1.Accurate establishment of the retinotopic topography of area 17 in cats by intrinsic signal optical imaging.

The retinotopic topography of area 17 in cats was measured by optical imaging based on intrinsic signals. When stimulated with two neighboring gratings oriented orthogonally each other, which were positioned respectively in the upper and lower visual fields, one piece of cortex that had the retinal projection corresponding to the area around the border of the two stimulus gratings became blurred in the resultant function orientation map, because the neurons in this site received excitatory signals from both the horizontal and the vertical gratings via indirect ways. This functional map of the same cortex was compared with that elicited only by a horizontal or vertical grating stimulation in the whole visual field. Accordingly, the accurate position of the retinotopic eccentricity of the cortex in visual field can be demarcated by calculating the cross correlation coefficient of the two functional maps. Furthermore, compared with the electrophysiological measure of receptive fields of single cortical neurons, the retinotopic eccentricities revealed by optical imaging were identical. This experiment provides a fast and relatively accurate method to calculate the retinotopic eccentricities in a large cortical area of the visual cortex.

2.Pattern adaptation of relay cells in the lateral geniculate nucleus of binocular and monocular vision-deprived cats

To test whether the pattern adaptation in thalamus is dependent upon postnatal visual experience during early life, the responses of relay cells to prolonged drifting grating stimulation were recorded extracellularly from the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) of cats reared with binocular and monocular lid suture. In binocular vision-deprived cats, 68% of cells recorded showed significant adaptation to prolonged grating stimuli within 30 s, with a mean response decrease of 33%, and then stabilized gradually. This adaptation was stronger than that of relay cells in normal cats. In monocular vision-deprived cats, 53% of the cells driven by the deprived eye showed similar adaptation as did 44% of the cells driven by the non-deprived eye. These results indicate that pattern adaptation could be maintained or even enhanced after visual deprivation in early life. It is suggested that pattern adaptation is a general and intrinsic property of the dLGN cells, which may be mainly determined by genetic factors.
3.Visual functional changes during acute elevation of intraocular pressure.

Glaucoma is closely related to elevation of intraocular pressure (IOP). Many studies have done on the effect of chronic elevation of IOP on the retina and optic nerve, but less attention was paid to the effect of acute elevated IOP. Here we briefly review experimental studies on functional changes of the visual system from the retina to the visual cortex under acute elevated IOP condition, which is similar to that of acute primary angle-closure glaucoma.
4.Construction and identification of infectious molecular clone of foot-and-mouth disease virus strain O/CHINA/99.

Nine primers were designed for the full-length genome of O/CHINA/99 and each sequence fragment was obtained by RT-PCR, and cloned into pOK12 vecter, the full-length genome cDNA clone of O/CHINA/99 was identified by restriction enzymes digestion, PCR, and the whole genome sequencing. The results showed that the O/CHINA/99 whole genome was formed with the length of 8200 nt. The nucleotide sequence of the full-length cDNA shared 99.1% homology with its prototype. RNA synthesized in vitro by means of a bacteriophage T7 promter inserted in front of the cDNA led to the production of infectious particle upon transfection of BHK-21 cell using lipofectamine reagent, as shown by cytopathic effects. The rescued virus had high pathogenicity in mice by endermic infection too. All the results showed that an infectious molecular clone was successfully constructed and rescued virus could be obtained.

5.The clinical application and research on vas deferens laser coagulation sterilization.

OBJECTIVETo study the effect of Ar(+) laser on human vas deferens and to compare the effects of using different radiation levels with varying thickness of tissue and varying levels of injury.
METHODSAfter initial tests on animals, four human scrotums were opened and treated directly with Ar(+) laser radiation. Then 58 human individual scrotums were treated with radiation by the method of trans-skin puncture. The rate of sperm reduction and elimination was tested.
RESULTSIn 60 cases, the sperms were found to be eliminated completely after six months of radiation treatment. In 2 cases the sperms were found not to be eliminated completely due to the insufficient radiation.
CONCLUSIONAr(+) laser is one of the best forms of radiation for coagulation of vas deferens. It can be used to coagulate vas deferens without any complications or sequelae.

Objective:
Several COVID-19 patients have overlapping comorbidities. The independent role of each component contributing to the risk of COVID-19 is unknown, and how some non-cardiometabolic comorbidities affect the risk of COVID-19 remains unclear.
Methods:
A retrospective follow-up design was adopted. A total of 1,160 laboratory-confirmed patients were enrolled from nine provinces in China. Data on comorbidities were obtained from the patients' medical records. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to estimate the odds ratio (
Results:
Overall, 158 (13.6%) patients were diagnosed with severe illness and 32 (2.7%) had unfavorable outcomes. Hypertension (2.87, 1.30-6.32), type 2 diabetes (T2DM) (3.57, 2.32-5.49), cardiovascular disease (CVD) (3.78, 1.81-7.89), fatty liver disease (7.53, 1.96-28.96), hyperlipidemia (2.15, 1.26-3.67), other lung diseases (6.00, 3.01-11.96), and electrolyte imbalance (10.40, 3.00-26.10) were independently linked to increased odds of being severely ill. T2DM (6.07, 2.89-12.75), CVD (8.47, 6.03-11.89), and electrolyte imbalance (19.44, 11.47-32.96) were also strong predictors of unfavorable outcomes. Women with comorbidities were more likely to have severe disease on admission (5.46, 3.25-9.19), while men with comorbidities were more likely to have unfavorable treatment outcomes (6.58, 1.46-29.64) within two weeks.
Conclusion
Besides hypertension, diabetes, and CVD, fatty liver disease, hyperlipidemia, other lung diseases, and electrolyte imbalance were independent risk factors for COVID-19 severity and poor treatment outcome. Women with comorbidities were more likely to have severe disease, while men with comorbidities were more likely to have unfavorable treatment outcomes.
