Korean Journal of Community Nutrition 2006;11(1):133-142
Antioxidant vitamin supplementation focuses one's attention on the prevention of age-related diseases. This study was conducted to investigate the antioxidant status and lipid profiles and to look into the antioxidant vitamin supplementation that affects lipid metabolism in 20 elderly non-smoking Korean women (placebo group: n = 6, vitC suppl: n = 7, vitE suppl: n = 7). Age, height, weight, muscle, percent of fat and WHR were not significantly different among the groups, however % of fat was above 33% and WHR was above 0.9. And blood pressure of the placebo group was 131.7/81.7 (border line hypertension), that of vitamin C supplement was 141.4/87.1 (hypertension) and that of vitamin E supplement was 151.4/92.9 (hypertension). Although nutrient intakes of all groups were poor, antioxidant status (blood vitamins C, E, A, and beta-carotene) and lipid profile (TG, total-cholesterol, VLDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol) were normal. For nutritional intervention, the vitamin C supplement group received L-ascorbic acid 1,000 mg, and vitamin E supplement group received d-alpha-tocopherol 400IU for 4 weeks, showing the effects of vitamin E supplementation. Response total cholesterol of HDL-cholesterol (T-Chol/HDL) in vitamin E supplement group was significantly decreased from 4.3 to 3.2. And response LDL-cholesterol of HDL-cholesterol (LDL/HDL) in the vitamin E supplement group was also significantly decreased from 2.6 to 1.7. In addition, after the adjustment for plasma lipids (TG, total cholesterol), plasma vitamin A levels in vitamin E supplement group were significantly increased from 7.89 mg/g to 14.91 mg/g. And systolic blood pressure in vitamin E supplement group was significantly reduced. These results suggested that vitamin E supplementation affects the lipid profiles and blood pressure in elderly non-smoking women. So various nutrition programs must be implemented against age-related diseases and further studies are needed regarding sorts and amounts of antioxidant nutrients and supplementation periods.

Korean Journal of Ophthalmology 2013;27(3):158-161
PURPOSE: To evaluate whether alterations in plasma vitamin A and E levels in patients with psoriasis have an effect on tear film changes. METHODS: Sixty-two eyes of 31 patients with psoriasis vulgaris (Group A) and 74 eyes of 37 age- and gender-matched control subjects (Group B) were included in the study. Ocular and medical histories and dietary habits were obtained from each patient. The tear film break-up time (TBUT), the Schirmer 1 test results and plasma vitamin A and E levels were evaluated. RESULTS: The mean Schirmer 1 test score was 14.76 +/- 6.12 mm/5 min in Group A and 15.69 +/- 3.10 mm/5 min in Group B. The mean plasma levels of vitamins A and E in Groups A and B were 1.86 +/- 0.62 micromol/L and 1.88 +/- 0.65 micromol/L vs. 26.21 +/- 5.13 micromol/L and 27.19 +/- 8.89 micromol/L, respectively. The Schirmer 1 test results and plasma vitamin A and E levels were not found to be significantly different between the groups (p > 0.05). The mean TBUT was 9.94 +/- 6.18 seconds in Group A and 14.47 +/- 5.65 seconds in Group B, a significant difference (p < 0.05). No correlation existed between plasma vitamin A and E levels, TBUT or the severity and duration of the disease (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Plasma vitamin A and E levels do not seem to be related to tear film changes in patients with psoriasis vulgaris.

Journal of Nutrition and Health 2017;50(4):313-324
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to examine the association between intake of antioxidant vitamins and prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) among Korean adults. METHODS: A total of 614 subjects aged 30~60 years were recruited from those who received a medical checkup at a general hospital in South Korea between 2009 and 2012. Presence of MetS was determined based on criteria issued by the NCEP ATP III. Intakes of antioxidant vitamins (vitamin A, retinol, carotenoids, vitamin C, and vitamin E) were estimated by combining 3-day diet records with an antioxidant vitamin database for common Korean foods. We used multiple logistic regression analysis to assess the association between dietary intakes of antioxidant vitamins and MetS. RESULTS: Men in the highest tertile for retinol (OR = 0.40, 95% CI = 0.23~0.71, P for trend = 0.0009), carotenoids (OR = 0.57, 95% CI = 0.32~1.00, P for trend = 0.0470), and vitamin E (OR = 0.52, 95% CI = 0.30~0.92, P for trend = 0.0190) intakes had a lower likelihood of having Mets than those in the lowest tertile. The OR of high fasting blood glucose among men in the highest tertile for vitamin A (µg RE: OR = 0.55, 95% CI = 0.32~0.97, P for trend = 0.0417, µg RAE: OR = 0.52, 95% CI = 0.29~0.92, P for trend = 0.0211), carotenoids (OR = 0.41, 95% CI = 0.23~0.73, P for trend = 0.0036), and vitamin E (OR = 0.47, 95% CI = 0.26~0.82, P for trend = 0.0080) intakes was lower than those in the lowest tertile. In women, subjects in the highest tertile of retinol intakes had a lower prevalence of MetS than those in the lowest tertile group (OR = 0.55, 95% CI = 0.30~0.98). The OR for abdominal obesity was lower among women with the highest vitamin A (µg RE) intakes compared to those in the lowest tertile (OR = 0.51, 95% CI = 0.28~0.93, P for trend = 0.0293). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that dietary intakes of antioxidant vitamins might be associated with reduced risk of having MetS among Korean adults.

Journal of Zhejiang University. Medical sciences 2003;32(6):533-535
OBJECTIVETo investigate the plasma levels of ascorbic acid and vitamin E in patients with liver cirrhosis and to explore their significance.
METHODSThe plasma levels of ascorbic acid, vitamin E and lipoperoxides in patients with liver cirrhosis were measured, and the results were compared with those of sex-and age-matched healthy subjects.
RESULTThe plasma levels of ascorbic acid, vitamin E and lipoperoxides in the patients group were (42.94 +/-6.99)micromol/L, (17.99 +/-3.51)micromol/L and (14.09 +/-1.28)micromol/L, respectively, while those in the control group were (53.30 +/-9.45)micromol/L (t=9.50, P=0.000), (24.59 +/-7.22)micromol/L (t=7.94, P=0.000) and (12.11 +/-1.20)micromol/L (t=17.21, P=0.000), respectively.
CONCLUSIONThe levels of ascorbic acid and vitamin E in patients with liver cirrhosis decrease significantly, which may indicates the disturbance of balance between oxidation and antioxidation.

Chinese Journal of Pediatrics 2004;42(5):362-366
OBJECTIVETo explore the influence of vitamin E (VitE) concentration in serum on peripheral nerve conduction in patients with infantile hepatitis syndrome (IHS).
METHODSA retrospective study was carried out in 58 infants suffered from IHS without congenital biliary atresia and 31 of them were followed up. Thirty-two healthy infants were as control. The level of VitE in serum was detected with high performance liquid chromatography and nerve conduction was tested with surface electrodes along the nerves of limbs. The relationship between the level of VitE or total bilirubin (TB) or direct bilirubin (DB) and the nerve conduction velocity was analyzed comparatively.
RESULTS(1) The serum level of VitE was below the lower limit of 90% the normal value (13.78 micromol/L) in 71% (41/58) of patients, and was below the lower limit of 99% the normal level (9.17 micromol/L) in 48% (28/58) of patients. (2) The level of DB was more than 25.7 micromol/L in 86% (50/58) of the patients and was more than 102.6 micromol/L in 47% (27/58) of patients. Severe conjugated hyperbilirubinemia with cholestasis was demonstrated in most patients. (3) At least one abnormal parameter in nerve conduction test was found in 86% (50/58) patients. In 144 nerves tested, 60.4% (87/144) had at least one abnormal parameter. (4) Analysis for the association between bilirubin levels and VitE concentration in serum: in groups of DB > or = 25.7 micromol/L and DB < 25.7 micromol/L, the percentage of decreased VitE concentrations was 78% (39/50) and 25% (2/8), respectively, and the difference was significant (P < 0.01). Similar association between low VitE concentration and increased level of TB in serum could not be demonstrated. (5) Analysis for the association between abnormal nerve conduction and VitE concentration in serum: in the two groups with low and normal level of VitE, the percentage of abnormal nerve conduction was 93% (38/41) and 71% (12/17), respectively (chi(c)(2) = 4.93, P < 0.05). (6) Analysis for the association between abnormal nerve conduction and bilirubin in serum: There was no significant association between abnormal nerve conduction and serum level of either DB or TB. (7) Eight patients died and 9 patients had motor development delay in 31 patients during follow up. In these 17 patients with poor outcome, 88% (15/17) had very low VitE levels (< 9.17 micromol/L), which was markedly higher than the proportion of cases (43%, 6/14) with better prognosis (chi(c)(2) = 7.235, P < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONS(1) Low VitE serum levels were found in excess of the two thirds of patients with IHS and severely decreased levels in nearly a half of them. (2) A conjugated hyperbilirubinemia with cholestasis could be found in most patients (86%) suffered from IHS without congenital biliary atresia and about a half of them had serious cholestasis. (3) Conjugated hyperbilirubinemia with cholestasis could be the predominant cause of decreased serum VitE level in this study. (4) Abnormality of nerve conduction in patients with IHS might be related to VitE deficiency.

The Korean Journal of Nutrition 2005;38(10):827-835
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relation among mineral intakes, blood pressure, and blood lipids for health management of Korean adults over 20 years old. Subjects were recruited from the districts where they lived, which included rural (Yoju, n = 137), coastal (Taean, n = 100), and urban district (Suwon, n = 117). Anthropometrical measurement, blood pressure measurement, dietary intake assessment using 24-hour recall method, and blood collection and analysis of blood lipids were conducted. The average age, height, weight, and BMI were 54.7 years, 168.5 cm, 67.3 kg, and 24.5 kg/m2 for men and 53.9 years, 153.8 cm, 59.2 kg, and 25.0 kg/m2 for women, respectively. The mean daily intakes of total food and energy were 1219.1 g and 1740.9 kcal for men and 1071.3 g and 1432.6 kcal for women. The mineral intakes of men and women were 448.5 mg and 400.4 mg for calcium, 955.3 mg and 803.7 mg for phosphorus, 13.3 mg and 11.1 mg for iron, 4302.8 mg and 3393.3 mg for sodium, 2588.0 mg and 2264.9 mg for potassium, and 8.9 mg and 7.3 mg for zinc. The daily intakes of energy, calcium, zinc, vitamin B2, and vitamin E were 76.1%, 60.1%, 73.1%, 68.6%, and 80.4% of RDAs, respectively. The intakes of energy, calcium, zinc, vitamin B2 and E were not meet Korean RDAs. Especially, calcium, zinc, and vitamin B2 were less than 75% of RDAs. Blood pressure of the subjects was 128.3/75.5 mmHg for men and 124.1/73.7 mmHg for women. Serum lipids of men and women were 180.2 mg/dL and 184.9 mg/dL for total cholesterol, 160.8 mg/dL and 137.6 mg/dL for triglyceride, 41.5 mg/dL and 44.7 mg/dL for HDL-cholesterol, 106.6 mg/dL and 112.7 mg/dL for LDL-cholesterol, and 3.5 and 3.3 for atherogenic index. While serum triglyceride and AI of men was significantly higher, HDL-cholesterol was lower than those of women. In the relation among mineral intakes, blood pressure, and serum lipids, we found a significantly negative correlation of intakes of calcium, calcium/phosphorus, calcium density with systolic blood pressure. There were significantly negative correlation between intake of calcium/phosphorus and serum cholesterol, calcium density and serum cholesterol, sodium intake and serum HDL-cholesterol. Based on these results, we concluded that high intakes of calcium, calcium/phosphorus and low sodium intake were associated with favorable blood pressure and serum lipid profiles in adult men and women.

Chinese Journal of Contemporary Pediatrics 2015;17(12):1301-1305
OBJECTIVETo investigate the changes of the levels of galectin-3 (Gal-3) in serum and bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) of children with asthma whose have different serum levels of 25-hydroxyl-vitamin D₃[25(OH)D₃].
METHODSFifty children with asthma between January 2013 and December 2014 were enrolled as the asthma group, and they were classified into 25(OH)D₃sufficient (n=7), insufficient (n=12) and deficient subgroups (n=31) according to the serum levels of 25(OH)D₃. Twenty children with abnormal airway or tracheal foreign bodies served as the control group. The levels of 25(OH)D₃, Gal-3 and total IgE in serum and Gal-3 levels in BALF were measured using ELISA.
RESULTThe serum levels of 25(OH)D₃in the asthma group were lower than in the control group (P<0.05). The 25(OH)D₃deficient subgroup displayed the highest percentages of neutrophils, eosinophils and epithelial cells in BALF, followed by the 25(OH)D₃insufficient subgroup and the 25(OH)D₃sufficient subgroup (P<0.05). The percentages of neutrophils, eosinophils and epithelial cells in BALF in the three subgroups were all higher than in the control group (P<0.05). In children with asthma, serum levels of 25(OH)D₃were negatively correlated with the percentages of neutrophils, eosinophils and epithelial cells in BALF (r=-0.683, -0.795 and -0.670 respectively; P<0.05); and a negative correlation was also seen between serum 25(OH)D₃levels and serum Gal-3 and total IgE levels (r=-0.759 and -0.875 respectively; P<0.05).
CONCLUSIONSThe children with asthma have low serum levels of 25(OH)D₃. 25(OH)D₃and Gal-3 may be involved in the airway inflammation and the development of asthma.

This study was conducted to investigate the effects of residence types ( parent house, dormitory or boarding home, boarding home w/o food) on the dietary habits and health status of college women (20-23 y). Overall, 46.1% of college women reported that they were economically middle class and spent 200,000-390,000 won. Additionally, 17.4% of college women considered themselves healthy, while 33.8% reported that they were not healthy. Furthermore, 32.0% of college women had experience to control their weight and 39.8% reported that they exercised to control their weight. There were no significant differences in the height and weight of the subjects according to residential type, but the amount of skeletal muscles mass (21.0 +/- 2.6 kg) of the subjects that lived in dormitory or boarding home was significantly higher (p < 0.05) than that of women who lived at home. Additionally, 30.8% of students that lived in private residences, 25.0% of students that dwelled in dormitory or boarding homes and 27.7% of students that boarding home w/o food had three regular meals every day (p < 0.05). It has been reported that 18.3% of college students eat processed and instant foods due to their convenience. In the present study, intakes of energy, protein, fat, vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, vitamin B6, niacin, vitamin C, vitamin E and folic acid for the subjects who lived in dormitory or boarding homes was significantly higher than those of students who lived in private residences (p < 0.05). Additionally, intakes of iron, calcium, and zinc were lower in the subjects that boarding home w/o food (p < 0.05). Finally, the blood glucose level was 84.7 +/- 13.0 mg/dL, and differed significantly by residential types (p < 0.05); however, the average glucose levels of all subjects were within the normal range (90-110 mg/dL).
