1.Conjunctival autograft transplantation for recurrent pterygia

The pterygia is an ocular diseases with a multifactorial etiology and is found more commonly in tropical areas such as Vietnam. The surgical treatment of pterygia is still a big challenge to opthalmologists due to high rate of its recurrent. In this study we performed the conjunctival autograft transplantation (CAT) on 66 patients (81 eyes) of recurrent pterygia with dramatically success: 79 eyes (97.5%) have excellent and good results. There are 2 eyes (2.5%) have light proliferation of fibrovascular tissue in the border of graft. This study showed that CAT is good procedure for preventation of recurrent pterygium and should be applied popularly in the departments of ophthalmology of the provinces.

2.The pterygium excision by the conjunctival autograft combining with the single mitomycin C application

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of conjunctival autograft with single intraoperative application of MMC 0.04% within 3 minutes in primary and recurrent pterygium and to compare this method with other’s. Sixty three patients (68 eyes: 50 eyes with primary and 18 eyes with recurrent pterygium) underwent pterygium excision with conjunctival autograft and single application of MMC 0.045/3 minutes. Patients were followed from 3 to 12 months after operation. Results: recurent rate of 1.96% (1 eye) was observed in the group of recurrent pterygium. There were 2 cases of superficial punctuate keratitis. Conclusion: this study indicates that intraoperative administration of a single dose of 0.04% MMC with conjunctival autograf is an effective treatment for prevention of recurrence of pterygium

9.Aesthetic result of dense-packing single-hair autologous grafting for eyelash.

OBJECTIVETo explore the aesthetic result of dense-packing single-hair grafting for eyelash.
METHODSTwenty-six female cases were treated with the donor sites at the occipital safe area. The single-hair grafts were made with the hair of 4cm in length. The grafts were transplanted to the upper lid margin with needle technique, 30-40 grafts at each side.
RESULTSThe hair grafts survived very well with good growth direction. It looked even better when it had a permanent wave or the mascara was applied. The survival rate of hair grafts was more than 95%.
CONCLUSIONSIt is feasible to improve the shorter and thinner eyelash by dense-packing single-hair grafts.

10.Basic and clinical research in the field of burn wound healing.

The basic and clinical research in wound healing have made great progress in China in the past 50 years. The method of "intermingle skin transplantation" which was first advocated by surgeons of Ruijin Hospital in 1966 greatly reduced the amount of autologous donor skin, thus making the coverage of an extensive burn wound possible. This method is also known as "Chinese therapy". In 1986, doctors of Jishuitan Hospital reported successful coverage of an extensive burn wound with microautografts and allogeneic skin. The basic research of wound healing has been carried out since 1992, a series of studies showed the characteristics of biological behaviours of cells in concern, extracellular matrix and growth factor, the mechanism underlying progressive injury in deep second burn wound, the effect of "skin island" and the local immune tolerance induced by it (which are the key factors of intermingle transplantation). The induction of local immune tolerance has now become the research hot subject of skin transplantation immunology. Stem cell research in the field of wound healing has been extensively carried out. The theory of "dermal template defection" has been proposed as one of the mechanisms of scar formation. On the other hand, great progress has been achieved in the treatment of burns on the basis of clinical researches. Doctors of PLA 304 hospital found that excision of eschar on patients with extensive deep burn injury at early shock stage greatly decreased the occurrence of complications and mortality. Doctors of Ruijin Hospital reported that healing of deep second burn wound could be improved by tangential excision of burn eschar within 24 hours after burn injury. Doctors of Xiangya Hospital reported patients suffering from deep burns of the hands got satisfied functional restoration when treated with tangential excision of eschar while degraded dermal tissue could be retained with transplantation of autoskin grafts.
