Severinia monophylla (L.) Tanaka was widely distributed in many northern provinces of Viet Nam. The plant was a good folk remegy for cold, fever, cough. Materials and methods: Leaves and fruits of S. monophylla were collected in Me Linh district (province of Vinh Phuc), and analysed for essential oil by using gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Results: The yield of oil from leaves and fruits was 0.2% compared with air-dried materials. The main constituents of the oil included: caryophyllene (17.2%), sesquiphellandrene (15.1%) and alpha-caryophyllene (13.8%).
