1.Study on the ecological association between natural radioactivity and childhood leukemia in Guangdong province

Objective This study was undertaken to evaluate the ecological association between terrestrial natural radionuclide,indoor radon concentration,natural radioactivity and leukemia incidence among children under 18 years of age.Methods Data were gathered from the disease surveillance program and literature reading while software SPSS 13.0 was used to calculate the Spearman's correlation.Results The incidence rates of childhood(0-18 year)leukemia showed significant differences in different places with the highest as 3.13/105in Jiangmen area and the lowest as 0.42/105 in Maoming area.The incidence in Jiangmen was 7.45 times higher than that in Maoming.There was a rank correlation between the incidence of childhood leukemia and the mean concentrations of natural radio-nuclides in soll(226Ra and 232Th),with a Positive correlation observed for overall leukemia(rs=0.70,P=0.011;rs=0.66,P=0.02 for226 Raand 232Th respectively)and acute lymphoblastic leukemia(ALL)(rs=0.66,P=0.019;rs=0.64,P=0.025 for 226 Ra and 232Th respectively).Associations between the incidence of childhood leukemia and the indoor γ radiation dose rate,the total annual average effective dose equivalent from natural background radiation were also analyzed(both rs=0.59,P=0.042).Conclusion The natural radioactivity was likely to be a causative factor for childhood leukemia in Guangdong.
2.Urethroplasty with pedunculated preputial flap and testicular tunica vaginalis for long anterior urethral stricture: A case report and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVETo explore the treatment of urethral stricture.
METHODSWe retrospectively studied the clinical data of 1 case of long anterior urethral stricture treated by urethroplasty with pedunculated preputial flap and testicular tunica vaginalis, and summarized the treatment of the disease with review of the relevant literature.
RESULTSThe operation was smooth and successful, and no such complications as fistula and urethral stricture were found during the follow-up.
CONCLUSIONUrethroplasty with pedunculated preputial flap and testicular tunica vaginalis as a substitute is feasible for the treatment of urethral stricture. The key to a successful operation is the proper choice of a urethral substitute.

3.Expression of cyclooxygenase-2 and vascular endothelial growth factor in human prostate cancer and its significance.

OBJECTIVETo evaluate expressions of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in primary prostate cancer and its clinical significance.
METHODSExpressions of COX-2 and VEGF were detected by immunohistochemical assay in tissues of 40 prostate cancer and 10 benign prostatic hyperplasia samples.
RESULTSCOX-2 and VEGF levels in prostate cancer were much higher than those in BPH. The degrees of cancer malignancy and invasion positively correlated with the expressions of COX-2 and VEGF. COX-2 level positively correlated with VEGF level.
CONCLUSIONThe abnormal expression of COX-2 plays an important role in the development of primary prostate cancer. COX-2 and VEGF are good molecular markers of prostate cancer which are hopeful to be used for the assistant diagnosis and the prediction of prognosis of prostate cancer.

4.Mechanism of chondrocyte apoptosis in Kashin-Beck disease and primary osteoarthritis: a comparative study.

OBJECTIVETo investigate chondrocyte apoptosis and the expressions of Bcl-2, Bax, Fas and iNOS in the articular cartilage between Kashin-Beck disease (KBD) and primary osteoarthritis (OA) and explore the difference in pathogenesis between the two diseases.
METHODSThe articular cartilage specimens were collected from 15 normal human subjects, 15 adult patients with KBD and 15 with OA. Chondrocyte apoptosis was detected by TUNEL method, and the expressions of Bcl-2, Bax, Fas and iNOS in articular cartilage were examined with B-SA immunohistochemistry.
RESULTSThe percentages of apoptotic chondrocytes positive for TUNEL staining in the articular cartilage were significantly higher in patients with KBD and OA than in normal control subjects (F=20.90-53.16, df=42, P<0.01), and the erosive areas of the articular cartilage contained greater percentage of apoptotic chondrocytes than the non-erosive areas in the same patient with KBD (t=4.154, df=28, P<0.01) or OA (t=6.004, df=28, P<0.01). No significant difference was noted in the positive apoptotic chondrocytes between KBD and OA (t=1.329-1.362, df=28, P>0.05). The percentage of chondrocytes positive for Bcl-2, Bax, Fas and iNOS were significantly higher in KBD and OA patients than in the control subjects (F=25.46-215.31, df=42, P<0.01), and significant differences were observed in Bcl-2, Bax, Fas and iNOS expressions between the erosed areas and non-erosed areas in articular cartilage in patients with KBD (t=2.608-7.77, df=28, P<0.05) and OA (t=2.278-5.413, df=28, P<0.05), but their expressions showed no significant difference between the two diseases (t=0.284-1.590, df=28, P>0.05).
CONCLUSIONThere was no significant difference in apoptotic chondrocytes and Bcl-2, Bax, Fas and iNOS expressions in the cartilage between adult patients with KBD and OA.

5.Effects of selenium and/or iodine deficiency on chondrocyte apoptosis in rats.

OBJECTIVETo explore the effects of selenium and/or iodine deficiency on chondrocyte apoptosis in articular cartilage in rats.
METHODSForty-eight Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into selenium deficiency group, iodine deficiency group, combined selenium and iodine deficiency group, and control group. Chondrocyte apoptosis was detected by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase biotin-dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) method, and Bcl-2 and Bax in articular cartilage were stained by immunohistochemistry in F3 generation of rats.
RESULTSIn articular cartilage, the positive rate of apoptotic chondrocytes stained by TUNEL in the upper and middle zones in selenium deficiency group, iodine deficiency group, and combined selenium and iodine deficiency group (all P < 0.05) were significantly higher than that in control group. The apoptotic chondrocytes were prominent in the middle zone. The positive percentage of chondrocytes apoptosis was not significantly different among these three groups (P > 0.05). Compared with the control group, the expressions of both Bcl-2 and Bax were significantly higher in the upper and middle zone in the selenium deficiency group, iodine deficiency group, and combined selenium and iodine deficiency group (all P < 0.05); however, the expressions of Bcl-2 and Bax were not significantly different among these three groups (P > 0.05).
CONCLUSIONSelenium and/or iodine deficiency may induce chondrocyte apoptosis.

6.Improved anti-tumor efficiency against prostate cancer by docetaxel-loaded PEG-PCL micelles.

This study primarily focused on the systematic assessment of both in vitro and in vivo anti-tumor effects of docetaxel-loaded polyethylene glycol (PEG)2000-polycaprolactone (PCL)2600 micelles on hormone-refractory prostate cancer (HRPC). By using solvent evaporation method, PEG-PCL was chosen to prepare doxetaxel (DTX)-loaded mPEG-PCL micelles (DTX-PMs), with the purpose of eliminating side effects of the commercial formulation (Tween 80) and prolonging the blood circulation time. The prepared DTX-PMs had an average particle size of 25.19±2.36 nm, a zeta potential of 0.64±0.15 mV, a polydispersity index of 0.56±0.03, a drug loading of (8.72±1.05)%, and an encapsulation efficiency of (98.1±8.4)%. In vitro cytotoxicity studies indicated that DTX-PMs could effectively kill LNCap-C4-2B cells and show a dose- and time-dependent efficacy. The hemolysis test showed that DTX-PMs had less hemocytolysis than the commercial product of Duopafei®. A sustained in vitro release behavior and prolonged circulation time in blood vessels were observed in the DTX-PMs. Furthermore, when compared with Duopafei®, the DTX-PMs dramatically reduced the prostate specific antigen (PSA) level and tumor growth of prostate tumor-bearing nude mice in vivo. In conclusion, the DTX-PMs can lower systemic side effects, improve anti-tumor activity with prolonged blood circulation time, and will bring an alternative to patients with HRPC.

7.Survey on mental disorders among registered residents and non-registered residents in Shenzhen

Objective To study the prevalence and distribution of mental disorders among registered and non-registered residents in Shenzhen. Methods An epidemiological survey on mental disorders were carried out in Shenzhen by stratified multi-stage randomized sampling method; 7134 respondents were assessed through face-to-face interview, using the WHO standardized version on World Mental Health (WMH) Survey Initiative of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI3.1). Results (1)The weighting prevalence of mental disorders was 21.87%. The prevalence of non-registered residents was significantly higher than that of the registered residents (22.34% vs. 19.99% ; OR= 1.15,95%CI: 1.03-1.29; P<0.05) and the prevalence of females was significantly higher than that of males (22.68% vs. 19.67%; OR=1.20,95%CI: 1.07-1.34; P<0.05). The weighting prevalence of mood disorders, anxiety disorders and psychoses were 9.62%, 14.45% and 1.40%, respectively. (2) The weighting twelve-month incidence of mental disorders was 13.42%. The incidence of non-registered residents was significantly higher than that of the registered residents (13.80% vs. 11.90%; OR=1.19, 95%CI: 1.03-1.36; P<0.05). (3)The co-morbidity rate between mental disorders was 35.76%. (4)The prevalence and severity of mental disorders were associated with sex, household situation of registration, marital status, education, economic condition and occupation status. Conclusion Mental disorders have become common diseases and serious public health problem in Shenzhen, with non-registered residents and females deserve more attention.
8.Course of disease and related epidemiological parameters of COVID-19: a prospective study based on contact tracing cohort.

Objective: To analyze the course of disease and epidemiological parameters of COVID-19 and provide evidence for making prevention and control strategies. Methods: To display the distribution of course of disease of the infectors who had close contacts with COVID-19 cases from January 1 to March 15, 2020 in Guangdong Provincial, the models of Lognormal, Weibull and gamma distribution were applied. A descriptive analysis was conducted on the basic characteristics and epidemiological parameters of course of disease. Results: In total, 515 of 11 580 close contacts were infected, with an attack rate about 4.4%, including 449 confirmed cases and 66 asymptomatic cases. Lognormal distribution was fitting best for latent period, incubation period, pre-symptomatic infection period of confirmed cases and infection period of asymptomatic cases; Gamma distribution was fitting best for infectious period and clinical symptom period of confirmed cases; Weibull distribution was fitting best for latent period of asymptomatic cases. The latent period, incubation period, pre-symptomatic infection period, infectious period and clinical symptoms period of confirmed cases were 4.50 (95%CI:3.86-5.13) days, 5.12 (95%CI:4.63-5.62) days, 0.87 (95%CI:0.67-1.07) days, 11.89 (95%CI:9.81-13.98) days and 22.00 (95%CI:21.24-22.77) days, respectively. The latent period and infectious period of asymptomatic cases were 8.88 (95%CI:6.89-10.86) days and 6.18 (95%CI:1.89-10.47) days, respectively. Conclusion: The estimated course of COVID-19 and related epidemiological parameters are similar to the existing data.
