AIM:To investigate the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the regulation of intracellular Ca2+induced by angiotensin II ( Ang II) in the primarily cultured medullary neurons .METHODS:Primarily cultured me-dullary neurons were prepared from 14-day-old embryos of Sprague-Dawley rats in the study .The identification of medullary neurons was assessed by double-labeling immunofluorescence .To explore the role of ROS , mainly the superoxide ( O2 ·-) , the O2 ·-generation was measured using the fluorogenic probe dihydroethidium ( DHE) .To determine intracellular free cal-cium concentration ( [ Ca2+] i ) , the neurons were loaded with the Ca 2+-specific dye Fura-2/AM.The cell viability after adding Ang II was also examined using CCK-8 assay.RESULTS:Most of the cultured cells were medullary neurons , more than 80%of which were glutamate positive neurons .Ang II (5 μmol/L) increased the level of ROS within 10 min in the medullary neurons .Ang II at 5μmol/L induced a significant [ Ca2+] i increase in the medullary neurons , and the effect of Ang II occurred rapidly and reached a peak within 20 min after administration. The level of [Ca2+]i started to decline after washout .The Ca2+elevation induced by Ang II was significantly decreased by apocynin or TEMPOL .No significant differ-ence in the cell viability between control group and 5μmol/L Ang II treatment group was observed .CONCLUSION:ROS is involved in the regulation of [Ca2+]i induced by Ang II in the primarily cultured medullary neurons , suggesting a poten-tial intracellular signaling mechanism involved in the Ang II-mediated oxidant regulation of central neural control of blood pressure.

PurposeTo explore MRI manifestations and diagnostic value of progressive massive fibrosis (PMF) in patient with coal workers' pneumoconiosis. Materials and Methods Twenty-four patients with PMF coal workers' pneumoconiosis underwent conventional MRI including T1WI, T2WI and SPIR. The signal intensity and morphological changes were analyzed. Results In 24 patients, there were 16 cases with bilateral pulmonary lesions and 8 cases with unilateral lesions. PMF was located in the upper lung field in 11 cases and in the upper and middle lung fields in 13 cases. The morphology of the lesions was stripe, round or irregular in shape. PMF were mainly isointense on T1WI, similar to adjacent soft tissue, and heterogeneous iso- or hypointense on T2WI and SPIR with patchy or stripe-like hypointensity. Conclusion PMF of coal workers' pneumoconiosis appears as a mass with iso- or hypointensity on T2WI and SPIR, with characteristic patchy-or stripe-like hypointensity. MRI is helpful in diagnosing PMF.

Abstract?AIM: To obtain the prevalence and risk factors of symptomatic dry eye disease ( SDED ) among college students in China.?METHODS:Population-based cross-sectional study. Students in Medical School of Lanzhou University were approached. A questionnaire was used to evaluate the prevalence of SDED and its risk factors. The diagnosis of SDED was based on reported symptoms and was established if the participants reported “often” or “all the time” once or more for 6-item questionnaire. Positive tests included a tear-film breakup time ( TBUT)≤10s and a fluorescein staining score ( FSS ) ≥1. Demographic information and possible factors that may contribute to SDED were analyzed in a step-wise multivariate logistic regression modelto assess risk factors of SDED.? RESULTS: There were 1139 participants ( 84. 37%response rate ) have completed the questionnaire, 475 males and 664 females aged 16-26y. The prevalence of SDED was 18. 70% [95% confidence interval ( CI)= 16. 59-20. 81]. A TBUT of ≤10s and a FSS≥1 were noted in 47. 67%(95% CI=44. 95-50. 57) and 13. 97%(95% CI=11. 95-15. 99) for all participants, respectively. The multivariate regression analysis revealed the following risk factors:daily reading time of≥4h(OR=1. 58,95% CI=1. 15-2. 18), daily computer use of≥4h ( OR= 1. 52, 95% CI= 1. 02-2. 25), and constant eyeglasses wearing (OR=1. 54,95%CI=1. 08-2. 13). The female gender, refractive surgery and contact lens ( CLs) wearing were not risk factors for SDED in this analysis.? CONCLUSION: The prevalence for SDED is high in Chinese college students. The risk factors include daily reading time of≥4h, daily computer use of≥4h and constant eyeglasses wearing.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the clinical effect of penile augmentation with superficial fascia retrocession.
METHODSThe first annular incision line was designed, reserving the inner plate 0.5 -0.8 cm. The second annular incision line was determined, according to the length of penile erection. The skin tissue between the double loops was stripped, reserving the superficial fascia and the superficial dorsal veins. Before the closure of two annual incision with no tension, the superficial fascia tissue was pushed proximally and fixed sectionally to augment penis.
RESULTSFrom Jun 2009 to Jun 2011, 60 patients with redundant prepuce or phimosis were treated with this method. During 3 to 12 months follow-up, the postoperative penile perimeter increased significantly. The glans were exposed and the prepuce looked smooth. The function of the penis maintained undamaged.
CONCLUSIONSThe penile augmentation with superficial fascia retrocession can make full use of autologous tissue to augment penis, meanwhile, redundant prepuce can be resected. It is very practical for clinical application.
