Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Theory and Practice 2007;13(4):377-379
Objective To observe the clinical effect of emergency operative treatment on thoracolumbar compression or burst fractures using pedicle screw instrument through posterior approach and indirect reduction.Methods53 acute thoracolumbar compression or burst fractures cases injured within 4 days were accepted the emergency operation of indirect reduction, decompression and fixation using pedicle screw instrument through posterior approach. The mean percentage of traumatic vertebral body height, sagittal diameter of spinal canal, degrees of kyphosis and Frankel scoring of nerve function were evaluated before and after operation.ResultsAll cases received two weeks following-up, 47 cases had more than one-year following-up. The mean percentage of traumatic vertebral height restored from 42.28% (pre-operation) to 93.46% (post-operation); the mean degrees of kyphosis recovered from 26.44° (pre-operation) to 17.73° (post-operation); the mean percentage of sagittal diameter of spinal canal changed from 63.14% (pre-operation) to 78.55% (post-operation). All but cases with completely spinal cord injury got more than one grade nerve functional restoration. Neither later spinal cord injury nor back pain existed among the patients. Three cases emerged partial internal fixation device failure, but neither symptoms nor abnormality correction missed.ConclusionEmergency operation using pedicle screw instrument through posterior approach is a feasible and confirmatory choice in treatment of the acute thoracolumbar compression or burst fractures if the cases are selected properly.

Malaysian Journal of Medical Sciences 2012;19(1):4-14
The purpose of this review is to provide a summary of studies on the effectiveness nutrition education interventions used by college students. Electronic databases such as Medline, Science Direct, CINAHL (EBSCOhost), and Google Scholar were explored for articles that involved nutrition education interventions for college students and that were published between 1990 and 2011. Fourteen studies, which involved a total of 1668 college students as respondents, were identified and met the inclusion criteria. The results showed that there were 3 major forms of nutrition education interventions: web-based education, lectures, and supplement provisions. Dietary intake measures were used in almost all studies and were primarily collected with food records, recall, food frequency questionnaires, and dietary habit questionnaires. The outcome measures varied among the studies, with indicators such as consumption of food, nutrition knowledge, dietary habits, physical activity, and quality of life. Methodological issues were also identified. In general, college students experienced significant changes in their dietary habits after the interventions were employed. The highlighted methodological issues should be considered to improve the quality of similar research in future.

10.Post-operative deformity after posterior approach vertebral pedicle fixation in treatment of thorac-lumbar fracture
Orthopedic Journal of China 2006;0(14):-
[Objective]To analyze the factors of post-operative deformity after posterior approach vertebral pedicle fixation in treatment of dorso-lumbar spinal fractures.[Method]Between 2000.10~2005.11,32 patients of single dorso-lumbar spinal fracture were hospitalized.compressive type 5 cases, explosive type 27 cases.T11 12 cases,T12 11 cases,L1 5 cases,L2 3 cases,L3 1 case. The patients were devided into 3 groups according to the severity of related chondral plates injuly, group 1: without chondral fracture 11cases,group 2: with upper chondral plate fracture 15 cases, group 3: with both upper and lower chondral plate fractures 6 cases.By the formula to measure the average height of fractured vertebral body and its kyphotic Cobb's angle before operation, after operation and at time of follow-up,and calculate the result stastically.[Result]All 32 patients were followed-up for 10~56 months(average 23 months). The results indicated that the patient's preoperative condition was negatively correlated with the average vertebral height which is followed-up.The worse condition was,and the greater loss of postoperative vertebral height was.Furthermore, the patient's situation before operation had a positive correlation with the Cobb's angle of vertebral followed-up.When the patient's condition was worse, the postoperative angle of deformity was larger.[Conclusion]Posterior approach vertebral pedicle fixation in treatment of dorso-lumbar spinal fractures may result in reccurence of vertebral deformity, which is related to the severity of injury of vertebra and its chondral plates,so that to those patients related with chondral plates injuries, the vertebral pedicle fixation should be combined with anterior bone grafting,or with bone grafting into vertebral body after reduction.
