1.Gastrointestinal malignancies and cardiovascular diseases
Journal of International Oncology 2013;40(9):692-695
Nowadays, antiplatelet and anticoagulant drugs have been applied to a variety of cardiovascular diseases, such as atrial fibrillation and coronary artery disease.Several clinical studies show that there is a higher prevalence of gastrointestinal cancers in patients with cardiovascular disease. In addition,in patients taking antithrombotic drugs, positive fecal occult blood test (FOBT) improves the sensitivity for early detection of colorectal malignancies. This suggests that antithrombotic drugs may facilitate the detection of unrecognized cancers in patients with cardiovascular disease. However, there is no established evidence concerning whether more aggressive gastrointestinal tract screening will reduce the mortality of cancer in cardiology patients. But in an era of multiple antithrombotic drug usage, when patients appear unexplained anemia, gastrointestinal symptoms or positive FOBT,timely gastrointestinal tract screening is helpful to find concomitanted malignancies in these patients.
2.Progress in relationship between Stat3 and invasion and metastasis in cancer
Journal of International Oncology 2009;36(7):486-488
Signal transdcuers and activators of transcription3 (Stat3) is activated by a wide range of cytokines and growth factors following binding to special DNA domain and affects the expression of a variety of genes in modulating the process of cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. As a point of convergence for many oncogenic tyrosine kinase signaling pathways,it can be activited by sevral accesses. Stat3 is not only in-volved in the function of both apoptosis suppression, proliferation promotion, but also participates the process of angiogenesis, invasion and immune evasion. For repression of this way maybe a new target for break of cancer in-vasion and metastasis, blockers of Stat3 has become the focus of many researches.

Journal of Preventive Medicine 2022;34(7):732-737
Objective:
To investigate the trends in cancer mortality among residents in Wuyi County, so as to provide insights into the development of the cancer control strategy.
Methods:
The deaths due to cancer among residents in Wuyi County from 2015 to 2019 were collected from Zhejiang Provincial Information Management System for Surveillance of Chronic Diseases. The crude mortality and standardized mortality of cancer and annual percent change (APC) of were calculated to analyze the trends in cancer mortality and causes of death.
Results:
A total of 3 424 deaths occurred due to cancer in Wuyi County from 2015 to 2019, and the crude and standardized mortality rates of cancer were 199.65/105 and 185.87/105, respectively. The crude mortality of cancer was significantly higher in men than in women (271.53/105 vs. 125.40/105;χ2=459.374, P<0.001). The standardized mortality of cancer showed a tendency towards a reduction among all study subjects, men and residents at ages of 45 to 59 years (APC=-3.87%, -4.44%,-11.46%, all P<0.05), and the crude mortality of cancer appeared a tendency towards a rise with age in all study subjects, men and women (χ2=7 063.842, 2 155.609, 5 492.128, all P<0.001). Lung cancer, liver cancer, gastric cancer, bowel cancer and esophageal cancer were the five leading causes of cancer-related mortality, which accounted for 71.41% of all cancer mortality. The crude mortality of central nervous system cancer (2.07/105) and leukemia (1.66/105) was high among residents at ages of 0 to 14 years, and the crude mortality of liver cancer (3.02/105) and lung cancer (2.01/105) was high among residents at ages of 15 to 44 years, while the crude mortality of lung cancer (51.57/105) and liver cancer (36.22/105)was high among residents at ages of 45 to 59 years, and the crude mortality of lung cancer (305.48/105) and gastric cancer (114.65/105) was high among residents at ages of 60 years and older.
Conclusions
The standardized mortality of cancer appeared a tendency towards a reduction in Wuyi County from 2015 to 2019, and men and the elderly were high-risk populations for cancer. Screening, early diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer, gastrointestinal cancer and cervical cancer should be given a high priority.

Objective To investigate the electromyographic changes in the anterior temporal and masseter muscles of patients with long-term unilateral mandibular first molar loss. Methods Eighteen patients with one-year or more than one-year loss of unilateral mandibular first molar were selected as experimental group, and eighteen volunteers from similar places, had similar dietary habits in the same age and gender with normal occlusion were recruited as control group. Surface electromyography was used for the evaluation of the electrical activities of bilateral anterior temporal and masseter muscles in mandibular postural position ( MPP ) , maximal clenching in intercuspal position ( ICP) and masticating situations. The data were analyzed using SPSS 17. 0 software package to compare the differ-ences among groups. Results The average electrical activities of anterior temporal and masseter muscles in MPP of experimental group were significantly higher than the contral group, and the missing side was higher than the non-missing side ( P <0. 05 ) . The average electrical activities of anterior temporal and masseter muscles in maximal clenching and masticating were significantly lower than the control group, especially in the masticating situation( P<0. 05 ) . The asymmetry index of anterior temporal muscles and masseter muscles in MPP and maximal clenching were significantly different(P<0. 05). Conclusion Long-term loss of unilateral mandibular first molar can affect the electrical activities of the anterior temporal muscles and masseter muscles in the experimental group, especially for the missing side and in the masticating situation. These results also suggest that it might be one of the potential factors on mastication system disorders.

Objective To analyze the correlation between the bleeding control time, treatment and prognosis in acute gastroesophageal variceal hemorrhage and to explore the predictive factors in treatment failure. Methods The clinical data of 309 patients with acute gsstroesophageal variceal hemorrhage was collected. The bleeding control was retrospectively analyzed within and at two hours after treatment, over two hours but less than six hours, over six hours but less than five days,at and after five days. The correlation between bleeding control time and mortality rate was analyzed. The differences in success rate of bleeding control and mortality rate between medication treatment alone and medication combined with endoscopic treatment were compared.Logistic regression mode was used to analyze the predictive factors of treatment failure. Results Of the 309 acute gastroesophageal variceal hemorrhage hospitalized patients, the failure of bleeding control within and at two hours, over two hours but less than six hours and over six hours but less than five days were 79 cases,25 cases and 26 cases respectively and there were one, four and 16 cases who died respectively. The success rate of bleeding control by medication treatment alone was 57.93% (179/309) and the mortality was 10.36% (32/309). The success rate of bleeding control by medication combined with treatment under endoscope was 82.35% (28/34) and the mortality rate was 0.The results of Logistic regression mode analysis indicated that the admission systolic blood pressure (≤90 mm Hg,1 mm Hg=0.133 kPa),increase of total bilirubin, increase of Child-Pugh grade and ascites were the predictive factors of treatment failure. Conclusions The time of bleeding control failure mostly was within two hours. With time extended, the mortality increased. The success rate of bleeding control by medication combined with endoscopic treatment was higher and the mortality was lower. The admission systolic blood pressure lower than 90 mm Hg,increase of total bilirubin, increase of Child-Pugh grade and ascites may be the predictive factors of treatment failure.
