but not in liver, brain and kidney.By immunohistochemical examination Periostin was detected in both mandibular periosteum and periodontal ligament,but not in cementum, dentin, alveolar bone and dental pulp.Conclusion:Periostin may play a role in bone and periodontal tissue formation.

Objective To observe the effect of bacillus bifidus preparation on the prevention of gastrointestinal side effects in children with acute lymphocyte leukemia (ALL) during high-dose methotrexate (HD-MTX) chemotherapy.Methods One hundred and fifty-two ALL children were randomly assigned into 2 groups according to the suggestion of diagnosis and treatment of ALL in childhood.There were 76 patients in each group.In the treatment group,there were 46 male and 30 female,aged 2 to 13 years old (the median age was 8 years).While in the control group,there were 41 male and 35 female (the median age was 8.2 years).They were treated with the same chemotherapy schedule (HD-MTX),supportive therapies and infection preventive measures.ALL children in the treatment group were additionally given the bacillus bifidus preparation (one tablet for 2 to 6 years old,and two tablets for 7 to 15 years old,3 times daily),if their WBC was more than 2.0?109 L-1.Those in the control group were given vitamin B complex tablets (one tablet for 2 to 6 years old and two tablets for 7 to 15 years old,3 times daily).Results ALL children in treatment group had less diarrhea,abdominal pain,nausea and vomiting,or liver function impairment induced by chemotherapy than those in control group.However,the bacillus bifidus preparation had no significant effects on the symptoms of fever and oral mucosal erosions in the period of chemotherapy.Conclusion The bacillus bifidus preparation is clinically useful for the prevention of gastrointestinal side effects associated with HD-MTX chemotherapy.

AIM: To observe the anti-inflammatory effect of CQMUH-011 and to explore its mechanism.METHODS: Three kinds of animal models, mouse ear swelling induced by xylene, rat granuloma induced by cotton ball and rat rheumatoid arthritis induced by Freund's complete adjuvant, were established to study the anti-inflammatory effect of CQMUH-011.The ear swelling degree, dry weight of cotton ball granuloma, arthritis index, paw swelling and ankle joint pathological changes were measured to reflect the severity of inflammation.The anti-inflammatory mechanisms of CQMUH-011 were investigated by detecting the serum levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6) by ELISA.Malondialdehyde (MDA), myeloperoxidase (MPO) and nitric oxide (NO) were determined by corresponding kits.RESULTS: Treatment with CQMUH-011 significantly decreased TNF-α, IL-6 and NO concentrations, MDA contents and MPO activity in the serum.Meanwhile, Ear swelling degree, dry weight of cotton ball granuloma, arthritis index, paw swelling and ankle joint pathological damage were attenuated.CONCLUSION: CQMUH-011 has an anti-inflammatory effect, which may be related to inhibiting the production of inflammatory factors and attenuating lipid peroxidation.

Objective To explore the effect of community comprehensive intervention on stroke-prevention-related knowledge, belief and behavior of hypertensive patients. Methods The community-based comprehensive interventions were done to 77 hypertensive patients, with the measures including archives establishment, hypertension-phased management, regular follow-up and multi-mode health education. The stroke-prevention-related knowledge, belief and behavior of them were assessed by the stroke-preventing knowledge questionnaire (SPKQ), champion′s health belief model scale (CHBMS) and (stroke-prevention behavior questionnaire,SPBQ) before and after the intervention. Results Their knowledge on daily-life and pre-stroke symptoms and part of their behaviors (health duty, physical exercises and stress management after the intervention were superior, as compared to the pre-intervention (P<0.05). There were no significant differences in other stroke-related knowledge and behaviors and health belief in comparison of the pre-and post-intervention (P>0.05). Conclusion The community-based intervention can improve parts of stroke prevention knowledge and health behavior among hypertensive patients. The intervention needs to be modified based on ecological models of health promotion and health belief model.
