2.Nutritional Status of the Elderly Living in Cheongju - II. Anthropometric, Biochdemical and Clinical Assessment.
Korean Journal of Community Nutrition 1997;2(4):568-577
To assess the nutritional and health status of the elderly, anthropometric measurements and blood test for analyzing biochemical indices were carried out from August to September in 1996. Data on the incidence of a specific disease and clinical symptoms were also collected by interviews with a questionnaire. Among the total of 169 free-living elderly interviewed(91 men, 78 women), 86 elderly(57 men, 29 women) participated in the anthropometric measurements, and 73 elderly(52 men, 21 women) in blood tests. Average heights and weights were much lower than the standards established in the Korean Recommended Dietary Allowances. While average triceps skinfold thickness of men and women were above the 50 percentile of the reference data, mid-arm muscle circumferences were lower than the 50 percentile. Prevalences of anemia, assessed by hemoglobin using WHO definition, were 38.5% for men and 33.3% for women. Blood levels of total protein and albumin were above the normal limit for all participants. Mean blood cholesterol levels of men and women were 163.9mg/dl and 185.8mg/dl, and triglyceride levels were 138.2mg/dl and 161.9mg/dl, respectively. Women older than 75 years generally had high levels of BMI, total cholesterol and triglyceride. Health status assessed by clinical symptoms generally showed no significant difference by age, and their smoking, and drinking habits. Males and the elderly who exercised regularly had better health status. It was suggested that exercise was a good way to improve health status.

Chinese Journal of Health Management 2008;2(1):33-35
Objective To evaluate the value of health intervention to changeable risk factors in persons with diabetes prophase. Methods One hundred and eighteen persons in diabetes prophase were divided into two groups randomly. For 58 persons enrolled in the experimental group, health intervention including lectures of diabetes basic knowledge, introducing the necessity and significance of periodical check up and examination, suitable dietary and nutrition, weight control, physical exercise and movement was performed. For 60 persons enrolled in the control group, only the diagnosis of diabetes prophase was informed. The incidence of normalization of blood glucose and progressing to dominant diabetes was compared between the experimental group and the control group after follow-up for 6 months and 12 months. Results After 6 months of intervention, the difference of the number of persons was not significant for normalization of blood glucose between experimental group and control group(x2=0.04 and 0.79,P=0.84 and 0.12 for persons with IFG and IGT respectively),and was also not significant for progressing to dominant diabetes between the two groups(x2=0.96,P=0.33).After 12 months of intervention, the difference of the number of persons was significant for normalization of blood glucose between experimental group and control group(x2=13.34 and 22.58,P<0.01 and<0.01 for persons with IFG and IGT respectively),but still not significant for progressing to dominant diabetes between the two groups(x2=2.83,P=0.09).Conclusions The intervention to changeable risk factors can prevent or delay the occurrence of diabetes mellitus, and improve the quality of life for person with diabetes prophase.

OBJECTIVE To establish the fingerprint of Gegenqinlian tablets and determine the content of eleven components(3’-hydroxy puerarin, puerarin, 3’-methoxy puerarin, daidzin, baicalin, palmatine hydrochloride, berberine hydrochloride, scutellarin, baicalein, ammonium glycyrrhizinate and wogonin) by quantitative analysis of multi-components by single-marker(QAMS).METHODS Ten batches of Gegenqinlian tablets were determined by HPLC and a common fingerprint was established. Baicalin was selected as internal reference. The relative correction factors of the component with 3’-hydroxy puerarin, puerarin, 3’-methoxy puerarin, daidzin, palmatine hydrochloride, berberine hydrochloride, scutellarin, baicalein, ammonium glycyrrhizinate and wogonin were calculated and their contents were calculated. The feasibility and scientificity of QAMS was evaluated by comparison on the results between the measured value and calculation value by external standard method and QAMS. The chromatographic separation was performed on ananalytical column of Waters Xbridge-C18(250 mm× 4.6 mm, 5 μm) with gradient elution, the mobile phase was acetonitrile 0.1% phosphoric acid aqueous solution, at a flow rate of 1.0 mL·min-1. The column temperature was 30 ℃ and the detection wavelength was 260 nm.RESULTS There were 20 peaks in 10 batches of Gegenqinlian tablets and 11 chemical constituents were identified. The similarity of 10 batches of Gegenqinlian tablets was >0.97. The linear range of 3’-hydroxy puerarin, puerarin, 3’-methoxy puerarin, daidzin, baicalin, palmatine hydrochloride, berberine hydrochloride, scutellarin, baicalein, ammonium glycyrrhizinate and wogonin were 0.056 6-2.830 2, 0.241 2-12.058 6, 0.128 0-6.401 0, 0.059 7-2.983 5, 0.242 7-12.134 9, 0.045 7-2.285 7, 0.192 8-9.641 0, 0.043 3-2.167 0, 0.018 0-0.900 2, 0.021 0-1.048 4, 0.011 5-0.575 4 μg (r2= 0.999 6-1.000) respectively. The average recovery were 100.23%, 102.01%, 101.66%, 102.73%, 100.17%, 98.45%, 98.41%, 100.95%, 101.85%, 97.97%, 100.09%(RSD=1.24%-2.57%, n=6) respectively. The relative correction factors of 3’-hydroxy puerarin, puerarin, 3’-methoxy puerarin, daidzin, palmatine hydrochloride, berberine hydrochloride, scutellarin, baicalein, ammonium glycyrrhizinate and wogonin were 0.860 4, 0.605 3, 0.850 9, 0.582 8, 0.557 1, 0.498 6, 0.767 2, 0.652 1, 2.608 1, 0.545 2 respectively. RAD between QAMS method and external standard method were 0.03%-2.12%. CONCLUSION The combination of QAMS and fingerprint can provide reference for the quantitative determination and quality control of Gegenqinlian tablets.
5.Effects of an Opiate Receptor Antagonist Naloxone on Endotoxic Shock and Tumorigenesis.

Korean Journal of Immunology 1997;19(1):91-106
Septic shock is one of the leading cause of death in hospitalized patients and mortality rates of up to 50 % have been reported. Despite all efforts, no regimen today seems to be successful in the treatment of septic shock. The endogenous opioid system (EOS) includes three major families of peptides: dynorphins, endorphins and enkephalins. Several lines of evidence indicate that EOS is implicated in the pathophysiology of anaphylactic and endotoxic shock. An opioid receptor blocker naloxone has been used extensively in studies for the role of EOS or endogenous opiod peptides (EOP). However, there have been few, if any, detailed investigative studies regarding the effect of naloxone on TNF-a production and the lethality in response to endotoxin, and tumorigenesis. ...continue...

Korean Journal of Pathology 1999;33(9):745-750
Symptomatic parasellar granular cell tumor is a very rare tumor. To the best of our knowledge, 43 cases was be found in the English literatures. We recently experienced a case of a parasellar granular cell tumor in a 61-year-old female who had bilateral temporal hemianopsia and severe panhypopituitarism. The tumor was composed of diffuse sheets of polygonal cells with abundant eosinophilic PAS positive granular cytoplasm. In the immunohistochemical and ultrastructural examinations, the tumor failed to show any evidence of Schwann cell or glial differentiation. These findings suggest that granular cell tumor has heterogenous cell types of origin.
