Cancer cells undergo substantial metabolic alterations to sustain increased energy supply and uncontrolled proliferation. As an essential trace element, iron is vital for many biological processes. Evidence has revealed that cancer cells deploy various mechanisms to elevate the cellular iron concentration to accelerate proliferation. Ferroptosis, a form of cell death caused by iron-catalyzed excessive peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), is a promising therapeutic target for therapy-resistant cancers. Previous studies have reported that long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) is a group of critical regulators involved in modulating cell metabolism, proliferation, apoptosis, and ferroptosis. In this review, we summarize the associations among iron metabolism, ferroptosis, and ferroptosis-related lncRNA in tumorigenesis. This information will help deepen understanding of the role of lncRNA in iron metabolism and raise the possibility of targeting lncRNA and ferroptosis in cancer combination therapy.

Journal of Clinical Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery 2015;29(12):1101-1103
OBJECTIVE:
To study the influence of Xuanfeijiedu granules on trace elements, immunoglobulin E (IgE), eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) of allergic rhinitis.
METHOD:
One hundred and ten cases of allergic rhinitis ere randomly divided into two groups, 55 cases of the observation group were treated with budesonide, 55 cases of the control group were treated with Xuanfeijiedu granules, the treatment efficacy and serum trace elements, IgE, ECP level were observed.
RESULT:
The total effective rate of observation group and control group were 92. 7% and 96. 4%, there was no significant difference between two groups (P>0. 05). Before treatment, the serum zinc (Zn), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn) and IgE, ECP levels of two groups were compared, there was no significant difference (P>0. 05); after treatment, the serum Zn level was significantly increased, the serum Cu, Mn, IgE, ECP levels were significantly reduced, and the observation group changed more significantly, there were significant differences between two groups (P<. 05).
CONCLUSION
Xuanfeijiedu granules in the treatment of allergic rhinitis can significantly improve the patient's serum trace elements and IgE, ECP levels, improve the state of patient's disease, and promote the rehabilitation of patients.

5.Effect of fuzheng jianpi recipe on content of trace element and immune function in children with spleen deficiency anorexia.
Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine 2002;22(6):429-431
OBJECTIVETo evaluate the efficacy and prospect of Fuzheng Jianpi Recipe (FZJPR) in treating children's Spleen deficiency anorexia (CSDA) by means of observing its effect on trace element content and immune function.
METHODSOne hundred and thirty cases of CSDA were treated with FZJPR, one dose per day in decoction, orally taken, 30 days for one therapeutic course. Levels of T-lymphocyte subsets, IL-2R, immunoglobulin and trace elements were determined before and after treatment, and compared with those in the control group consisted of 60 healthy children.
RESULTSIn the treated group, abnormal figures were shown in T-lymphocyte subsets, especially in lowering of CD3 and CD4 count before treatment, and IgG content was reduced also. After treatment, CD3, CD4, CD4/CD8 ratio as well as IgG and IgA were improved significantly (P < 0.01), IL-2R percentage approached normal. Moreover, the levels of Zn and Fe changed significantly (P < 0.01).
CONCLUSIONFZJPR could improve the trace elements content and immune function in CSDA children, so it is effective in treating CSDA.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Anemia in patients with inflammatory bowel disease significantly affects the quality of life. The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of and risk factors for anemia and to describe the management of anemia in patients with intestinal Behcet's disease (BD) in actual clinical practice. METHODS: We included 64 patients with intestinal BD who visited the outpatient clinic of a tertiary referral center in June 2011 and had available laboratory data for the subsequent 6 months. RESULTS: Anemia was detected in 26 patients (40.6%). After 6 months, anemia was still present in 14 of these patients (53.8%). The cause of anemia was investigated in eight patients (30.8%), and oral iron supplementation was prescribed to four patients (15.4%). Of these four patients, two (50%) recovered completely within 6 months. Anemia was associated with a high Disease Activity Index for Intestinal Behcet's Disease (DAIBD, p=0.024), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (p=0.003), and C-reactive protein (p=0.049) in univariate analysis. In multivariate analysis, the factor predictive for anemia in patients with intestinal BD was a higher DAIBD (> or =40; odds ratio, 4.08; 95% confidence interval, 1.21 to 13.71; p=0.023). CONCLUSIONS: Although anemia is common in intestinal BD patients, its clinical importance is overlooked in daily practice. Moderate to severe disease activity is predictive of anemia.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the effect of organic gallium and gallium chloride on bone metabolism and their therapeutic effect against tretinoin-induced osteoporosis in rats.
METHODSRat models of osteoporosis was established with intragastric administration of tretinoin at the daily dose of 85 mg/kg for 15 days and randomized into control, organic gallium and gallium chloride groups. After administration of the corresponding treatments (none for the control group) for 4 weeks, the changes of the indices for osteoporosis were evaluated through biochemical and pathological approaches.
RESULTSTretinoin induced obvious changes in bone structure and contents of bone calcium and other elements, causing also significantly increased tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) and alkaline phosphatase (AKP), which suggested the development of osteoporosis. Administration of organic gallium and gallium chloride treatments increased the bone density, bone cortex thickness and the percentage of bone trabecula, and Ga, Ca, P contents in the femur and teeth, but lowered the activity of TRAP and AKP, suggesting decreased bone conversion rate. Compared with gallium chloride, organic gallium required smaller dose with better safety to produce better therapeutic effect.
CONCLUSIONOrganic gallium can be safe and effective for treatment of tretinoin-induced osteoporosis in rats.
