2.Investigation of the anxiety and depression status of patients with paralysis after spinal cord injury and the coping measures

Objective To investigate the status of the anxiety and depression in the patients with paralysis after spinal cord injury, and the measures to cope with it. Methods Sixty cases of patients with paralysis after spinal cord injury were evaluated with Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) and SelfRating Depression Scale (SDS), the results were compared with those of the domestic norm of healthy individuals. Results The scores of patients with paralysis after spinal cord injury were higher than that of domestic norm of healthy individuals. 54 cases had anxious symptom (90.00%), and 37 had depression.The causes led to anxiety and depression mainly came from the suffering of the disease, the influence of the work as well as the study and the cost of the treatment. Conclusions The patients with paralysis after spinal cord injury had mental problems, they need to be interfered with by healthy education and mental nursing in order to promote rehabilitation.
3.EFFECTS OF UROTENSIN II ON ELECTRICAL ACTIVITY OF PARAVENTRICULAR NEURONS IN RAT HYPOTHALAMIC SLICES

Effects of urotensin II (UII) on paraventricular nucleus (PVN) neurons of hypothalamus from brain slices of rats were examined by using extracellular recording technique. The results are as follows: (1) In response to application of UII (0.3, 3.0, 30.0, 300.0 nmol/L, n=39) into the perfusate for 2 min, the spontaneous discharge rates (SDR) of 32/39 (82.05% ) neurons were significantly decreased in a dose-dependent manner; (2) Pretreatment with bicuculline (BIC, 100 μmol/L), a specific GABAA receptor antagonist, led to a marked increase in SDR of 5/7 ( 71.43% ) neurons in an epileptiform pattern. The increased discharges were not significantly changed after UII ( 30.0 nmol/L ) was applied into the perfusate for 2 min; (3) Pretreatment with picrotoxin ( PIC, 50 μmol/L ), a selective blocker of Cl- channel, led to an increase in the SDR of all 12/12 (100%) neurons. The increased discharges were not influenced by the applied UII (30.0 nmol/L) for 2 min in 11/12 (91.67%) neurons; (4) Application of nitric oxide synthase (NOS) inhibitor NG-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME, 50 μmol/L ) into the perfusate could significantly augment the SDR of 11/12 ( 91.67% ) neurons , while UII ( 30.0 nmol/L ) applied into the perfusate for 2 min led the augmented SDR of all (12/12, 100%) neurons decrease. The results suggest that UII decreases the excitability of PVN neurons of hypothalamus by potentiating GABAA receptor-mediated Cl- current.
4.Repairing articular cartilage defects in rabbits using bone marrow stromal cell-derived chondrocytes compounded with poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid)

BACKGROUND: Matrix material for cartilage tissue engineering exhibits too fast or too slow chondrocytes degradation in vivo, affecting tissue regeneration and shaping reconstruction, which has troubled scholars.OBJECTIVE: To amply bone marrow stromal cells (BMSCs) and induce them to chondrocytes in vitro, so as to study the feasibility of repairing articular cartilage defects in rabbits using poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) loaded with BMSC-derived chondrocytes.DESIGN, TIME AND SETTING: Comparative experiment was performed at the Institute of Orthopaedics in the Fourth Military Medical University of Chinese PLA and the Center Laboratory of the Airforce General Hospital of Chinese PLA between June 2002 and June 2008.MATERIALS: A total of 36 two-month-old New Zealand white rabbits were used, and 4-6 mL bone marrow was aspirated from bilateral femoral trochanters in each animal. Primary culture and subcultures were done. In subcultures, the medium contained bone morphogenetic protein-2 (100 μg/L.), and high polymer hyaluronic acid was spread on bottom of the culture flasks in advance.In this way, the BMSCs were induced into chondrocytes and the third passage of cells at the adjusted density of 2.0×10~(10)/L wereco-cultured with PLGA for 24 hours, then PLGA-cell composites were prepared.METHODS: A defect of 4-mm in diameter and reaching medullary cavity were created in femoral condyles of 36 rabbits, and 36 right knees were treated with PLGA-cell composites, serving as experimental group, while 18 left knees with PLGA only as material group, and the other 18 knees remained untreated, as blank control group.MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: At 4,8,12, 24 weeks after operation, the animals were euthanized and the newly formed tissues were observed macroscopically and microscopically, graded histologically, and analyzed statistically.RESULTS: Material group and blank control group shared identical outcomes of gross and histological observation, thus assigning into a control group. In the experimental group at 24 weeks, the defects were filled with white translucent cartilage tissue which appeared smooth and tenacious. The color and the luster were similar to that of normal cartilage, and was ill-demarcated from the surrounding normal cartilage. The cells on the surface paralleled to joint surface. Though the cells in the deep layer arranged disorderly, they tended to align vertically. The matrix was extensively stained. The subchondral bone formed.The tide mark basically recovered, and the new cartilage integrated with normal cartilage finely. In the control group, chondrocytes proliferated in the border, but in the bottom, there were mainly fibrous tissues. The histological grade of 12 and 24 weeks was different significantly from that of 4 and 8 weeks (P < 0.01). There were also significant differences between experimental group and control group at each time intervals after operation (P < 0.01).CONCLUSION: BMSCs were successfully induced into chondroncytes by use of bone morphogenetic protein-2 and high polymer hyaluronic acid. PLGA can be degraded and absorbed gradually while new cartilage tissues form. It can be used as a suitable scaffold material for repairing articular cartilage defects in tissue engineering.
5.Rehabilitation practice and outcomes after spinal cord injury

BACKGROUND:Rehabilitation outcomes of patients with spinal cord injury are associated with degree of injury, therapeutic method, recovery time and subsequent treatment. Multidisciplinary, comprehensive, specialized rehabilitation unit can provide a better recovery after spinal cord injury. OBJECTIVE:To review the effect or combined effect of rehabilitation units after spinal cord injury. METHODS:A computer-based search of Springer and PubMed databases was done using the keywords of“spinal cord injury, rehabilitation practice, outcomes”, which appeared in the title and abstract. Final y, 44 English papers were included in result analysis. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Based on practical evidence, various rehabilitation practices are recognized, and then, the relevant information is connected with the outcomes to evaluate the efficacy of rehabilitation interventions. Studies have shown that age had no influence on rehabilitation outcomes in traumatic and non-traumatic mixed samples, and there is also little difference in the rehabilitation outcomes between male and female. Incidence of complications is lowest in the vast majority of patients with spinal cord injury who are initial y admitted to a specialist center of spinal cord injury. The hospital stay can be shorten in patients who can be admitted to a multidisciplinary, comprehensive, specialized division of spinal cord injury as early as possible. Patients who can receive regular, comprehensive outpatient fol ow-up show no significant differences in health perception, independence and depression, but the frequency and degree of certain secondary situations can be significantly reduced.
6.Observation on Therapeutic Effect of Acupuncture plus Moxibustion for Insomnia

Objective: In order to observe the clinical effect of acupuncture plus moxibustion for insomnia. Methods: Seventy-six patients with insomnia were randomly divided into 38 cases in the treatment group and 38 cases into the control group. The main acupoints for the treatment group were Baihui (GV 20), Shenmen (HT 7), and Sanyinjiao (SP 6). The additional acupoints were Yintang (Ex-HN 3), Anmian (Ex-HN 22), Shenmai (BL 62), Zhaohai (KI 6), Neiguan (PC 6), Jueyinshu (BL 14), Xinshu (BL 15), Pishu (BL 20), Weishu (BL 21), Danshu (BL 19). The treatment was given by acupuncture plus moxibustion. Suspending moxibustion by moxa stick was used over the main acupoints. And the additional acupoints were punctured routinely. The main acupoints for the control group were Baihui (GV 20), Shenmen (HT 7), and Sanyinjiao (SP 6), Yintang (Ex-HN 3), Anmian (Ex-HN 22), Shenmai (BL 62), and Zhaohai (KI 6). The additional acupoints were Jueyinshu (BL 14), Xinshu (BL 15), Pishu (BL 20), Weishu (BL 21),Danshu (BL 19). The treatment was given by acupuncture routinely. The therapeutic effects were compared in the change of Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), therapeutic effect and therapeutic courses. Results: The treatment group was better than the control group in PSQI change, therapeutic effect and therapeutic course (P<0.05). There was no adverse reaction.Conclusion: Acupuncture plus moxibustion has a better therapeutic effect for insomnia.
7.Indoor Air Microbial Pollution in Classrooms and Dormitories in a University in China

Objective To know the microbial pollution in the indoor air of classrooms and dormitories in a university and analyze the possible impact factors.Methods In April and May,2007,the indoor air sampling was conducted and the total count of air microbe in indoors was determined in eight classrooms and twenty dormitories by the impacting method.Results According to the related national hygienic standard of China, the total count of air microbe in all classrooms was qualified, the total count of air microbe in the dormitories was all qualified, but it was higher in male's dormitories compared with female's.Conclusion In general, there was not obviously indoor microbial pollution in the investigated university.

Objective To know the prevalence rates of diabetes and its risk factors among residents in Haizhu district,Guangzhou.Methods With multiple stages stratified and systematic-random sampling,8 403 residents(aged 18 yrs old and over)were selected and investigated by cross-sectional study,items including:general conditions,risk factors of diabetes,physical examination and knowledge about diabetes,and 2 017 cases were assayed on their blood glucose and lipids.Data were analyzed with SPSS software.Results The general prevalence rate of diabetes was 9.0%(182/2017),the standardized prevalence rate of diabetes was5.5%;the rate of impaired fasting blood glucose(IFG)was 5.1%(103/2017),the standardized rate of IFG was 3.8%.The prevalence rate of diabetes was positively correlated with age(r=0.98,P
10.Economic benefit of military medical measurement in Nanjing Military Region

Objective: To evaluate economic benefits of military medical measurement. Methods: According to the record of the metrological verification from the measurement station in Nanjing military region from 2000 to 2004, database is set up by Excel 2003 and the economic benefits from 14 kinds of measuring standard are analyzed. Results In a 5-year-lifetime cycle, the NPV of 10 kinds of measuring standards were over 0, 4 kinds less than 0, the average pay back period was 4.43year, and total benefit cost ratio was 2.73. Conclusion Economic benefits have been gained obviously in the investment of military medical measurement.
