1.Research progress in a novel H17N10 subtype of bat influenza A virus.
Chinese Journal of Virology 2015;31(1):80-84
A novel H17N10 subtype of the influenza A viruses was found in bats in 2012. Protein sequence and structural analyses revealed that the HA17 and NA10 proteins of this strain are different from corresponding ones in known influenza A subtype viruses. Both HA17 and NA10 proteins cannot bind to sialic acid, which indicates that they may have novel functions. This article briefly describes the state of current research into the H17N10 subtype of bat influenza A virus.

5.Research progress in novel PA protein members of influenza A viruses.
Chinese Journal of Virology 2014;30(6):689-693
Influenza poses a great threat to life and health in populations worldwide. Studies regarding the protein components of influenza viruses will facilitate the research and development of vaccines and diag nostic reagents. The influenza virus contains both structural and non-structural proteins. From the outset, it has been accepted that an influenza A virus possesses eight gene segments that encode eight corresponding viral proteins, respectively. Research has demonstrated that the M gene encodes the M2 ion channe! protein and the NS gene encodes the non-structural protein, NS2. In recent years, several novel viral proteins have been identified from influenza A viruses. This article will briefly describe the state of current research into PA-related proteins of influenza A viruses.

6.Evaluation of dry eye syndrom in C57BL/6.NOD-Aec1Aec2 mice
Chinese Journal of Experimental Ophthalmology 2013;(4):339-346
Background C57BL/6.NOD-Aec1Aec2 mouse is considered to be an idea model for the study of the pathogenesis of Sj(o)gren syndrome, but the cause of dry eye in these mice is unclear. Objective This study was to investigate the histopathological change of the ocular surfaces of C57BL/6.NOD-Aec1Aec2 mice, and to determine whether dry eye is developed spontaneously in these mice. Methods Forty-five clean C57BL/6.NOD-Aec1 Aec2 mice were used as the experiment group and forty-five C57BL/6J mice(both male and female)were used as the control group in this study.Detection of fasting blood-glucose,Schirmer' s test Ⅰ (S Ⅰ t),lissamine green staining and scoring of the corneal and conjunctival epithelium in the mice were performed at the age of 4,8,12,16 and 20weeks.Five mice from each group were sacrificed and their corneas were obtained to measure the central corneal epithelium thickness and to count the number of conjunctival goblet cells. In addition, lymphocyte infiltration in the lacrimal gland of the mice was examined with hematoxylin-eosin staining. The uhrastructure of the corneal epithelial cells and microvilli were assessed by scanning electron microscopy. The use and care of the mice were approved by the Experimental Animal Care Committee of the Third Military Medical University. Results No sign of dry eye was seen in both the 4-week-old C57BL/6.NOD-Aec1Aec2 mice and 4-week-old C57BL/6J mice. The S Ⅰ t values in 8-week-old,12-week-old,16-week-old and 20 week-old mice from the experiment group were (2.7 ±0.9) mm,(2.5 ±0.8) mm,(1.8±0.6) mm and (1.9± 0.1) mm,respectively, showing a significant reduction in comparison with those of the control mice of the same age(all P<0.01).The amount of lissamine green staining in the C57BL/6.NOD-Aec1Aec2 mice gradually increased with age, showing elevated scores in 12-week-old,16-week-old and 20-week-old mice in the experiment group(all P<0.01).The central corneal epithelium thicknesses were(20.18±3.75)μm,(17.01 ±5.25) μm,(14.19±5.72) μm and(12.00±3.25) μm in the 8-week-old,12-week-old,16-week-old and 20-week-old C57BL/6.NOD-Aec1Aec2 mice, respectively, which were significantly lower than those of the C57BL/6Jmice of the same age (all P<0.01).The numbers of conjunctival goblet cells were (8.2±2.4),(6.2±2.1),(6.1 ±2.2) and (4.1 ± 2.0) in the 8-week-old,12-week-old,16-week-old and 20-week-old C57 BL/6.NOD-Aec 1Aec2 mice, respectively, showing a gradual decrease with age and a significant decline in comparison with those of the C57BL/6Jmice of the same age(all P<0.01).Lymphocyte infiltration in the lacrimal gland and destruction of gland ducts were seen by hematoxylin-eosin staining, and acinar abnormality aggravated with aging.Reduction of corneal epithelial cells and the number of microvilli were distinguished with aging under the scanning electron microscope. The fasting bloodglucose levels of the two groups were both less than 6.0 mmol/L,and no significant difference was found between them at any age(P=0.637,0.610,0.163,0.086,0.938).Conclusions C57BL/6.NOD-Aec1Aec2 mice develop dry eye spontaneously with aging. The course of disease and characteristics of dry eye in C57BL/6.NOD-Aec1Aec2mice is similar to human dry eye.The C57BL/6NOD-Aec1 Aec2 mouse is the perfect model to study the pathogenesis of dry eye.

Objective To probe the reasons of failure of caged cervical intervertebral fusion and define the indications, operative techniques and short term results of the revision surgery. Methods Twenty-seven cases of caged cervical fusion were revised. The indication for fusion was cervical disc herniation in four cases and cervical spondylotic mylopathy in 23 cases. Of the 27 cases, there were 8 single levels, 15 double levels, 4 three levels. The intervals from revision to primary fusion were 2-25 months, 10.3 months in average. Patients presented discomfort (22 cases) and local pain of neck and shoulder (9 cases) or paralysis (19 cases) preoperatively. JOA grade was mean 11.6 points before revision. Radiographic examination showed the mean lordosis loss was 7.1 mm, the mean interbody height loss was 3.9 mm. 24 patients presented kyphosis. Occluded neighboring cages were found in multilevel cases. Nonunion was founded in 6 cases, unstable in 9 cases, compression still existed in 19 cases. Removal of cages and then decompression, bone grafting and anterior plating fixation were performed in 23 cases (29 cages). 16 patients underwent further posterior fixation. Posterior revisions underwent in another 4 cases (9 cages), including laminectomy and reshaping the lordosis and lateral mass screw plating fixation. Results All the cases were followed-up from 4 to 26 months, 11.7 months in average. The local symptoms released in 81% patients. Nerural deficit symptoms improved in 58% patients. Mean JOA grade was 14.2 points after revision. In 23 cases of anterior approach revisions, 17 cases obtained bone healing within 3 months, while 6 cases got delayed union. The kyphosis was corrected, and the intervertebral height increased 3 mm in average. There were no nerural impaction or failed internal fixation. Conclusion Deficient decompression, sinking of the cage into the cancellous bone of the vertebral body and subsequent kyphosis and bone graft nonunion consist of the main causes for revision surgery. The indications of revision are aggressive neurologic symptom, unstable or deformity of the cervical spine. Cage removal, completely decompression, bone grafting and secure fixation are major steps of revision procedure. In case of more than 3 fusion levels, further posterior fixation is advised.
