1.COMPARATIVE ELECTROMYOGRAPHICAL INVESTIGATION OF THE BICEPS BRACHII, LATISSIMUS DORSI, AND TRAPEZIUS MUSCLES DURING FIVE PULL EXERCISES

To compare the effectiveness of five different muscle training movements on the biceps brachii, latissimus dorsi and trapezius muscles, eight weight-trained men (age, 20.4±0.5 years) were asked to perform three repetitions, at 70% one repetition maximum, of upright rowing (UR) and bent-over rowing (BR) exercises using a barbell ; and seated rowing (SR), front lat pull-down (LPf) and back lat pull-down (LPb) exercises using a Universal Machine. The activities of the biceps brachii, latissimus dorsi, and trapezius during the elbow flexsion and elbow extension phases of each exercise were analyzed using integrated electromyography (EMG) and normalized I-EMG. The results were as follows :1. The mean nrmsEMG values for the biceps brachii were larger during UR and LPf exercises than during BR, SR, and LPb exercises, suggesting that UR and LPf are more effective than the other movements for training the biceps brachii. The mean nrmsEMG values for the latissimus dorsi were larger during SR, LPf, and LPb exercises, followed by BR and UR exercises (in descending order), suggesting that SR, LPf, and LPb exercises are more effective than the other movements for training the latissimus dorsi.2. The mean nrmsEMG values for the upper trapezius were larger during UR and BR exercises than during SR, LPf, and LPb exercises, suggesting that UR and BR exercises are more effective than the other movements for training the upper trapezius. The mean nrmsEMG values for the middle trapezius were larger during BR and SR exercises than during UR, LPf, and LPb exercises, suggesting that BR and SR exercises are more effective than the other movements for training the middle trapezius. The mean nrmsEMG values for the lower trapezius were larger during BR exercise than during other movements, suggesting that BR exercise is more effective than the other movements for training the lower trapezius.3. In all the exercises, each muscle showed a higher nrmsEMG value during the elbow flexsion phase than during the elbow extension phase. This observation suggests that the training method examined in this study should emphasize the elbow flexsion movement.The present results suggest that UR exercise is the most effective movement for training the biceps brachii and upper trapezius, BR is most effective for training the upper trapezius, middle trapezius and lower trapezius, SR is most effective for training the latissimus dorsi and middle trapezius, LPf is most effective for training the biceps brachii and latissimus dorsi, and LPb is most effective for training the latissimus dorsi.
2.IN VIVO EVALUATION OF COMBINATION EFFECTS OF CHLOROQUINE WITH CEPHARANTHIN OR MINOCYCLINE HYDROCHLORIDE AGAINST BLOOD-INDUCED CHLOROQUINE-RESISTANT PLASMODIUM BERGHEI NK 65 INFECTIONS

The combination effects of chloroquine with Cepharanthin® or minocycline hydrochloride were evaluated against a blood-induced infection with chloroquine-resistant P. berghei NK 65 in ICR mice. The infected mice in an untreated control group showed a progressively increasing parasitemia leading to mouse death. A two-day dosage of 20 mg base/kg of chloroquine alone produced little effect against P. berghei NK 65 infection, and all mice died from day 13 to 15 with an increasing parasitemia. A four-day dosage of 4 mg/kg of Cepharanthin® alone produced no antimalarial activity, and all mice died by day 10. A four-day dosage of 50 mg/kg of minocycline hydrochloride alone produced a slight effect, but all mice died by day 18. Furthermore, mice given chloroquine in combination with Cepharanthin® died from day 14 to 15. Mice given Cepharanthin® plus minocycline hydrochloride also died from day 15 to 17. On the other hand, infected mice treated with chloroquine plus minocycline hydrochloride survived during the experiment. All mice treated with chloroquine alone, minocycline hydrochloride alone, chloroquine plus Cepharanthin® or Cepharanthin® plus minocycline hydrochloride showed low parasitemia levels during drug administration and a few subsequent days, but then malaria parasites re-increased in the bloodstream of the treated mice until death. On the other hand, malaria parasites in the mice given chloroquine plus minocycline hydrochloride decreased on day 6 and then could not be detected by microscopic examination during the observation period. This finding strongly suggests that the combination effects of chloroquine and minocycline hydrochloride are worthy of evaluation in human malaria. The results also clearly demonstrate the necessity and importance of in vivo experiments in estimating the activities of drugs.
3.Simultaneous Cholecystectomy and Dor Operation with Encircling Endocardial Cryoablation for Ventricular Aneurysm with Malignant Ventricular Tachycardia and Acute Cholecystitis.

A 68-year-old man underwent percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) to left anterior descending artery (LAD) seg 7 after acute anteroseptal myocardial infarction 8 years previously. He was admitted because of syncope attack due to sustained ventricular tachycardia and subsequent fibrillation. He was treated medically in the ICU after cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Medical treatment with amiodarone and lidocaine was not successful and he was transferred to our hospital for surgical treatment of malignant ventricular tachycardia (VT) associated with left ventricular aneurysm and acute cholecystitis that occurred during admission. Left ventriculogram showed left ventricular aneurysm (ejection fraction: 35%) without any significant coronary lesions. The patient successfully underwent a Dor operation (left ventriculoplasty), double encircling endocardial cryoablation without endocardial resection, and preoperative and intraoperative endocardial mapping. Cholecystectomy was simultaneously performed after complete closure of the median chest incision. The recurrence of VT was never recognized clinically or electrophysiologically. The extended encircling endocardial cryoablation without endocardial resection and preoperative and intraoperative electrophysiological study, was a simple and effective method for ventricular tachycardia.
4.Study on the Effect of Porcine Placental Extract Ingestion on Symptoms of Late-onset Hypogonadism Syndrome in Middle-aged and Elderly Men

Purpose: An open-label, single-arm study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of porcine placental extract (PPE) ingestion to improve late-onset hypogonadism (LOH) syndrome symptoms. In addition, we reported the safety of continuous PPE ingestion in biochemistry tests.Materials and Methods: Test food containing PPE was given daily to healthy male subjects with an Aging Males’ Symptoms (AMS) score of ≥27, who were assessed as having LOH syndrome. AMS score, blood hormone level, and other parameters were measured before the start of PPE ingestion, Week 4, and Week 8. And adverse events that occurred during the ingestion period were accumulated.Results: Excluding one subject who withdrew from the study due to an adverse event unrelated to the test food, 14 subjects were included in the analysis. In terms of AMS score, no improvement was observed at Week 4, whereas a significant improvement was observed at Week 8. AMS scores were further categorized into three subscales (psychological, somatic, and sexual) and analyzed. The results showed a significant improvement from baseline in somatic scores at Week 8. Meanwhile, no significant change in sexual hormone levels was observed. At Week 8, improvements from baseline were observed in renal function and LDL cholesterol level. There were no adverse events related to the test food.Conclusion: The study demonstrated that 8-week PPE ingestion in middle-aged and elderly men can improve LOH syndrome symptoms while having little effect on sexual hormone secretion.
