BACKGROUND: Spontaneous basal activation that might be related to survival mechanism of tumor cells by allowing them to escape from apoptosis has been proven in some tumor cells, but it has not been evaluated in malignant melanoma tissue. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate basal activation of NF-κB using immunohistochemical analysis and demonstrate its clinical significance in cutaneous malignant melanoma tissue. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-five cases of acral lentiginous melanoma(ALM) from 20 patients were selected. Immunohistochemical analysis was performed to detect nuclear localization of classic NF-κB heterodimer, p50 and p65 in the formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissues. RESULTS: In about 50% of cases, nuclear expression of NF-κB heterdimer, p50 and p65 was detected, 12(48%) and 13(52%) of 25 cases of ALM, respectively. However, the nuclear ex-pressing of p50 and p65 was not significant for tumor thickness or level of invasion in ALM. CONCLUSION: We demonstrated basal NF-κB activation in malignant melanoma, but we need to research further to demonstrate its clinical significance.

Ulnar neuropathy at the elbow (UNE) may seem easy to diagnose when the characteristic clinical manifestations are present, and electrodiagnostic studies have high sensitivity, although they are non-localizing in some cases and unable to reveal structural lesions. Ultrasonography is noninvasive and able to find the exact location of the lesion and visualize perineural structures. We present two cases of UNE in which we found hypoechoic mass lesions near medial epicondyle with ultrasonography and discuss its usefulness in diagnosis of UNE.

It is possible to compare three-dimensional image of patterned injury in virtual space with object using 3D/CAD supported photogrammetry(FPHG). this method make it possible to examine patterned injuries of skin, soft tissue and bone for matching instruments in shape, size and angle without altering. Generally, 3D measuring of objects require 3D digitizer or series of photographs taking by metric camera. We developed program which calibrate pictures taken by non-calibrated commercial camera and un distorted image. This image and objet model n can be examined with respect to matching shapes using 3D/CAD system.

Three-dimensional thermoluminescence (TL) spectra from MgAl2O4 irradiated with UV light were measured over 300~600 K and 300~800 nm. The peak positions of TL glow curves were shifted to lower temperature with increasing the exposure time of UV light. The 476 K TL glow curve is due to the second kinetics and its activation energy and escape frequency factor are calculated to be 0.85 eV and 1.92x10(6) sec(-1), respectively. The TL spectra were split into 530 nm and 700 nm emission bands which were associated with V(2+) and Cr(2+), respectively. The linearity range of 700 nm emission band is smaller than that of 530 nm emission band, but the saturation time of 700 nm emission band is longer than that of 530 nm emission band.

Incidence of valve leaflet escape after mechanical valve replacement is very low. We report a case of leaflet fracture and escape in an Edwards TEKNA bileaflet valve.

Endovascular embolization or embosurgery of brain tumors can be used to reduce neoplasm vascularity prior to surgical resection. Two challenges with embosurgery relate to insufficient perfusion pressure into the tumor and inadvertent escape of infused agents into parenchymal branches of the adjacent brain. This report describes a multi-catheter and coil technique to improve tumor perfusion and prevent reflux into normal branches.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the preliminary effects of the Peer Relationship Enhancement Program in adolescents deemed to be in an at-risk group for Internet and smartphone addiction. METHODS: The study group consisted of 33 adolescent participants (24 boys and 9 girls) at risk of Internet and smartphone addiction in small and medium-sized cities. The subjects participated in 8 consecutive sessions of the Peer Relationship Enhancement Program. The Korean Internet Addiction Proneness Scale, the Korean Smartphone Addiction Proneness Scale, the Real-Ideal Self Discrepancy Scale, the UCLA Loneliness Scale, the Peer Intimacy Scale, and the Escaping from the Self Scale were evaluated before the initial and after the final session. A paired t-test was performed to statistically analyze the data. RESULTS: The Peer Relationship Enhancement Program led to a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in self-reported measures of The Korean Internet Addiction Proneness Scale, the Korean Smartphone Addiction Proneness Scale, and the Real-Ideal Self Discrepancy Scale. CONCLUSION: The Peer Relationship Enhancement Program reduces the risk of Internet and smartphone addiction and effectively prevents the associated problems.

Angiographic findings were analysed in 22 cases of coronary occlusive disease which were selected from 50 cases of coronary arteriographies done in Department of Radiology, Seoul National Un iversity Hospital from September, 1981 to August, 1984. There were 16 cases of single vessel disease, in which 12 were LAD involvement and 4 were RCA involvement, 2 cases of two vessel and 4 cases of three vessel disease. Site, degree and extent of stenotic involvement in those occlusive coronary diseases were anal ysed with review of literature for selective coronaryarteriography. Since coronary arteriography is the final and accurate examination for the evaluation of occlusive coronary arterial disease, it is expected to be widely used for the diagnosis of occlusive coronary arterial disease which is rapidly increasing recently in this country.
