2.Clinical characteristics and surgical treatment in 131 patients with thyroid carcinoma
Journal of Medical and Pharmaceutical Information 2004;0(8):29-33
This study was carried out on 131 patients (101 women and 30 men) with surgery for thyroid cancer at University Hospital No 103 from 1995 though March 2002. 49 patients (37.4%) were operated for the thyroid pathology before hospital admission.
Based on clinical examination and laboratory measurements, the authors found that the rate of thyroid cancer was 1-2% of all cancers. The rate of papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) was 62.6%, follicular (FTC): 19.8% medullary (MTC): 5.3%, squamous (STC): 2.3%, and nondifferentiated (NDTC) tumors: 9.9%. All surgical procedures were performed according to principal rules of oncologic surgery. 12 sternotomy and 5 tracheotomy during operation were performed. Accidental injuries of the esophagus (2 cases) and the trachea (3 cases) occur during the resection of tumor. After the surgical resection, the chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone therapy have been used in various combinations, one patient died and all survivors have been followed up

3.Diagnosis and treatment of thyroid microcarcinoma.
Journal of Clinical Otorhinolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery 2014;28(24):1911-1917
Papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) is defined as a papillary thyroid carcinoma measuring less than 10 mm in diameter. With the development of ultrasonic technology and the popularization of physical examination, the incidence of PTMC increased dramatically. Routine preoperative diagnostic methods include clinical examination, thyroid ultrasound and fine needle aspiration biopsy. But its treatment methods are still controversal. In this paper, we review literatures in recent years and discuss the clinical common problems of PTMC.

We describe a case of bilateral thyroid carcinoma in a 48-year-old woman. She was admitted to our hospital as a case of cervical nodular goiter. Multifocality of the thyroid nodules were evaluated by preoperative ultrasonography. The patient received bilateral thyroid lobe total resection and bilateral IV lymph node dissection. Medullary thyroid cancer was confirmed by intraoperative frozen pathology in the right lobe of thyroid gland and papillary thyroid microcarcinoma in the left lobe of thyroid gland. No tumor recurrence and metastasis were found after 3-months follow-up.

The recent prevalence of ultrasonography (US) and US-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) can make us easily diagnose papillary carcinoma of 1.0 cm or less in maximal diameter, which is called papillary microcarcinoma. In the face of the fact that cervical lymph node metastasis and multicentricity are two prominent clinical characteristics of papillary thyroid microcarcinoma, the question How to treat papillary microcarcinoma has given rise to controversy. In this review, we discuss the clinical behavior, the appropriate therapeutic strategies, the factors affecting prognosis, and the methods for following up the patients with papillary thyroid microcarcinoma.

Thyroglossal duct cyst and fistula is one of the most common birth defects. Thyroglossal duct carcinoma occurred in residual thyroglossal tube or thyroglossal duct cyst is a rare disease which is often difficult to diagnosis by clinical examination, and the prognosis by surgical removal is good. We present a 29-year-old female with thyroglossal duct cyst. In our case, the patient underwent thyroglossal duct cysts dissection without systemic preoperative examination for thyroid. Histologic analysis after a Sistrunk procedure revealed a small focus of papillary carcinoma within the TGDC. The patient has been followed up for 1 years without any metastasis.

Metastasis to the primary thyroid carcinoma is extremely rare. We report here a case of colonic adenocarcinoma metastasis to medullary thyroid carcinoma in a 53-yr old man with a history of colon cancer. He showed a nodular lesion, suggesting malignancy in the thyroid gland, in a follow-up examination after colon cancer surgery. Fine needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) of the thyroid gland showed tumor cell clusters, which was suspected to be medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC). The patient underwent a total thyroidectomy. Using several specific immunohistochemical stains, the patient was diagnosed with colonic adenocarcinoma metastasis to MTC. To the best of our knowledge, the present patient is the first case of colonic adenocarcinoma metastasizing to MTC. Although tumor-tumor metastasis to primary thyroid carcinoma is very rare, we still should consider metastasis to the thyroid gland, when a patient with a history of other malignancy presents with a new thyroid finding.
