Objective To study the effects of PNESF at different voltages on the life spans of ascites tumor bearing mice. Methods Forty ascites tumor bearing mice were divided into 5 groups and exposed to PNESF at 0,10,17,23 and 30 kV,respectively, for 30 minutes daily on 4 successive days. All of the animals then received routine care until death.Their eating habits, body weights and life spans were observed.A straight line fitting method was used for statistical analysis. Results The body weights of the mice exposed to 17 kV and 23 kV PNESF increased quickly during the four days of PNESF exposure. The weight gain in all groups declined after PNESF exposure was stopped.Thereafter the body weights of the mice exposed to the 17 kV PNESF increased more slowly than those in the control group. The mice exposed to the 23 kV PNESF gained weight more quickly than other groups. The mice exposed to the 17 kV PNESF lived the longest, demonstrating a lengthening of life of 25.5%compared with the control group. Conclusion Exposure to a PNESF of appropriate intensity might significantly increase the life span of ascites tumor bearing mice.

Objective To construct the recombinant adeno-associated virus vector(rAAV) expressing the human tissue kallikrein(HK)gene and to detect the expression of interested gene in human umbilical vein endothelial cells(HUVEC)which were infected with different titers of rAAV. Methods The HK gene was cloned into the pAAV-MCS and co-transfected AAV-293 cells with other two plasmids(the pAAV-RC,and pHelper)by lipofectamine. The recombinant AAV(rAAV HK)particles was harvested and its viral titer was measured.HUVEC were infected with different titers of rAAV-HK particles.Seventy-two hours later, the expression of the interested gene was detected by RT-PCR and ELISA.Results The AAV expression system of human tissue kallikrein gene was successfully constructed. The viral titer of recombinant AAV reached 6.2?10~7 particles/ml. When compared with the control group, the transcription of HK gene in the group which was infected with rAAV-HK increased significantly[(0.59?0.12)vs(0.26?0.05)(P<0.05)],and the expression of HK in the HUVEC was three times more than that in the control[(120.1?40.9)vs (30.8?12.8)](P<0.001).The transcription of eNOSmRNA in the infected HUVEC was higher than that of the control[(1.19?0.28)vs(0.66?0.11)](P<0.05).The transcription of caspase-3 mRNA was lower than that of the control[(0.30?0.25)vs(0.67?0.27)](P<0.05).And there was no obvious variation happened in the transcription of VEGF,ET-1,TR-B,bradykinin B1 receptor and Bradykinin B2 receptor. Conclusions When co-transfected AAV-293 cells with three plasmids (pAAV-HK,pAAV-RC,pHelper),the HK gene expression is significantly and stably increased. Introducing HK gene into HUVEC can improve endothelial transfection efficiency.

According to the principle of evidence-based medicine (EBM), Chinese medical literatures based descriptive statistical analysis of common Chinese medical syndrome types were performed. By data extraction, standardization, and frequency calculation of disease names and syndrome types from 286 literatures in line with the inclusion criteria, the frequencies of diseases and syndromes were obtained to analyze common syndrome types in clinical practice, to analyze the distribution features of disease related syndromes and syndrome related diseases, to analyze the distribution of basic Chinese medical syndrome types in clinical common diseases as a whole, thus providing reference for clinical and basic researches.

Chinese Acupuncture & Moxibustion 2006;26(1):15-17
OBJECTIVETo observe clinical therapeutic effect of point-through-point acupuncture on strephenopodia after apoplexy.
METHODSNinety-six cases of strephenopodia after apoplexy were divided into a treatment group (n=50) treated with point-through-point acupuncture and a control group (n=46) treated with normal acupuncture. Their clinical therapeutic effects and motor functions of lower limbs were investigated.
RESULTSBoth the methods could restore foot functional activities of various directions in the patient of strephenopodia after apoplexy (P < 0.01, P < 0.05), and the therapeutic effect of the treatment group was more obvious (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONThe point-through-point acupuncture has obvious therapeutic effect on foot functional activities of various directions in the patient of strephenopodia after apoplexy.

Objective To analyze the disease spectrum of patients admitted to the General Internal Medicine Unit at Peking Union Medical College Hospital, which is the first academic division of general internal medicine in the department of medicine within Chinese medical colleges and universities, and the value of general internal medicine unit in comprehensive hospitals. Methods A retrospective data review of patients admitted to the General Internal Medicine Unit from 2004 to 2008 was conducted from hospital information system and partially by chart review manually. Analysis of disease spectrum was performed thereafter. Results A total of 2593 patients were included in our study. It consisted of 1075 men and 1518women, with an average age of 45.1 years old. Forty point three percent of these patients were from Beijing, the local city, and the remaining 59.7% were from outside of Beijing. Sixty-four point nine percent (1683/2593)of these patients did not have a clear diagnosis on admission, including 758 fever of unknown origin (FUO) cases and 925 non-FUO cases. The final diagnostic rate of the FUO cases was 89. 2% [676/758, with the first three leading causes as diseases of the musculoskeletal system and connective tissue (29. 8%), certain infectious and parasitic diseases(26.3%), and neoplasm (14. 5%)] . The final diagnostic rate of the 928 non-FUO cases was 86. 8%(803/925), with the first three leading causes as musculoskeletal system and connective tissue(24.9%), neoplasm (15.5%), and diseases of blood and blood-forming organs(11.4%). Despite most diagnoses fitting into the above categories, the array of diseases was broad with as many as 550 discharge diagnoses from 2004 to 2008. Conclusions During 2004 -2008, there was a high proportion of cases that presented to the General Internal Medicine Unit at Peking Union Medical College Hospital with an unclear diagnosis, and the spectrum of diseases diagnosed was very broad. This kind of patient admitting model might not only benefit patients with no clear admission diagnosis and patients with multidisciplinary medical problems for whom it is usually difficult to be admitted by a specialty unit, but would also benefit medical students and residents by providing a good clinical medicine teaching base. These features show the value of general internal unit in comprehensive hospitals.
