OBJECTIVEDiscussion on utility and purposed value of obesity and abdomen obesity when body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), waist to hip ratio (WHR) used as indexes predicting hypertension, hyper-blood glucose, and both clusters, to provide scientific basis for the decision on the indexes and their cut-off points of obesity and abdomen obesity in Chinese people.
METHODSUsing the data of diabetes mellitus (DM) from epidemiological studies carried out in 11 provinces/autonomous regions/municipalities of China from July 1995 to June 1997. Partial relative analysis, logistic multi-factors regression analysis, interaction analysis were used. Relative risk (RR), attributable risk proportion (ARP) and population attributable risk proportion (PARP) of hypertension, hyper-blood glucose, and the both cluster as BMI, WC, WHR with the different cut off points were analysed.
RESULTS1) The correlations between BMI, WC and blood pressure, blood glucose were better than the WHR. 2) After adjusted by age, sex, occupation leisure physical activity, education degree and the family history of DM, the results suggested that BMI, WC, WHR were important predictive factors, with relative importance as BMI > WC > WHR. 3) There were augment interactions on BMI, WC and WHR with hypertension, hyper-blood glucose, with the interaction of BMI and WC in particular. Their pure attributable interaction proportion were from 5.95% to 29.34%. 4) The values of RR were about 2.5 when BMI >/= 23, >/= 24 and >/= 25, suggesting the relationship with exposure factors and diseases were with medium and high maleficent extent. Their ARP were from 0.580 to 0.623 with PARP from 0.259 to 0.425. The values of RR were from 2.06 to 3.08 as WC >/= 85 cm in males, WC >/= 80 cm in females while WC >/= 90 cm in males, WC >/= 80 cm in females, which suggested that the relationship with exposure factors and diseases were in medium and high maleficent extent. Their ARP were from 0.515 to 0.676 while PARP from 0.241 to 0.431.
CONCLUSIONSSince the maleficent extent of exposure factors to diseases, the acceptability for overweight and obesity in population, and the prevention and care for overweight and obesity were just in the introduction stage in China. The utility value of predicted hypertension, hyper-blood glucose in BMI and WC seemed to be better then in WHR. We suggested that BMI used as the obesity index, with the diagnostic cut-off point BMI >/= 24. WC as the abdomen obesity index. The diagnostic cut-off points are suggested to be WC >/= 85 cm in males, and WC >/= 80 cm in females.

Objective:To explore the relationship between air pollution and the number of pneumonia hospitalization in a children's hospital in Changsha. Methods:Children who have been in this hospital for the treatment of pneumonia between December 2013 and December 2015 were enrolled in this study.Based on daily meteorological data and air pollution data from December 2013 to December 2015 in Changsha,we constructed a generalized additive model to analyze the relationship between air pollution and the number of pneumonia hospitalization. Results:During the research, the average concentration of PM2.5 and PM10 exceeded the Grade Ⅱ national standards for air quality. The average concentration of SO2 exceeded the Grade Ⅰ national standards. The change of all the 3 main air pollution indexes showed strong statistical relationship with the change of the number of pneumonia hospitalization (P<0.05),among which, the impact of SO2 ranked number 1,followed by PM2.5 and PM10.Effect of atmospheric pollution on the number of pneumonia boys was basically same as that in the total pneumonia children (P<0.05).The effect on girls showed no statistical relationship in both models (P>0.05).Conclusion:The concentrations of SO2'PM2.5 and PM10 are positively correlated with pneumonia hospitalization number of children, and their effect on boys is more obvious than that in the girls.

Objective To investigate the occurrence of carotid atherosclerosis in a population of permanent residents (age ≥40 years) at high risk of stroke in Xuejiadao Street,Huangdao District,Qingdao City, and to provide a scientific basis for reduction of carotid atherosclerosis in high-risk communities. Methods Using a cluster sampling method,10 007 permanent residents of age ≥40 years were enrolled in the study.Based on data from an early population screening project,1 478 subjects at high risk of carotid atherosclerosis and stroke were included for analysis. These study subjects were divided into a carotid atherosclerosis risk group and a normal group.General data were recorded, and the results of a physical examination and clinical and biochemical tests were used to analyze risk factors. Results Of 1 478 high-risk subjects aged (58.8± 9.7) years,726 had normal arteries.Of these,264 (36.36%) were males and 462 (63.64%)were females.Carotid atherosclerosis was identified in 752 cases aged (61.4± 9.5) years, with a detection rate of 50.88%.Of these,390 were males (51.86%) and 362 were females (48.14%).Univariate analysis showed that age, male sex, history of heart disease, diabetes,or hypertension, smoking, alcohol intake, waist circumference, and elevated homocysteine and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels were positively correlated with carotid atherosclerosis in those at high risk of stroke, while physical exercise showed a negative correlation;these results were statistically significant (P<0.05).Multiple logistic regression analysis [OR (95%CI)] showed that age [1.621 (1.410-1.865)],male sex [0.474 (0.378-0.594)],history of heart disease [1.336 (1.085-1.645)],diabetes [1.312 (1.021-1.685)],or hypertension [1.408 (1.074-1.846)],and increased low-density lipoprotein cholesterol [1.444 (1.191-1.751)] were positively correlated with carotid atherosclerosis in those at high risk of stroke, while physical exercise [0.810 (0.690-0.950)] showed a negative correlation;these results were statistically significant (P<0.05).Conclusion Targeting elderly men at high risk of stroke for intervention and guidance to manage hypertension, diabetes, and other chronic diseases,as well as comprehensive preventive and control measures, including reasonable physical exercise, can effectively reduce the occurrence of carotid atherosclerosis in communities.

Infant nutritional status evaluation is a basic experimental skill in the experimental teaching of nutrition and food hygiene. The construction of this virtual simulation experiment can solve the problems of activeness and poor coordination of infants and young children in the actual operation of the experiment. And based on the application of this virtual simulation project, the experimental teaching method of preventive medicine was explored. This experiment adopted online and offline mixed teaching method, which enriches teaching measures and strengthens the standardized process of infant nutritional status evaluation. After 3 semesters of practice from spring 2018 to spring 2020, the proportion of students who achieved excellent grades was 30.09% (34/113), 56.02% (279/498) and 66.79% (1 080/1 617), respectively, which increased significantly year by year ( Ptrend < 0.001). Among all the 2 228 students, 1 983 students (89%) believed that this experimental teaching could better cultivate the ability of autonomous learning. Through the study of virtual simulation experiments, students have improved their subjective initiative, and laid a foundation for the improvement of students' overall quality and the requirements of school elite education.

Whether direct manipulation of Parkinson's disease (PD) risk genes in the adult monkey brain can elicit a Parkinsonian phenotype remains an unsolved issue. Here, we used an adeno-associated virus serotype 9 (AAV9)-delivered CRISPR/Cas9 system to directly co-edit PINK1 and DJ-1 genes in the substantia nigras (SNs) of two monkey groups: an old group and a middle-aged group. After the operation, the old group exhibited all the classic PD symptoms, including bradykinesia, tremor, and postural instability, accompanied by key pathological hallmarks of PD, such as severe nigral dopaminergic neuron loss (>64%) and evident α-synuclein pathology in the gene-edited SN. In contrast, the phenotype of their middle-aged counterparts, which also showed clear PD symptoms and pathological hallmarks, were less severe. In addition to the higher final total PD scores and more severe pathological changes, the old group were also more susceptible to gene editing by showing a faster process of PD progression. These results suggested that both genetic and aging factors played important roles in the development of PD in the monkeys. Taken together, this system can effectively develop a large number of genetically-edited PD monkeys in a short time (6-10 months), and thus provides a practical transgenic monkey model for future PD studies.
