Genomics, Proteomics & Bioinformatics 2019;17(2):183-189
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is the most common nonfatal disease burden worldwide. Systemic chronic low-grade inflammation has been reported to be associated with MDD progression by affecting monoaminergic and glutamatergic neurotransmission. However, whether various proinflammatory cytokines are abnormally elevated before the first episode of depression is still largely unclear. Here, we evaluated 184 adolescent patients who were experiencing their first episode of depressive disorder, and the same number of healthy individuals was included as controls. We tested the serum levels of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), IgE, 14 different types of food antigen-specific IgG, histamine, homocysteine, S100 calcium-binding protein B, and diamine oxidase. We were not able to find any significant differences in the serum levels of hs-CRP or TNF-α between the two groups. However, the histamine level of the patients (12.35 μM) was significantly higher than that of the controls (9.73 μM, P < 0.001, Mann-Whitney U test). Moreover, significantly higher serum food antigen-specific IgG positive rates were also found in the patient group. Furthermore, over 80% of patients exhibited prolonged food intolerance with elevated levels of serum histamine, leading to hyperpermeability of the blood-brain barrier, which has previously been implicated in the pathogenesis of MDD. Hence, prolonged high levels of serum histamine could be a risk factor for depressive disorders, and antihistamine release might represent a novel therapeutic strategy for depression treatment.

OBJECTIVETo explore the clinical value and significance of retrograde caudate lobectomy.
METHODSFrom December 2003 to January 2005, 7 patients underwent retrograde caudate lobectomy in which division and ligation of short hepatic veins were carried out at the final stage of the procedure in stead of at the initial stage.
RESULTSThe procedures were carried out smoothly with no operative death in all the 7 cases including isolated complete caudate lobectomy in 4 cases, isolated partial caudate lobectomy in 1 case, combined right half liver resection in 2 case. The average operation time, blood loss and length of stay after operation was (273 +/- 44) min, (1114 +/- 241) ml (800-1500 ml) and 16 days respectively. Complications including pleural effusion and ascites in 1 case respectively were fully recovered. During the follow-up, 1 patient died at 6 months for tumor recurrence in lung and the remaining 6 patients are alive at the follow-up of 5 to 16 months.
CONCLUSIONSRetrograde caudate lobectomy is a new procedure suitable for those caudate neoplasms which are adhering to or infiltrating to IVC or too big to move side by side. The application of this technique can converse certain kind of caudate lobe tumor from non-resectable to resectable resulting in widening the indication.

OBJECTIVETo observe the effect of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) on bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) proliferation and explore the signaling mechanism involved.
METHODSMSC culture was performed following the classical whole bone marrow adhering method. The characteristics of MSC were identified by induction of multi-lineage differentiation and flow cytometry for surface marker analysis (CD34, CD45, CD29, and CD90). Following the addition of 50 nmol/L wortmannin, 50 µmol/L PD98059, 30 µmol/L SB203580, 10 µmol/L H89, 20 µmol/L Y27632, 1 µmol/L rapamycin, 10 µmol/L straurosporine, 6 nmol/L Go6976, or 50 µmol/L Pseudo Z inhibitors in the cell culture, the MSC were treated with 20 ng/ml VEGF and the changes of the cell proliferation rate was measured with MTT assay.
RESULTSCultured MSC were capable of multi-linage differentiation and did not express VEGF-R, CD29 or CD90. Treatment with 20 ng/ml VEGF obviously promoted MSC proliferation, and this effect was inhibited partially by p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) inhibitor rapamycin, PD98059, SB203580, Go6976, and straurosporine.
CONCLUSIONSVEGF promotes MSC proliferation in close relation to the AKT-PKC pathway, in which PKC signal pathway may play the central role.
