1.Pineal mechanism of danggui shaoyao powder on anti-aging.
Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine 2008;28(5):444-447
OBJECTIVETo study whether Danggui Shaoyao Powder (DSP) is by way of improving pineal function to realize its anti-aging effects.
METHODSForty aged rats were randomly divided into the sham operated group (A), the pinealectomized group (B), the sham medicated group (C), the pinealectomized and medicated group (D). The medication given was gastric perfusion of DSP for 3 weeks. Learning and memory ability of rats was observed using Morris water maze and the serum melatonin (MLT) concentration of the rats was measured by radio-immunoassay.
RESULTSThe average escape latency in Group B was significantly longer than that in other groups (P <0.05). The times of passing through the platform and the percentage of swimming distance in Group C were significantly higher than those in other groups (P <0.05). The serum MLT was higher at daytime than at night in Group C and D (P <0.05); that at daytime in Group C was higher than Group A (P <0.05) and also higher in Group D than Group B; that at daytime was higher in Group C than Group D; that at night markedly decreased in Group D as compared with Group B (P <0.05).
CONCLUSIONDSP could increase the melatonin secretion and improve learning and memory ability. Since its effects reduced after pinealectomy, it could be deduced that improving pineal function should be one of the action mechanisms for anti-aging.

Purpose To investigate the expression of Beclin1, LC3 and mTOR in colorectal cancer ( CRC) and their significance. Methods Immunohistochemistry, Western blot and real-time PCR were employed to detect the expression of Beclin1, LC3 and mTOR in CRC. Results The positive expression rate of Beclin1, LC3 and mTOR in 242 cases of CRC was 90. 50%, 87. 19% and 46. 28%, respectively, which were higher than that in adjacent tissues ( P<0. 05 ) . Moreover, the expression of LC3 in moderately and poorly differentiated CRC was higher than that in well differentiated CRC, and the positive rate of LC3 in CRC with lymph node metastasis was higher than that in CRC without lymph node metastasis. The overexpression of mTOR was related to lymph node metasta-sis (P<0. 05), but both differentiation degree and lymph node metastasis were not associated with Beclin1 (P>0. 05). The expres-sion of LC3 was positively correlated with Beclin1 and negatively correlated with mTOR in colorectal cancer (rs =0. 593, P<0. 01, rs= -0. 165, P<0. 01), and the expression of Beclin1 was not associated with mTOR (P>0. 05). Kaplan-Meier survival analysis re-vealed that the five-year survival rate of patients without nodal metastasis, positive expression of Beclin1, LC3 and negative expression of mTOR was higher than those with nodal metastasis, negative expression of Beclin1 and LC3, and positive expression of mTOR. Cox survival analysis results revealed that LC3, mTOR and lymphnode metastasis were independent prognostic factors. The results of IHC, real-time PCR and Western blot in fresh CRC tissues indicated that the expression of Beclin1, LC3 and mTOR in colorectal cancer was significantly higher than that in adjacent tissues (P<0. 05). Conclusions The aberrant expression of Beclin1, LC3 and mTOR may be associated with the development and progression of colorectal cancer. The simultaneous detection of Beclin1, LC3 and mTOR genes in colorectal cancer may be helpful for the evaluation of the progressive degree and the judgment of prognosis.

Objective To explore the characteristic of transcranial color-coded sonography(TCCS)and contrast-enhanced transcranial color-coded sonography (CE-TCCS) in patients with intracerebral hemorrhage and thiers clinical value. Methods 66 patients were randomly selected, whose preliminary clinical diagnosis were intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH).The patients were followed up by TCCS in acute phase, subacute phase and chronic phase. The changes of the echo, boundary and the hematoma volume were recorded in different stages. In acute phase, patients' complications of intracerebral structure were observed.32 patients were selected randomly to underwent CE-TCCS examination in the subacute phase. The size, shape and the perfusion situation of hematoma were observed. The results of CE-TCCS were compared with the results of TCCS.Correlation analysis was made between the results of ultrasound and CT scan. Results (1) CT results:61 patients (61/66) were confirmed ICH through CT scan.(2) TCCS results:50 patients (50/61) with ICH could show the bleeding site.TCCS showed that 33 patients with ICH accompanied by intraventricular pressure, haematoma defeats ventricle and midline shift in acute phase. The echo became lower and the boundary became more clear with time. The long diameter, wide diameter, thickness diameter and volume of hematoma in different stages on TCCS had a good correlation with that on CT scan.(3)CE-TCCS results:30 cases of intracerebral hematoma could be clearly displayed the situation of hematoma through the ipsilateral temporal window.Compared with TCCS,CE TCCS had a better correlation with CT scan on the measurement of the hematoma length, width. The images of 2 cases observed through contralateral temporal window failded to be clearly shown. In 7 cases of ICH,visible low-enhanced edema area could be seen around the hematoma. The width of the edema area had a good correlation with the CTP result. Conclusions TCCS could clearly show the bleeding sites, hematoma volume and complications and the features of ICH in different stages of disease.TCCS could be used to monitor the condition of patients with ICH and recognized the disease progression initially.CE-TCCS had a much more clear display of intracerebral hematoma location, shape, boundary. At the same time,CE-TCCS could provide blood perfusion information of surrounding tissue in hematoma so that it could observe the change of peripheral edema more convenient.

Objective To evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of bladder-preserving local resection combined with intra-artery chemotherapy for patients with T1G3 bladder cancer. Methods Thirty five cases with T1G3 bladder cancer were analyzed retrospectively. Patients were all treated by bladder-preserving local resection combined with intra-artery chemotherapy. Results Thirty five cases were followed up. The time of follow-up ranged from 7 to 116 months, and mean time was(66.0±18.3)months.The 5 year recurrence and bladder-preserving rate were 48.6 %(17/35)and 68.6 %(24/35),respectively.The overall and tumor specific survival at 5 years was 77.1% (27/35)and 82.9 % (29/35).The effect of bladder-preserving local resection plus intra-artery chemotherapy was satisfactory. Moreover, intra-artery chemotherapy had no obvious side effects. Conclusion Bladder-preserving local resection combined with intra-artery chemotherapy not only can retain normal bladder function, decrease in the recurrence, but also does not reduce the survival rate. It is an effective treatment for some patients with T1G3 bladder cancer instead of cystectomy over-treatment.

Chinese Medical Journal 2011;124(20):3420-3422
A 52-year-old female patient with Hashimoto encephalopathy was admitted to hospital for clinical treatment, and the findings on MR spectroscopy (MRS) and MR imaging (MRI) in the brain were reported. MRS revealed the decreases in N-acetylaspartate (NAA/Cr=1.19) and myo-inositol peaks, and the elevations in lipid, lactate, glutamate/glutamine multiplet and choline (Cho/Cr=1.21) peaks which supported a cerebral inflammatory change, in addition to multifocal hyperintensities on T2WI and fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) images, slight hyperintensities on diffusion weighted imaging (DWI), hypointensities on T1WI. The atrophy of the brain was revealed on follow-up MRI two years later.
