Background: The Philippines has one of the highest prevalence of untreated tooth decay (TD) in the world. Toothache (TA) is a common sequela of chronic and untreated TD. Google Trends (GT) offers an inexpensive and fast method of assessing search trend for these health conditions. Objectives: This study aimed to characterize the regional and time-point variations in the Filipinos' internet searches for TD and TA. Methods: A descriptive analysis of a search query done on Google Trends using the search terms TD and TA was done. The parameters were constrained to include only data from the Philippines, from November 2009 to November 2019, under the health category, and the web search database. Results: The top three regions that had the highest searches for TA were MIMAROPA (100%), ARMM (100%), and Caraga (82%), while CAR (27%), Metro Manila (27%), and Ilocos Region had the highest search results for TD. From 2009 (19.85%) the searches for TA progressively increased until 2019 (92.61%), while the searches for TD remained comparable from 2009 (25.09%) to 2019 (25.98%). Conclusion The results of this study reveal regional and time-point differences in the Filipinos' search interests for TD and TA.

Cutaneous odontogenic sinuses are the most common cause of chronic draining sinus tracts on the face and neck. These lesions present as erythematous nodules with surrounding dimples, which intermittently drain purulent fluid. Although most patients do not have dental symptoms, careful questioning of a patient's past symptoms may help the clinician identify a dental etiology. A history of toothache in the affected area that resolves without dental intervention is useful information. Clinical and radiographic examination may reveal carious teeth with radiolucent areas. Elimination of the source of infection by endodontic treatment or tooth removal results in resolution of the sinus tract, typically within 2 weeks. Early precise diagnosis and appropriate dental treatment can circumvent unnecessary and ineffective antibiotic therapy or surgical treatment. We report a case of a cutaneous odontogenic sinus in the right cheek area.

Dental emergency patients have been looking for emergency room of general hospital and they could be treated only when the dentist of night duty exists. Although there are many analyses on the dental emergency patients visiting general hospitals, research on the dental treatment only has not been provided enough. We anticipated different aspects between the dental emergency patients visiting independent dental hospital and general hospitals. We analyzed dental emergency patients' chief complaints and received procedures for almost 1-year period in Won-Kwang dental hospital in Dae-jeon where there had been no dental emergency settings. With this 1574 patients' result, we tried to find appropriate treatment plans regarding dental emergency patients occurring at night and holidays.]]>

The objective of this article was to present two nonodontogenic conditions that may mimic odontogenic toothache: trigeminal neuralgia and burning mouth syndrome. Two cases are presented in which one is related to the upper left second premolar and the other is related to the upper left first molar. Both showed pain when chewing. These two cases highlight the complexities involved in diagnosing nonodontogenic toothache. This article demonstrates the importance of having a thorough knowledge of both odontogenic and nonodontogenic toothache, as well as the need for careful evaluation of the nature of the pain and history, clinical and radiographic examinations.

Garre's Sclerosing Osteomyelitis is seen primarily in children and young adult and occasionally in older individuals. It is also known as chronic nonsupprative sclerosing osteomyelitis, proliferative periositis of Garre, periostits ossificans. It is commonly associated with carious molar and a history of past toothache. Radiogrphically, a focal area of well-calcified bone proliferation may be seen that is smooth and often has a laminated apperance. This disease is thought to occur because of a low-grade infection or irritation that influence the potentially active periosteum of young individuals to lay down new bone. Its treatment is directed toward removing identifiable source of inflammation. Following successful treatment of dental pathology, remodeling of the mandible generally occurs naturally but the deformity may remain and surgical recontouring may be required. We report a case of Garre's sclerosing osteomyelitis, treated by surgical recotouring and antibiotic therapy, in 9-year old female with literature review.

Cutaneous fistula of dental origin is the most common type of cutaneous fistula that is formed on the face and neck. This lesion can be a diagnostic challenge to clinicians who are not familiar with cutaneous fistula since many patients with cutaneous fistula of dental origin do not have any complaints such as toothache. Diagnostic errors may result in multiple excisions, biopsies, and ineffective long-term antibiotic therapy. However, if the lesion could be suspected of being of dental origin, the diagnosis can be easily confirmed by radiologic examinations. We report four cases of cutaneous fistula of dental origin. All four patients had a characteristic cutaneous findings with chronically draining, fixed, erythematous papule on their nasolabial fold or submental region. Ultrasonography, fistulography or plain roentgenography were needed to confirm the diagnosis of cutaneous fistula originating from dental problems.

OBJECTIVETo compare the therapeutic effect between combination of Shu-stream and Ying-spring acupoints and routine acupoints selected by syndrome differentiation for toothache.

METHODSEighty-five cases were randomly divided into a combination of Shu-stream and Ying-spring acupoints group (group A, 43 cases) and a routine acupionts group (group B, 42 cases). In group A, according to the corresponding relationship between viscera-meridians and different kinds of teeth, the Shu-stream and Ying-spring acupoints at both sides of the corresponding meridians were sleeted. The group B was treated with acupuncture at Jiache (ST 6), Xiaguan (ST 7), Hegu (LI 4), erjian (LI 2), Neiting (ST 44). Yifeng (TE 17) and Fengchi (GB 20) were added for wind and fire attacking; Lidui (ST 45) and Quchi (LI 11) were added for intense stomach fire; Taixi (KI 3) and Zhaohai (KI 6) were added for deficiency fire flaming up. Electroacupuncture was applied in two groups, once every day, ten treatments constituted one course, the differences of effect and recurrence rate were observed after one course and half a year later.

RESULTSThe cured rate were respectively 88.4% (38/43)and 69.0% (29/42) in group A and group B, with a significant difference (P < 0.05). The recurrence rates were respectively 23.7% (9/38) and 55.2% (16/29) in group A and group B, with a significant difference (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSIONBoth short-term and long-term therapeutic effects of combination of Shu-stream and Ying-spring acupoints are significantly better than those of routine acupoints in treating toothache.

With change in the pattern of disease occurrence and increase in the interest in health, efforts to assess the health status on patients covering their subjective awareness at the same time as clinical and objective evaluation on health are continued. To measure health-related quality of life can be one of these efforts. This study was performed to evaluate the relevance of the quality of overall health-related-life and oral health condition. Also the second year (2014) materials in the 6th the National Health and Nutrition Survey were applied to this study. The factors affecting general health related quality of life measured by EuroQol-5 dimension (EQ-5D) have been confirmed by gender, age, education level, income level, private health insurance, perceived health status, toothache experience during the last 1 year, remaining tooth number. As oral health plays an important role in determining the overall health conditions, objective oral health state influences the whole body health. Hence, it can be regarded that oral health is ultimately related to the general health-related quality of life.

Cholesterol granuloma is usually found in chronic middle ear disease. However, it rarely occurs in the sinonasal regions and only a few cases have been reported in the literature. The etiology of the sinonasal cholesterol granuloma is not known yet, and the clinical manifestations are variable. The 78-year-old man complained of facial pain and toothache at first visit. The PNS CT had a homogenous isodense mass occupying right spenoid sinus and extending to right pterygopalatine fossa, infratemporal fossa and masticator space. The PNS MRI had characteristically high signal lesion at both T1- and T2-weighted images. The tumor was completely excised via transantral approach. Pathological confirmation was the cholesterol granuloma with fungal infection consistent with Aspergillus species. This patient is followed up without recurrence.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of dental anxiety with oral health behavior and dental caries experience among adolescents. METHODS: The subjects were 469 teenagers (238 middle school students and 231 high school students) in 15 different schools located in 7 regions of Bucheon in Gyeonggi Province, Daejeon, and others. A survey and interviews were conducted to evaluate subjects' oral health behavior and dental anxiety. Dental anxiety was additionally assessed by Corah's Dental Anxiety Scale. The caries experience of subjects was examined. RESULTS: There were no regional differences in dental anxiety. Girls felt more dental anxiety than boys did. Adolescents who did not receive treatment even when they needed it felt more dental anxiety than those who did receive treatment. There were also statistically significant differences in dental anxiety according to the type of treatment received. Adolescents who received extraction treatment or underwent oral surgery experienced more dental anxiety than those who received orthodontic or aesthetic treatment. Those who had a toothache or who experienced gingival bleeding felt more dental anxiety than those who did not have those conditions. Subjects with poor perceived oral health also had more dental anxiety. The number of decayed teeth and filled teeth was significantly correlated with dental anxiety. CONCLUSIONS: In adolescents, dental anxiety is related to their oral health behavior, the type of conditions they present with, the treatment received, and dental caries experience. Therefore, the kind of systematic programs that could relieve adolescents of dental anxiety should be prepared.
