Chinese Journal of Integrated Traditional and Western Medicine 2014;34(3):303-307
OBJECTIVETo explore the effect of Chinese drugs for activating blood circulation and removing blood stasis (CDABCRBS) on carotid atherosclerotic plaque and long-term ischemic cerebrovascular events.
METHODSBy using open and control method, effect of 4 groups of platelet antagonists, platelet antagonists + CDABCRBS, platelet antagonists +atorvastatin, platelet antagonists +atorvastatin +CDABCRBS on carotid atherosclerotic plaque and long-term ischemic cerebrovascular events of 90 cerebral infarction patients were analyzed.
RESULTSThrough survival analysis, there was no statistical difference in the effect of the 4 interventions on the variation of carotid stenosis rates or ischemic cerebrovascular events (P > 0.05). The occurrence of ischemic cerebrovascular events could be postponed by about 4 months in those treated with platelet antagonists + CDABCRBS and platelet antagonists + atorvastatin +CDABCRBS. By multivariate Logistic analysis, age, hypertension, and clopidogrel were associated with stenosis of extracranial carotid arteries (P <0.05). Age, diabetes, aspirin, clopidogrel, CDABCRBS were correlated with cerebrovascular accidents (P < 0.05).
CONCLUSIONSWhether or not accompanied with hypertension is an influential factor for carotid stenosis, but it does not affect the occurrence of ischemic cerebrovascular events. CDABCRBS could effectively prolong the occurrence time of ischemic cerebrovascular events.

4.Effect of Injection of Botulinum Toxin Type A on Spasticity of Upper Extremity with Different Functional Status after Stroke
Chinese Journal of Rehabilitation Theory and Practice 2006;12(12):1088-1089
Objective To observe the effect of botulinum toxin A (BTX-A) on spasticity of upper extremity with different functional status after stroke. Methods 32 post-stroke patents with upper extremity spasticity were divided into the good function group (n=13) and poor function group (n=19) according to the function of upper extremity. All patients in two groups were treated with injection of domestic BTX-A at the biceps brachii and rehabilitation therapy. The efficacy was assessed with rang of motion, Modified Ashowrth Scale (MAS), Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) and Mot-FIM upper extremity before and 8-week after treatment. Results After treatment, the rang of motion and FMA scores of patients in two groups improved ( P<0.05), but the good function group was superior to the poor function group; the scores of MAS of two groups were not different ( P>0.05); the scores of Mot-FIM upper extremity of the patients in two groups increased ( P<0.05), and there was no significant difference between two groups ( P>0.05).Conclusion The effect of BTX-A injection at the biceps brachii on post-stroke patients with good function of upper extremity is superior to the patients with poor function of upper extremity.

Objective To explore the effect of maintenance hemodialysis(MHD)patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism on radial artery calcification and arteriovenous fistula( AVF) function. Methods The specimens of radial artery and cephalic vein were collected from the 35 cases of MHD patients at the first time of arteriovenous fistula operation. The specimens were collected again when AVF loss function more than 2 years.Specimens of the arteries were examined histologically for calcification with von Kossa staining.According to the parathyroid hormone levels, the patients were divided into three groups,as mild secondary hyperparathyroidism group (iPTH<300pg/L) of 16 cases, moderate secondary hyperparathyroidism group (iPTH≥300pg/L,<800pg/L) of 7 cases, severe secondary hyperparathyroidism group ( iPTH≥800pg/L) of 12 cases. The pathological results were analyzed. Results The pathological results showed radial artery calcification and calcium salt staining positive significantly increased in the 35 cases of MHD patients[9cases(25.7%)vs 2cases(8.6%)],compared with the first time of arteriovenous fistula operation when AVF loss function (χ2 =5.290,P=0.020).The artery calcification was also located in the layer of medial smooth muscle cells. The radial artery specimens with calcium salt staining positive increased significantly in severe hyperparathyroidism patients group[12cases(25.7%) vs 1case(6.3%)],compared with mild secondary hyperparathyroidism patients(χ2 =5.168,P =0.012).Conclusion Calcification risk of radial artery in AVF is increased in MHD patients with secondary hyperparathyroidism. And hyperparathyroidism may be one cause of AVF failure.

Objective To investigate the efficacy and safety of ERCP for biliary stricture with duct stone after liver transplantation. Methods Clinical data of 60 patients undergoing ERCP for biliary stricture with duct stone after liver transplantation between January 2013 and June 2014 were retrospectively analyzed. Results ERCP was successfully performed 78 times in 60 patients.Bile duct stenosis was cured in 24 cases (40%),improvement was observed in 27 cases (45%) and was not obvious in 9 cases (15%).Bile duct stones were successfully removed in 39 patients (65%).Incidence of post-ERCP complications was 13% (8/60),including mild pancreatitis in 1 case, hyperamylasemia in 5 cases, biliary tract infection in 2 cases, which were all resolved after conservative treatment. Conclusion ERCP is a safe and effective treatment for biliary stricture with duct stone following liver transplantation.

Journal of Leukemia & Lymphoma 2010;19(9):523-525
Objective To isolate and identify leukemia stem cells from acute myeloid leukemia patients for further research. Methods By Ficoll density gradient centrifugation, mononuclear cells were firstly separated from bone marrow of patients. According to specific surface markers, CD+34 CD+123 of leukemic stem cells were sorted by flow cytometer. Their ability of self-renewal and differentiation were evaluated by colony formation and cobblestone forming ability. At the same time, the purity and cell morphology of CD+34 CD+123 cells was analysed. Results Comparared with total mononuclear cells, the proportion of the CD+34 CD+123 cells after sorting was 10.7 %, and these cells showed the ability of colony forming and cobblestone forming, and the purity proportion of CD+34 CD+123 cells was 62.1%. Conclusion The leukemia stem cells were isolated successfully and could be used in further study.

Objective To investigate whether epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT)is involved in the anti-invasion and anti-metastasis effects of curcumin on MDA-MB-2 3 1 breast cancer cell line and further analyze the underlying mechanisms. Methods MTT method was used to detect the anti-proliferative effect of curcumin on MDA-MB-2 3 1 cell line induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS).The morphological changes were determined by optical and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. The expressions of Vimentin,E-cadherin,NF-κB and Snail were analyzed using RT-PCR and Western blotting. Results Curcumin could inhibit the occurrence of LPS-induced EMT of MDA-MB-2 3 1 breast cancer cell line, decrease the expression of LPS-induced EMT marker Vimentin and increase the expression of E-cadherin, resulting in the inhibition of in vitro cell motility and invasiveness. These actions were mediated by inactivating NF-κB-Snail signaling pathways. Conclusion Our data provide a new perspective of the anti-invasion mechanism of curcumin, indicating that the effect is in part due to its ability to inhibit the EMT process.
