2.Biocontrol potential of endophytic fungi in tea (Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze) leaves against selected fungal phytopathogens

Aims:
Endophytic fungi are a diverse group of microorganisms that stay asymptomatically in the healthy tissues of the host. Many fungal endophytes are associated with the tea plant (Camellia sinensis) and the pathogens of the tea plant have the potential to grow as endophytes or act as latent pathogens during the initial growth of the plant. The present study aimed at screening tea endophytic fungi with the potential for control of a few critical phytopathogens, Fusarium sp., Lasiodiplodia theobromae, Pestalotiopsis sp. and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum while evaluating the efficiency of growth inhibition of these phytopathogens by the endophytic fungal isolates using in vitro assays.
Methodology and results:
Five endophytic fungal strains; Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, C. siamense, Daldinia eschscholtzii, Pseudopestalotiopsis chinensis and Phyllosticta capitalensis isolated from leaves of C. sinensis in Sri Lanka were evaluated for growth inhibition against plant pathogens; Fusarium sp., L. theobromae, Pestalotiopsis sp. and S. sclerotiorum using the dual culture assay and volatile compound-mediated inhibition assay. All the fungal endophytes used in this study exhibited antifungal activity against Fusarium sp., Pestalotiopsis sp. and S. sclerotiorum in the dual culture assay on PDA. Daldinia eschscholtzii (67.30%) and C. gloeosporioides (61.54%) showed strong antagonistic activity against S. sclerotiorum, while P. capitalensis (42.30%) demonstrated moderate activity. All the endophytic fungal strains showed moderate antifungal activities against Fusarium sp. The percentage growth inhibitions of Pestalotiopsis sp. by all the endophytic isolates tested were below 25.00%. In the volatile compound-mediated inhibition assay, none of the endophytic isolates showed visible inhibition against the phytopathogens used.
Conclusion, significance and impact of study
In this study, the fungal endophytes which showed potential antagonistic activity against the tested phytopathogens can be used to develop commercialized products of fungal biocontrol agents (BCAs) for controlling plant fungal diseases.

4.Clinical effect of “ Hypertension treating tea”

In the national Institute of traditional medicine, 60 subjects were diagnosed as hypertension of mild and moderate degree. The highest rate 34/60 (56,7%) of patients is at the group of 45-49 years old of age and 16/60 patients (22,6%) at 75-90. Among them there are 55% female (33/60) and 45% male (27/60). Results shows that in Hypertension treating tea, there is no toxic effect, the decrease of blood pressure manifested dramatically at the mild and moderate stage of hypertension, especially for systolic pressure; in addition, some biochemical indication of blood and proteinuria were improved positively, there is no side effect.
The hypertension treating tea is used simply and easily, with its components of domestic materia medica, it is nonexpensive and propriate in primary care

6.Differential Effects of Green Tea Polyphenol in the gamma-irradiation Induced Human Leukemic and Lymphoblastic Cell Damage.

PURPOSE: The green tea polyphenol (GTPP) has been known to exert antioxidant activity as a radical scavenger as well as cancer preventive and cancer growth inhibition effect. The aim of this study was to identify whether GTPP not only potentiate the growth inhibition effect in gamma-irradiated human cancer cell but also exert protection action for irradiated human normal cell. MATERIALS AND METHODS: GTPP (80% catechin including > 45% EGCG) added in the HL60, human leukemia, and NC37, human lymphoblast, before irradiation. After establishing the amount of GTPP and the dose of radiation, the cells were treated with the GTPP for 6 hours and irradiated with the determined doses. RESULTS: Viability when 10 mug/ml GTPP added before gamma-irradiation with 1 Gy to NC37 cells was not different in comparison with control but it when was irradiated with 3 Gy significantly different (1 Gy; P=0.126, 3 Gy; P=0.010). 20 mug/ml GTPP did not show significant difference in both NC37 cells irradiated with 1 Gy and 3 Gy (1 Gy; P=0.946, 3 Gy; P=0.096). Viabilities were significantly decreased with concentration of additional GTPP in HL60 with 1 or 3 Gy (1 Gy; 69.0+/-1.7% vs 42.4+/-1.3%, 3 Gy; 66.9+/-3.9% vs 44.2+/-1.6 %). CONCLUSION: In vitro study, we certified that when the cells were irradiated with dose below 3 Gy, GTPP provide not only anticancerous effect against cancer cells but also radioprotective effect in normal cells simultaneously. Theses results suggest the possibility that consumption of green tea could give the radioprotective effect and maximize the effect on internal radiation such as radioiodine therapy concomitantly.

7.Tea water- fluoride sources in preventation of dental caries.

This study was carried out to determine the fluoride concentration in tea water, natural water as well as the optimum of fluoride concentration in drinking water. Tea water was found to contain high concentration of fluoride. The fluoride concentrations in tea water range from 1.35 to 4.00 ppmF. These levels are 2-5 times higher than the optimum of fluoride concentration. Population in the North has habit of drinking tea water, so the source of fluoride in tea should be considered when determining total fluoride intake.

8.Study on the sadative effect of "antihypertensive tea"

A study on the effects of "antihypertensive tea" in the experimental mice has shown that the anti hypertensive tea reduced the natural activities of mice but had no hypnotic effect. The tea had synergic effect when combining with hexobarbital in lasting the sleep duration. The tea at dose of 0.05 - 0.2 ml/10g of body weight of mice (higher 5-20 times of clinical dose) had sedative effect.

10.Study on clinic character and confused psychology in farmers who growing tea in Song Cau state-run farm and Minh Lap commune, Dong Hy district, Thai Nguyen province

The descriptive epidemiologic study was carried out on 505 households with growing tea > two years at Song Cau state-run farm and Minh Lap commune, Dong Hy district, Thai Nguyen province from January to December 2002. The control group consisted of carders X79, I military section, under 60 years of aged, without psychology. Results showed that: the rate of insecticide intoxication in nervous system was relatively high 25.89% - 68.21% among farmers.
