International Journal of Biomedical Engineering 2015;38(2):69-72,110
Objective The ability of working memory (WM) is to temporarily hold and manipulate information for cognitive tasks. The aim of this study was to investigate the causal flow distribution of multi-channel electroencephalographs (EEGs) during Sternberg visual WM task to help understand WM mechanism from the view of neural information transform. Methods Sixteen-channel EEGs were recorded from 8 healthy subjects during Sternberg task, total EEG data for 80 trials were recorded and preprocessed. The EEG powers for each channel were calculated via Fast Fourier transform (FFT).The feature channel was extracted based on the maximum power, and the feature frequency band for WM was determined by time-frequency analysis. The directed transfer function (DTF) and the value of causal flow in EEG feature frequency band were calculated. Results The EEG power focused on θ band (4-8 Hz) and at Fz channel. The maximum value of causal flow was located at Fz,and the first 4 maximum negative values of causal flow were at C3,C4,C5,C6.Conclusions The feature frequency band for WM is the θ band. The causal source (responsible region) is at Fz (frontal region) and the causal sinks are at C3,C4,C5,C6.

BACKGROUND:So far, engineered myocardium is stil facing many problems. Research has demonstrated that bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells can be differentiated into myocardial cells. Polyglycolide and polycaprolactone are commonly used artificial polymers, which have good biocompatibility.
OBJECTIVE:To observe the growth of the poly(glycolic acid)/poly(e-caprolactone) copolymer patch in vitro in normal myocardium and infarcted myocardium.
METHODS:Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells in Sprague-Dawley rats were separated using adherent separation and selection method, cultured in vitro. The third passage was labeled with DAPI. The bone marrow mesenchymal stem cellsuspensions (2×106/cm2) were produced and planted on poly(glycolic acid)/poly(e-caprolactone) copolymer scaffolds to form poly(glycolic acid)/poly(e-caprolactone) copolymer patch. After culturing for 48 hours, the specimens were observed under electron microscope, stained with hematoxylin and eosin, and then observed under light microscope. Rat models of myocardial infarction were established by ligating left anterior descending coronary artery. Poly(glycolic acid)/poly(e-caprolactone) copolymer patch was implanted into the normal and infarcted myocardium for 5 weeks. The survival of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells was determined by the detection of pathology.
RESULTS AND CONCLUSION:Results of light microscope and electron microscope demonstrated that bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells grew three-dimensional y on poly(glycolic acid)/poly(e-caprolactone) copolymer patch. cells and patch were adhesive wel . Under laser confocal microscopy, compared with the first week, bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells were marked by DAPI in the myocardium at the fifth week. There were bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells marked by DAPI in the infracted area. Results of hematoxylin-eosin staining exhibited that bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells were detected in the infarct area. These results suggested that bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells adhered to the poly(glycolic acid)/poly(e-caprolactone) copolymer stent wel . The complexes of poly(glycolic acid)/poly(e-caprolactone) copolymer and bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells can be used for reparation of myocardium.

Objective To investigate the incidence and the possible risk factors of hepatic dysfunction in patients with Graves' disease (GD). Methods Totally 280 outpatients with hyperthyroidism (caused by GD) were divided in two groups: untreated group (131 patients) and treated group (149 patients). The hepatic function, serum thyroid hormone, TGAb and TMAb were detected for analysis of the incidence, clinical characteristics and correlative factors of the hepatic dysfunction. Results Patients who had at least one abnormal result of liver function test accounted for 70.99% in untreated group and 61.07% in treated group. The most common abnormal hepatic function parameter in patients with thyrotoxic hepatic lesion was increased alkaline phosphate enzyme (ALP), which was 57.3% in untreated group and 51.0% in treated group. Abnormalities of alanine transaminase (ALT), aspartate transaminase(AST), gamma-glutamyl tyanspeptidase (GGT) and total bilirubin (TBIL) were 28.2% (37/131), 18.3% (24/131), 10.7% (14/131) and 21.4% (28/131) in untreated group and 21.5%(32/149), 15.4%(23/148), 4.7% (7/149) and 20.1% (30/149) in treated group, respectively. The possibility of thyrotoxic hepatic dysfunction was correlated with the patients' age and FT3 and FT4 levels, but not with the genesis and course of disease, sex, family history of hyperthyroidism, or levels of TGAb and TMAb. Conclusion Abnormal results of liver function test are commom in patients with hyperthyroidism. Increased alkaline phosphate enzyme and alanine transaminase are the most common abnormal hepatic function parameters; the possibility of thyrotoxic hepatic dysfunction is correlated with patients' age and the level of thyroid hormones.
