OBJECTIVEThe purpose of this survey was to assess dental knowledge and behaviors of the teachers and mothers of school children.

METHODSAll data was collected from 1365 mothers of first grade students and 215 schoolteachers in Yichang, Hubei by using questionnaires and, analyzed using SPSS software.

RESULTSThe level of dental knowledge was higher among schoolteachers than among mothers; the mothers were mostly informed through television/book (62.4%/51.5%), while teachers received information from various sources, including the dentists (75.3%). Most of the children (94.0%) didn't have practical support from their parents in daily tooth cleaning. Only 18.9% of them visited the dentist at least once per year.

CONCLUSIONThis finding suggested that we should emphasize oral healthy education among mothers and schoolteachers, in order to promote school-based oral health education program.

Objective:To assess the periodontal diseases as a possible risk factor for preterm and low birth weight. Methods: A population-based, cross-sectional study was carried out in Hubei. The samples were chosen randomly by the rule of admittance. Socio-demographic information relating to health and maternal habits was collected through a questionnaire. The clinical parameters were debris index-simplified (DI-S), sulcus bleeding index (SBI), probing pocket depth (PD) and clinical attachment loss (CAJ). The birth time and weight were recorded. The result was analyzed with chi-square test and logistic regression analysis.Results: The incidence of preterm low birth weight was 12.3%. The gingivitis and periodontitis were diagnosed in 86.6% and 64.2% of preterm low birth weight cases. The odds ratio of having gingivitis and preterm low birth weight was 1.30(95%confidence interval: 0.53-3.22). The odds ratio of having periodontitis and preterm low birth weight was 2.69(95%confidence interval: 1.37-5.27). Conclusion: The periodontal diseases of pregnancy can be regarded as an important risk factor for preterm low birth weight.

Serum adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (A-FABP) was raised in metabolic syndrome (MS)patients (n= 121) as compared with age-matched healthy subjects [n = 120, (14.7±4.8 vs 6.8 ±3. 0) μg/L,P<0.001]. It reached higher level in MS subjects with visceral obesity [(15.7±4.2 vs 12.6±5.1) μg/L, P<0.001]. Serum A-FABP concentration was positively correlated with body mass index, waist circumference, waist-tohip ratio, fasting insulin, homeostasis assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), fasting glucose, triglycerides,total cholesterol,and mean arterial blood pressure, whereas negatively correlated with HDL-C (r =-0. 448, P< 0.001).

Objective To investigate the mechanism of interlekin-6 (IL-6) in wound healing of human biliary epithelial cells ( BECs ).Methods BECs were cultured in IL-6 at different concentrations:0 ng/L(0 ng/L group),10 ng/L (10 ng/L group),50 ng/L (50 ng/L group),100 ng/L (100 ng/L group),1000 ng/L ( 1000 ng/L group).The effects of IL-6 on the phosphorylation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3( STAT3 ) and the expression of trefoil family factors 3 (TFF3) were detected.BECs were divided into untreated group,STAT3-RNAi group (BECs transfected with STAT3 RNAi adenovirus) and Control-RNAi group (BECs transfected with vacant RNAi adenovirus).The effects of IL-6 on the expression of TFF3 were detected after RNAi of STAT3.In vitro wound models were constructed for the untreated group,STAT3-RNAi group and Control-RNAi group,and the effects of IL-6 and TFF3 on BECs of the 3 groups were detected.All data were analyzed by using the Student's t test,analysis of variance or Sidak test.Results The expressions of phosphorylated STAT3 in the 50 ng/L group,100 ng/L group and 1000 ng/L group were 0.240 ± 0.052,0.714 ± 0.124,0.327 ± 0.069,respectively,which were significantly higher than 0.033 ± 0.011 of the 0 ng/L group (q =5.246,17.260,7.451,P ＜ 0.05 ).The contents of mRNA and protein of TFF3 increased as the increase of IL-6 concentration (q =12.045,9.889,P ＜ 0.05).After RNAi of STAT3 of the BECs,the expression of TFF3 decreased when the concentration of IL-6 was 1000 ng/L.The expression of TFF3 of the STAT3-RNAi group was 0.037 ± 0.005,which was significantly lower than 0.267 ± 0.038 of the Control-RNAi group and 0.301 ± 0.042 in the untreated group ( q =12.135,13.929,P ＜ 0.05 ).In the in vitro wound model,the speed of BECs migration in the STAT3-RNAi group was (9.1 ± 1.5 ) μm/h,which was slower than (25.1 ± 3.8 ) μm/h of the Control-RNAi group after 12 hours of interference with IL-6 (q =7.737,P ＜ 0.05 ).The speed of BECs migration of STAT3-RNAi group was (39.2 ± 4.7) μm/h after adding 1 g/L of recombinant TFF,which was significantly faster than that of the Control-RNAi group (q =14.507,P ＜0.05).Conclusion IL-6 promotes cell migration and wound healing by activating STAT3 and up-regulating TFF3 expression.

Objective To explore the mechanism that gold nanorods trigger apoptosis in cancer cells.Methods Gold nanorods was synthesized by gold seed growing method, and its characterization was detected; gold nanorods on cell proliferation-toxicity were evaluated by CCK-8 Kit and apoptosis were detected by flow; mitochondrial membrane potential were tested by JC-1 and activation of Caspase 9 and Caspase 3 were detected by western blot. Results The results found that gold nanorods had nontoxic to normal cells, but highly toxic to tumor cells; and with the increasing of gold nanorods’ working time, the percentage of apoptotic cancer cells was increasing; in addition to, normal cells’ mitochondrial membrane potential did not change, but cancer cells had a significant reduction in mitochondrial membrane potential.Conclusion This study proves that gold nanorods induce apoptosis through the mitochondrial apoptosis pathway.

The 125 strains of the symbiotic and epiphyte microorganisms were isolated from marine organisms (Sea cucumber, Sea urchin, Sea anemone, Sea actinia, Ulra, Sargassum, Undaria). Among them,21 strains of bacteria,8 strains of actinomycetes and 2 strains of fungi have shown to have antagonistic activity on bacterial or fungal growth. In the 21 strains of bacteria, 7 strains belong to Bacillus sp., 11 strains belong to Vibro sp., and 3 strains belong to Pseudomonas sp.. In the 8 strains of actinomycetes, 5 strains belong to Streptomyces sp., 3 strains belong to Micromonospora sp.. 2 strains of fungi belong to Penicillum sp..

Comparative analysis of characteristic of species and esterase-isoenzyme of isolates of Polyporus umbel-latus from different regions were processed. The results indicated that isolates of Jizhaoling ( Z) and Zhushiling (ZJ) have significant differences in characteristic, and enzymatic band types of the two species also have significant differences. The homology at genetics between the two isolates is 0% , and consanguinity between the two i-solates is the farthest.
