Giant haemangioma of the tongue is a disease which can
obstruct the oropharyngeal airway and is presented with
obstructive symptoms. Due to its vascularity, inserting
laryngoscope for intubation can cause high risks, such as
inducing bleeding. Hypoxia and excessive bleeding must be
anticipated while securing the airway. We present a case of
novel usage of dexmetomidine as a conscious sedation agent for
awake fibre optic intubation in a 9-year-old child with
obstructive symptoms secondary to a huge tongue
haemangioma, who was presented for interventional
sclerotherapy of the lesion.

9.A case of the ectopic thyroid in a base of tongue
Journal of Vietnamese Medicine 1998;230(11):66-68
The incidence of ectopic thyroid is about 7%-10%. It generally appears in the midline due to abnormal migration. Rarely, ectopic thyroid is located at the heart, the mediastium, the lungs, the pancreas or adrenal glands. The authors report the case of a 36 years old, female patients who presents with symptoms of dysponia (hot potato speech) due to abnormal mass at the base of the tongue. Ultrasound detects no thyroid gland at the normal site. At the base of the tongue, there is an hypoechoic mass without hypervascularity on color Doppler, which is suspected for ectopic thyroid tissue. Then Tc99m sodium pertechnetate scanning shows thyroid tissue of the base of the tongue and there is no thyroid tissue in the normal location.
