OBJECTIVETo describe and analyze epidemiological characteristics of babies with neural tube defects (NTD) by sex and birth outcome in a high-prevalence and a low-prevalence areas of China.
METHODSBirth defects surveillance data collected from 1992 through 1994, as a part of the Sino-American cooperative project on NTD prevention, were used to classify NTD as four categories, i.e., anencephaly, encephalocele, high-level and low-level spina bifida according to the sites of lesion (high vs. low level lesion were cervicothoracic and lumbosacral, respectively). Each category was sub-classified, according to single or compound defect, as isolated external defects (including those with NTD only) or multiple external defects (including those with NTD and another major external birth defects that is not the sequence of a defect such as cleft lip with or without cleft palate). The rates of anencephalus, encephalocele, high- and low-level spina bifida (SB) in males and females and their sex ratios were calculated, adjusted for urban and rural areas, season, category and birth outcome by sex and sites of lesions (high vs. low).
RESULTSTotally, 784 NTD cases were identified from 326 874 recorded births (including live births, stillbirths and fetal deaths with a gestation age of at least 20 weeks). The prevalence rates of anencephalus (1.30 per 1 000 female births) and high-level SB (3.99) in females were higher than those (0.66 and 1.66 per 1 000 male births) in males in the high-prevalence northern regions; with adjusted prevalence rates of females 1.8 - 2.1 times greater than those of males. In the low-prevalence southern regions, the prevalence of high- (0.32 per 1 000 female births) and low-level SB (0.21) in female were higher than those in males, with high- and low-level SB rate of 0.10 and 0.09 per 1 000 male births), with adjusted rates for females of 1.3 - 1.6 times higher than in males. Isolated NTD accounted for more than 80% of all NTD cases, and the prevalence of isolated NTD in females (2.57) was higher than that in males (1.40).
CONCLUSIONSThe sex differences in NTD existed between north and south, in accordance with the phenotype of NTD. It suggested that proportion of high level SB and anencephalus in females could increase as the prevalence of NTD going up, anencephaly, high- and low-level SB had the different genetic and environmental background.

OBJECTIVETo investigate the efficacy of the Chinese medicine Huzhangdanshenyin on male immune infertility, and provide an effective therapy for this disease.
METHODSNinety men with immune infertility were selected as the research subjects and randomly divided into two groups, 60 in the treatment group, treated by Huzhangdanshenyin, and the other 30 in the control, treated by prednisone, both for 3 months. The improvement of clinical symptoms, immunologic indexes (antisperm antibodies in serum and seminal plasma) and sperm indexes (semen liquefied duration, motility, viability, density and abnormal morphology rate) were observed and the results analyzed.
RESULTSThe total antisperm antibody reversing ratio of the treatment group was higher than that of the control (P < 0.01), especially the serum antisperm antibody reversing ratio. There were significant differences in the clinical cure rate and total validity rate between the treatment group and the control (P < 0.01). After the treatment, the markers of the clinical symptoms (P < 0.01), especially the serum antisperm antibody reversing ratio. There were significant differences in the clinical cure rate and total validity rate between the treatment group and the control (P < 0.01). After the treatment, the markers of the clinical symptoms were lower (P < 0.01), and the improvement of the clinical symptoms was better in the treatment group than in the control (P < 0.01), especially the symptoms of pain in the back and knees, distending and bearing-down sensation of the perineum and testis, hypersexuality and topalgias. Compared with pre-treatment, sperm motility and viability of the treatment group significantly improved (P < 0.01), and so did sperm density (P < 0.05). However, there were no significant differences in sperm density, semen liquefied duration, abnormal morphology rate and pH (P > 0.05) before and after the treatment.
CONCLUSIONThe Chinese medicine Huzhangdanshenyin works more effectively than prednisone in the treatment of male immune infertility. It could improve the antisperm antibody reversing ratio, clinical symptoms and signs and ameliorate sperm indexes with no obvious advierse effects.

Objective To investigate the clinical manifestations, diagnosis and treatment of primary intracranial tumors of multiple cellular origins. Methods The clinical data including the clinical manifestations, imaging findings, and treatment of 8 patients with primary intracranial tumors of multiple cellular origins were retrospectively analyzed, and the possible mechanism of these tumors were explored. Results A total of 16 primary intraeranial tumors were found in the 8 patients, including intraeranial meningioma (8 tumors), pituitary adenoma (3 tumors), schwannoma (2 tumors), and glioma (2 tumors). The tumors were resected in a single operation in 5 cases, and in two surgical sessions in 3 cases. Twelve tumors were radically resected, 3 were subtotally resected, and 1 was partially resected. Conclusion MR is an important diagnostic modality for primary intraeranial tumors of multiple cellular origins. Tumor resection in one or staged operations combined with radiotherapy or chemotherapy is the primary treatment option for these tumors.

CTN-1 is one of the rabies vaccine strains for human use in China, but there has been no report on the full-length gene sequence of CTN-1. In this study, the full-length gene of CTN-1 was amplified by RT-PCR, each PCR product was cloned into T vector and then sequenced, assemblied and compared with other vaccine strains as well as the wild Chinese rabies isolates. The phylogenetic tree of G gene was constructed and the genetic homology was analyzed. The results revealed that CTN-1 was 11 925nt (GenBank accession number: FJ959397)in length and belonged to the genotype I. The full-length nucleotide homologies among CTN-1 and other rabies virus strains were between 81.5%-93.4%, of which the lowest 81.5% was between CTN-1 strain and bat isolate SHBRV, and the highest 93.4% was between CTN-1 and Chinese isolate HN10. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that the majority of Chinese isolates could be grouped into the same clade with the CTN-1 strain, but aG and some vaccine strains from abroad such as Flury, PM, PV, ERA, RC-HL and a few Chinese strains were grouped in another clade. Comparsion of the G protein genes also showed that the homologies among CTN-1 and most of the Chinese isolates were higher than that of the other vaccine strains to those Chinese strains. Therefore, it suggests that the CTN-1 strain is more suitable and rational to be used for the production of rabies inactivated vaccine in China than the others.

Objective To explore whether baseline body composition and other clinical factors are associated with incomplete immune response after highly active antiretroviral therapy(HAART)in Chinese men with human immunodeficiency virus(HIV)or acquired immunodeficiency syndrome(AIDS).Methods A retrospective study was conducted among HIV/AIDS male patients who achieved viral suppression(maintained HIV-1 RNA levels<400 copies/ml)after a year of HAART between 2007 and 2015.Clinical,immunological,and virological data were collected from patients' files, including weight, height, and whole body composition measured within one month prior to staring HAART.Body mass index(BMI),lean mass index(LMI),fat mass index(FMI),and body bone mineral content/height were adjusted by height.According to whether the patients experienced incomplete immune responses(CD4 cell count<350 cells/μl)after a year of HAART,the patients were divided into two groups:the complete immune response(CD4 cell count≥350 cells/μl)and the incomplete immune response(CD4 cell count<350 cells/μl),respectively.Student's t test,chi-square test, and Wilcoxon rank test were used to assess differences between these two groups.Multiple Logistic regression analysis was used to assess factors associated with an incomplete immune response in patients with sustained viral suppression. Results Totally 84 HIV/AIDS male patients with viral suppression were included in this study. There were statistical differences between these two groups in terms of age(Z=-2.479,P=0.013),baseline BMI(t=2.030,P=0.045),LMI(t=2.200,P=0.029),and CD4 cell count(Z=6.416,P=0.000).However,there was no statistical differences in viral load,FMI,body bone mineral content/height,HAART duration, and HAART regimen(all P>0.05).BMI[OR=0.742,95% confidence interval(CI)=0.554-0.993,P=0.044],LMI(OR=0.459,95% CI=0.249-0.844,P=0.012),HAART duration(OR=10.161,95% CI=1.110-93.052,P=0.040),baseline CD4 cell count(OR=80.051,95% CI=8.396-762.563,P=0.000)were significantly associated with incomplete immune response.Age(OR=1.497,95% CI=0.213-10.505,P=0.685),viral load(OR=0.333,95% CI=0.071-1.572,P=0.164),FMI(OR=0.797,95% CI=0.546-1.164,P=0.240),body bone mineral content/height(OR=1.145,95% CI=0.037-35.676,P=0.938)and HAART regimen(OR=0.430,95% CI=0.159-1.159,P=0.095)were not associated with incomplete immune response. Conclusions Baseline CD4 cell count and HAART duration may affect immune response.Patients with higher baseline BMI or higher LMI may be less likely to develop incomplete immune response.Baseline FMI and body bone mineral content/height ratio are not associated with incomplete immune response.
