Korean Journal of Urology 1990;31(1):99-102
We studied the activity of adenosine deaminase in the urine of 38 patients who were divided into four groups :Urinary tract tuberculosis without ureteral obstruction(Group I ), Urinary tract tuberculosis with ureteral obstruction (Group II ), Urinary tract infection ( Group III ) and control subjects (Group IV). In patients with urinary tract tuberculosis with ureteral obstruction the adenosine deaminase activity in aspirated renal urine was significantly higher than for the rest of the groups (p<0.001). Adenosine deaminase activity in renal aspirated urine has proved to be a simple and reliable diagnostic method for urinary tract tuberculosis with ureteral obstruction.

3.A Case of Thromboangiitis Obliterans of the Spermatic Cord.
Korean Journal of Urology 1989;30(2):277-279
Thromboangiitis obliterans is a specific, recurrent segmental, inflammatory, obliterative vascular disease involving principally medium sized arteries and veins of the extremies. Thromboangiitis obliterans of the spermatic cord is an exceedingly rare condition and reported less than 10 cases in the literature. We submit a case suffering from thromboangiitis obliterans of the spermatic cord.

4.Imaging of tbe Prostatic Carcinoma and Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia by Transrectal Ultrasound.
Korean Journal of Urology 1990;31(3):368-371
Transrectal ultrasonography is one of the most available techniques to evaluate prostatic disease and is far more accurate than conventional ultrasonography. A retrospective review of ultrasonographic characteristics of the prostate was made in an attempt to define the ability of the technique to distinguish benign from malignant prostatic disease. Analysis included evaluation of the capsule, abnormal foci (echo brightness, echo thickness) and calcification. Transrectal ultrasonography was performed in 79 cases and the results were compared with the pathologic results of prostatic tissue obtained by transperineal ultrasound guided or transurethral prostatic resection. Acoustic characterization of abnormal small foci within the gland has a moderate degree of overlap, but may suggest the differentiation of benign and malignant disease.

Korean Journal of Urology 1991;32(5):750-753
Hematuria has been the most reliable sign of injury to the urinary system. Thus. the rapid and accurate detection of hematuria in the emergency room is essential. In 149 patients with renal trauma in whom radiographic studies defined the severity of injury, we compared the degree of microscopic hematuria determined by dipstick and microscopic urinalysis. Falge positive dipstick occurred in 5(3.6%) patients and false negative dipstick in 4(3.3% ) patients. The dipstick method had greater than 96.4 percent sensitivity and specificity for detection of microscopic hematuria. The correlation between the 2 methods was low (Person`s coefficient 0.4114). However. 85.5 percent or the urine sample with more than 20 red blood cells per high power field corresponded to a dipstick results of 3+ (Regression Y = 0.0129x + 2.93, F = 28.12. p < 0.005). Although microscopic hematuria may be quantified more accurately by microscopic analysis, the urine dipstick is a rapid and reliable screening test with high degree of sensitivity and specificity for the microscopic hematuria in patients with renal trauma.

BACKGROUND: Recently, the incidence of hepatitis A virus (HAV) infection has been increasing in Korea, and an outbreak among healthcare workers (HCWs) has also been reported. This study aims to evaluate the seroepidemiology of hepatitis A among HCWs at an 820-bed teaching hospital in Korea, thereby facilitating HAV vaccination for these HCWs. METHODS: In June 2009, we assessed the total immunoglobulins against the HAV in the serum samples of 907 HCWs by using VIDAS Anti-HAV Total (bioMerieux, France). RESULTS: Seropositivity for HAV significantly increased with age (P<0.001): 0% for < or =25 years, 9.4% for 26-30 years, 39.5% for 31-35 years, 66.7% for 36-40 years, 85.7% for 41-45 years, 96.0% for 46-50 years, 98.3% for 51-55 years, 95.8% for 56-60 years, and 100% for > or =61 years. CONCLUSION: Since HCWs aged 20-40 years show low seropositivity for HAV vaccination against hepatitis A should be considered in all these HCWs.

8.Significance of CT Scan as a Diagnostic Tool in Renal Injury Associated with Abdominal Trauma.

Korean Journal of Urology 1988;29(1):77-82
In 21 selected patients suspected of sustaining major renal trauma we evaluated with CT scan primarily and compared the findings on computerized tomography with those of excretory urography in 13 patients. We conclude that computerized tomographic staging for renal trauma is more sensitive and specific than excretory urography, and used primarily when multiple traumatic injuries and/or major renal injury are suspected, which has facilitated greatly the diagnosis and treatment of kidney injury.

Korean Journal of Urology 1988;29(3):477-480
From 1980 to 1986, 32 patients had suffered from bladder rupture. Among these patients 14 were due to direct blow, 10 due to traffic accident, 2 due to slip down, 1 due to falling down, and unknown origin was seen in 4 cases. We evaluated these patients with age, sex, presence of pelvic bone fracture, urologic sign and symptom, size and site of ruptured bladder due to blunt trauma.

10.Invasive Fungal Infections in the Era of Antifungal Resistance.
Korean Journal of Medicine 2015;88(5):518-524
Invasive fungal diseases are an important cause of morbidity and mortality in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients. The recent introduction of new antifungal agents seemed to open a new era for the treatment of invasive fungal infections. However, widespread use of prophylactic and therapeutic antifungal agents has lead to the emergence of antifungal resistance and potentially compromises their clinical utility. By understanding the mechanisms of drug resistance, new strategies can be utilized to minimize the emergence of drug resistance and to promote the development of innovative therapeutic approaches. In the meantime, close monitoring of antifungal resistance and its evolution is warranted in a clinical setting given the limited repertoire of antifungal drugs.
