Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery has gained a broad acceptance for various thoracic lesions because it is the minimally invasive surgery with little tissue trauma, less pain, improved cosmetic results and short recovery time. However, there are some limitations for this method, such as restricted visual sensory information to a two-dimensional image and limited maneuverability of the tips of the instruments. To overcome these limitations, advanced technology has been introduced and the da Vinci(TM) Surgical System (Intuitive Surgical Inc, Mountain View, CA, USA) became available in 2001. In Korea, the da Vinci(TM) Surgical System was introduced in Severance hospital (Yonsei University College of Medicine) in May 2005, and approved by KFDA in July 2005. Herein, we report the first experience of robot-assisted thoracic surgery with the da Vinci(TM) Surgical System in extirpation of a large teratoma in anterior mediastinum.

Journal of Central South University(Medical Sciences) 2010;35(6):638-640
OBJECTIVE:
To explore and summarize the experience of surgical treatment for primary retroperitoneal tumor (PRT)in children.
METHODS:
Clinical data of 17 patients with PRT treated from January 2001 to January 2008 were retrospectively analyzed, including image examination, pathologic examination and surgical procedure.
RESULTS:
Seventeen patients underwent complete resection; 8 benign PRT, and 9 malignant PRT were diagnosed by operation and postoperative pathologic examination. Vascular surgery was done on 11 patients, 6 cases of multi-visceral resection, 1 vascular transplant, and 1 multi-visceral resection. Two patients had recurrent malignant PRT.
CONCLUSION
For pediatric complex retroperitoneal tumors, complete resection can reduce the recurrence and improve the long-term survival.

The lung and stomach are very unusual sites for teratoma. The histologic findings of intrapulmonary and gastric teratomas are not different from those arising in usual sites, such as the ovary or testis. However, preoperative diagnosis is sometimes difficult to make partly because of unusual location. We report here two cases of teratoma, one intrapulmonary teratoma and the other gastric. The intrapulmonary teratoma in our study had an endobronchial tumor growth, which rules out mediastinal teratoma. Meanwhile gastric teratomas usually present as a submucosal tumor and most cases are reported in infancy and childhood. Gastric teratoma in this study occurred in a 27-year-old man. To the best of our knowledge, this case of intrapulmonary teratoma is the eighth and the gastric teratoma is the first to be reported in Korea.
