OBJECTIVETo investigate the clinical outcomes of semicircular decompression in treating old thoracolumbar fractures and intractable neuropathic pain.
METHODSFrom September 2009 to September 2013, 21 patients with old thoracolumbar fracture and intractable neuropathic pain were treated with semicircular decompression. Among initial surgery, posterior pedicle screw fixation was used in these patients, with or without laminectomy. All patients were male, range in age from 20 to 28 years old with an average of (25.00±2.38) years. Vertebral body residual bone block resulted in intra-spinal placeholder more than 50%. All patients were complete spinal cord injury (ASIA grade) or cauda equina injury. VAS scores was from 6 to 10 points with the mean of 7.14±0.91. In these patients, MRI, CT, X-rays were performed; denomination and dosage of analgesics were recorded; nerve function and pain status were respectively evaluated by ASIA grade and VAS score before and after operation.
RESULTSAll patients were followed up from 8 to 32 months with an average of (17.29±6.02) months. All bone fragments of spinal canal were removed and spinal cord decompressions were achieved. At final follow-up, VAS scores were from 0 to 8 points with an average of (2.43±2.46) points, and were obviously reduced than peroperative data (P<0.05). Eleven cases of them stopped analgesic intake and 7 cases reduced using. Three patients' symptoms and VAS scores were not improved.
CONCLUSIONOld thoracolumbar fractures and intractable neuropathic pain need receive imaging examination as soon as possible and consider semicircular decompression therapy if bone fragments were in vertebral canal and spinal canal stenosis existed. This therapy can effectively relieve pain and profit nerve functional recovery.

OBJECTIVETo compare curative effect between complete denture with lingualized occlusion and anatomic occlusion on temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) of aged edentulous patients with severe residual alveolar ridge resorption.
METHODSSeventy aged edentulous patients with severe residual alveolar ridge resorption were recruited in this study and randomly assigned into two groups, thirty-five each. In Group A, patients received complete denture with lingualized occlusion, and in Group B, patients received complete denture with anatomic occlusion. The condition of TMD was examined and recorded by the same TMD specialist at baseline, 3 months and 6 months following denture delivery. The recovery effect of TMD was evaluated according to Fricton Index. Related data were analyzed statistically with t-test and rank sum test.
RESULTSThree months following denture delivery, the craniomandibular index (CMI) decrease value was (0.064 ± 0.022) in group A, and was significantly higher than that in group B (0.043 ± 0.018) (P < 0.01). Six months following denture delivery, the CMI decrease value was (0.084 ± 0.020) in group A, and was significantly higher than that in group B (0.070 ± 0.021) (P = 0.011<0.05).
CONCLUSIONSComplete denture with lingualized occlusion may be more conducive to the remission of TMD for aged edentulous patients with severe residual alveolar ridge resorption.

This study aims to investigate the effects of fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF-21) on learning and memory abilities and antioxidant capacity of D-galactose-induced aging mice. Kunming mice (37.1 +/- 0.62) g were randomly divided into normal control group, model group and FGF-21 high, medium and low dose groups (n = 8). Each group was injected in cervical part subcutaneously with D-galactose 180 mg x kg(-1) x d(-1) once a day for 8 weeks. At the same time, FGF-21-treated mice were administered with FGF-21 by giving subcutaneous injection in cervical part at the daily doses of 5, 2 and 1 mg x kg(-1) x d(-1). The normal control group was given with normal saline by subcutaneous injection in cervical part. At seventh week of the experiment, the learning and memory abilities of mice were determined by water maze and jumping stand tests. At the end of the experiment, the mice were sacrificed and the cells damage of hippocampus was observed by HE staining in each group. Reactive oxygen species (ROS), malondialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), catalase (CAT) and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) in the brain of mice were determined. The results showed that different doses of FGF-21 could reduce the time reaching the end (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05) and the number of touching blind side (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05) in the water maze comparing with the model group. It could also prolong the latency time (P < 0.05) and decrease the number of errors (P < 0.01 or P < 0.05) in the step down test. The result of HE staining showed that FGF-21 could significantly reduce brain cell damage in the hippocampus. The ROS and MDA levels of three different doses FGF-21 treatment group reduced significantly than that of the model group [(5.58 +/- 1.07), (7.78 +/- 1.92), (9.03 +/- 1.77) vs (12.75 +/- 2.02) pmol (DCF) x min(-1) x mg(-1), P < 0.01 or P < 0.05], [(2.92 +/- 0.71), (4.21 +/- 0.81), (4.41 +/- 0.97) vs (5.62 +/- 0.63) nmol x mg(-1) (protein), P < 0.01]. Comparing with the model group, the activities of SOD, GPx, CAT and T-AOC of the three different doses FGF-21 treatment groups were also improved in a dose-dependent manner. This study demonstrates that FGF-21 can ameliorate learning and memory abilities of D-galactose induced aging mice, improve the antioxidant abilities in brain tissue and delay brain aging. This finding provides a theoretical support for clinical application of FGF-21 as a novel therapeutics for preventing aging.

OBJECTIVETo study the clinical effects of the modified formula of Bazhengsan on the urination symptoms of chronic prostatis with damp-heat accumulated in the lower jiao.
METHODSA total of 72 chronic prostatitis patients with damp-heat accumulated in the lower jiao were equally randomized to receive the modified formula of Bazhengsan (the trial group) and the primal Bazhengsan (the control group), both for a course of 28 days. Then we observed the changes in the NIH-CPSI scores, scores on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) syndrome, maximum flow rate of urine (MFR) and results of the expressed prostatic secretion test (EPS).
RESULTSAmong the 31 patients of the trial group, 6 were cured, 10 achieved excellent results, 9 got improved, and 6 failed to respond, with a total efficacy rate of 80.6%. While in the control group, 4 were cured, 10 achieved excellent results, 11 got improved, and 7 failed to respond, with a total efficacy rate of 78.1%. Significant improvement was observed in NIH-CPSI scores, TCM syndrome and EPS results in both of the groups (P < 0.05), and the trial group showed significant difference from the control in the improvement of urination symptoms (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONModified Bazhengsan is effective in the treatment of chronic prostatis with damp-heat in the lower jiao. It can significantly improve its clinical symptoms, especially urination symptoms.

OBJECTIVETo isolate and characterize the side population cells (SP cells) in the lung adenocarcinomas cell line A549.
METHODSThe protein expression of ABCG2 in human lung adenocarcinoma cell line A549 was detected by immunohistochemistry. SP and NSP cells in the cell line A549 were isolated by FACS, and their differentiation was analysed. ABCG2 expression in the two cell subsets was detected by RT-PCR. The cell growth curves, cell division indexes, cell cycles, plate clone formation tests, migration and invasion assays, chemotherapeutic susceptibility tests, tests of the intracellular drug levels, and the tumor cell implantation experiments on nude mice were applied to study the biological properties of the two cell subsets. The expression of ABCG2 in the transplanted tumor in nude mice was detected by immunohistochemistry and RT-PCR.
RESULTSThe positive rate of ABCG2 expression in the A549 cells by immunohistochemistry was 2.13%. SP and NSP cells were isolated by FACS. The SP cells could produce both SP and NSP cells, while NSP cells only produced NSP cells. SP cells expressed ABCG2, but NSP cells did not. The proliferation and migration abilities of the two cell subsets were similar, but the invasion and tumorigenic ability of SP cells was significantly higher than that of NSP cells. The susceptibilities to DDP and its intracellular levels of the two cell subsets were similar, but the susceptibilities to 5-FU, VP16, NVB and GEM and their intracellular levels of NSP cells were significantly higher than those of the SP cells.
CONCLUSIONSSP cells in the human lung adenocarcinomas cell line A549 is enriched with tumor stem cells. An effective way to get lung adenocarcinomas stem cells is to isolate SP cells by FACS.
