1.Epidemiological characteristics and disease control of meningitis in Xi′an
Chinese Journal of Microbiology and Immunology 2014;(9):713-717
Objective To analyze the epidemiological characteristics and disease control of epi-demic cerebrospinal meningitis (meningitis) in Xi′an in order to optimize the measurement for disease con-trol and prevention .Methods The reported cases , pathogen surveillance data and immunization coverage for meningitis were analyzed to evaluate the epidemic status , the number of healthy carriers and the disease control efficacy. Results The incidence of meningitis was 22.51/100 000 from 1951 to 1984 in Xi′an. Since the implementation of Expanded Immunity Program in 1984 , the incidence dropped significantly from the average incidence of 4.87/100 000 in 1980′s to 0.59/100 000 in 1990′s.The average incidence of men-ingitis was 0.095/100 000 from 2001 to 2011 and then showed a dramatic downtrend with no cases reported during 2012 to 2013 .Conclusion The analysis suggested that an expanded coverage of vaccine immuniza -tion and an enhanced disease surveillance system for meningitis should be used as the comprehensive meas -urements for the prevention and control of disease .

Chinese Journal of Infectious Diseases 2012;(12):740-743
Objective To describe the clinical features of patients with hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in popular period and other period. Methods All the HFRS patients from epidemic areas in Xi' an were surveyed retrospectively. The sociodemographic data, symptom characteristics and laboratory test results were collected.Chi-square test, rank test were used to analyze the data. Results Totally 429 HFRS cases were recruited including 280 male (65.3%) and the male/female ratio was 1.9 ∶ 1.Adults with 16-60 years of age were the main group, which accounted for 74.8% of the total cases. The constituent ratios of cases with 16-60 years of age in popular period and other period were 76.1% (245/322) and 71.0% (76/107),respectively; the sex ratios were 1.93∶1 and 1.74∶1,respectively; the time from fever onset to hospitalization was 3 d and 4 d,respectively; the time of hospitalization was both 10 d; the proportions of emergency cases were 59.8% (189/316) and 67.6% (71/105),respectively; the proportions of cured cases were 56.4% (181/321) and 43.4% (46/106),respectively.The clinical features were not significantly different between popular period and other period (all P>0.05).The immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibody positive rate was 85.4% (315/369) and those in popular period and other period were 88.4% (251/ 284) and 75.3% (64/85),respectively (x2 =8.968,P<0.01).There was a positive correlation between symptom severity and outcome of discharge (x2=18.558,P< 0.01),the more slight symptoms were related with the better outcome. Conclusion The clinical features are similar in cases from popular period and other period from Jan 2008 to Jun 2011.

Eurycoma longifolia, also known as Tongkat Ali in Malaysia,as one of traditional herbal medicines,is used for centuries in South-East Asia. With the discovery of anticancer and anti-HIV properties, this herbal medicine has attracted great attention recently. In this review, the following information on E.longifolia, including chemistry, bioactivities, pharmacokinetics, clinical studies, and side effects and safety, was introduced. Our results,to a certain extent, will provide scientific base for commercial utilization and clearance of the Tongkat Ali products with regard to consumers' safety.

Chinese Traditional and Herbal Drugs 1994;0(06):-
Objective To study their chemical components of Eclipta prostrata and identify their chemical structures. Methods The compounds were isolated by chromatography, purified by Sephadex LH-20 gel, identified by spectral analyses, and compared with the published data. Results Ten compounds were isolated and identified as 2, 2', 5″, 2″-terthiophene-5-carboxylic acid (Ⅰ), ?-sitosterol (Ⅱ), apigenin (Ⅲ), quercetin (Ⅳ), luteolin (Ⅴ), wedelolactone (Ⅵ), demethyl wedelolactone (Ⅶ), ecliptasaponin C (Ⅷ), luteoloside (Ⅸ), and linarin (Ⅹ). Conclusion Compound Ⅰ is a new compound from nature and compound Ⅹ is obtained from E. prostrata for the first time.

Objective To prepare a recombinant pneumococcal surface protein A clade 4 ( PspA4) and to analyze its immunogenicity. Methods The gene encoding PspA4 protein was synthesized and inserted into pET-20b to construct the recombinant expression plasmid. The transformed E.coli strains carrying expression plasmid were induced to express PspA4 protein.ELISA was performed to analyze the ti-ters of PspA4-specific IgG in a mouse model. Results The recombinant PspA4 protein of high purity ( 90%) was successfully prepared. The titers of PspA4-specific antibody in mice received PspA4 immuniza-tion were 106 times higher than those of the blank control group, suggesting that the expressed PspA4 protein had the advantage of high immunogenicity. Conclusion This study suggested that the PspA4 protein might be used as one of the candidate protein for the development of pneumovax and laid a foundation for further in-vestigation on pneumococcal protein based vaccine.

Objective:To explore CPEB4 expression in patients with NSCLC and its prognostic value. Methods:The CPEB4 mRNA expres-sion levels were detected by real-time quantitative PCR,while the expression levels of proteins were detected by Western blot. The protein expression in formalin-fixed samples were analyzed by immunohistochemistry. The prognostic significance of CPEB4 in NSCLC patients was investigated by Log-rank and Cox proportional hazard regression model. Results:The mRNA and protein expression levels of CPEB4 in NSCLC cell lines were both higher than those in normal lung cell line. The mRNA and protein expression levels of CPEB4 were significantly upregulated in NSCLC tissues compared to the adjacent non-tumor tissues. The CPEB4-positive expression ratio was 38.2% in the formalin-fixed samples.N stages were identified as the relative factors of CPEB4 expression(P<0.05).Cox multivariate analysis showed significant relationships between overall survival and T stage, and between N stage and CPEB4 expression.Conclu-sions:CPEB4 expression was elevated in NSCLC and was related with the prognosis.Hence,it may be a potential target in NSCLC treat-ment.
