OBJECTIVE: This controlled study was done to determine the protective effects of ischemic preconditioning (IP) on the liver of cats undergoing major liver resection.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of IP on alanine transaminase (ALT or SGPT) in cat*that will undergo major liver resection.
DESIGN: This study is a randomized controlled trial.
SETTING: LIST Health Sciences Research Laboratory.
PATIENTS/ PARTICIPANTS: This is an experimental study on the effects of ischemic preconditioning under hepatic inflow occlusion on the SGPT as a measure of morbidity in Felis catus (domestic cats) undergoing right hepatic lobectomy. Nine male cats, weighing 2.5-5kg, are equally allocated into any one of the following 3 study groups: Control group not subjected to ischemic preconditioning (C), Experimental group subjected to 1 1/2 minutes of ischemia followed by 1.5 minutes of reperfusion (El), Experimental group subjected to 5 minutes of ischemia followed by 5 minutes of reperfusion (E2).
RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the mean weight of cats in the 3 groups (p = 1.00). Comparing the pre and post result between using paired t-test, there was no significant difference in the baseline values (p = 0.14). However, there was a significant difference in the post result between the three groups (p < 0.001). The results showed that the mean post values significantly increased from baseline. The same result was noted in the El and E2 group where a significant increase was also noted with p values, 0.005 and 0.004, respectively. Comparing the mean difference in the pre and post values using ANOV A, there was a significant difference noted between the three groups as proven by all p values
CONCLUSION: In the past few years, interesting new data on the presence of ischemic preconditioning in various organs as an endogenous means to protect itself from ischemiahas been available. This study investigated and suggests that ischemic preconditioning may provide protection to the liver undergoing hepatic lobectomy.

Bipolar Disorder has been one of the leading psychiatric conditions here in the Philippines. . It is characterized by mood swings from profound depression to extreme euphoria (mania), with intervening period of normal mood (euthymia). The frequency, duration, and severity of manic and/or depressive episodes varies and is unique to each individual (Haber, 1997). In general, there are five in every 100 Filipinos who are suffering from some form of depression, and other may have a different reaction such as hyperactivity or swinging from depression to euphoria, unable to function normally, and in real danger of hurting themselves and others. Sadly, many of those with bipolar illness are left undiagnosed and, consequently, untreated. This case study presents how nurses play a role in helping patients overcome the challenges of having a psychiatric illness particularly those with Bipolar Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To develop a locally adapted patient decision aid (PtDA) on treatment intensification among Filipino patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and to test the feasibility of using PtDAs in a low middle-income country.
METHODOLOGY: A qualitative approach and an iterative process of development of a PtDA were employed for this study. We describe the process of developing a Filipino version of the Diabetes Medication Decision Aid. This PtDA was designed to help the patient choose the appropriate treatment intensification based on his own values and preferences, in consultation with his physician. The process involved decisional needs assessment through focus group discussions and key informant interviews, systematic literature review, iterative process of the development of a PtDA with clinical encounters (pilot testing), and preliminary field testing.
RESULTS: Decisional needs assessment revealed that Filipino patients are open to participate in shared decision-making if given the opportunity, including those with low socioeconomic status who likely have low health literacy. Physicians prefer to have visual aid tools to help them support their patient's decision-making. A PtDA prototype of a set of flash cards in Filipino was created and revised in an iterative method. We developed a more visually appealing tool after inputs from the expert panel and patient advisory group. Its use during clinical encounters provided additional insights from patients and clinicians on how to improve the PtDA. Preliminary field testing showed that its use is feasible in the target patient population.
CONCLUSION: Filipino patients, clinicians, and diabetes nurse educators have contributed to the creation of the first Filipino PtDA for diabetes treatment intensification.

Journal of the Philippine Medical Association 2024;102(2):14-40
Objective:
To compare theeffectiveness of the
use of electronic media and the use of printed
media in obtaining a higher general weighted
average (GWA) among 1st to 3rd year medical
students at Centro Escobar University (CEU), A.Y.
2021—2022
Research Design:
Cross sectional
Setting:
Centro Escolar University, San Miguel, Manila
Patient/Subject Selection:
The 140 subjects were selected by stratified random sampling design. Those currently enrolled full—time as regular CEU medical students and attending a complete number ofunits in the year level were
included in the selection.
Methods:
The GWA of the participants were
obtained from the Administrative Office of CEU—
School of Medicine, while data fortheindependent
variables were collected using questionnaires
patterned after the Academic Reading Format
International Study (ARFIS) and Perceived Stress
Scale (PSS). Ethical considerations of the
questionnaires were approved prior to the study
proper. Both the questionnaires were administered
using Google Forms.
Outcome Measures
Hypothesis testing and RxC contingency table were utilized to determine any
significant difference and association among the
groupswho use printed and electronic on GWA.
