The Korean Journal of Parasitology 2005;43(3):115-117
The Kato-Katz (KK) method is a well-known method of fecal examination for helminthiases. Its diagnostic sensitivity was found very high for clonorchiasis. The present study evaluated the correlation of Clonorchis sinensis egg counts by the KK method with those by direct smear and formalin-ether (FE) technique. The egg counts obtained by the KK method (Y) were correlated with the counts by direct smear (X) with the equation of Y = 659.4 + 0.266X (r2= 0.738), but not with those by the FE method. The present study demonstrated that the KK method and direct smear were useful for both qualitative and quantitative diagnosis of clonorchiasis, especially in the field.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1977;15(1):81-87
Marjolin is ulcer may be defined briefly as a cancer arising in a bum scar. A 41-year-old female had a Marjolin is ulcer(12x10x3cm) on her right lower leg. This ulcerated tumor has been present for two and half months and the induction period sinnc her bum was 29 years. The pathologic diagn.osis was squamous cell carcinoma, grade 2. Roentgenograms of her right lower leg revealed several soft tissue masses densities which, in part, horizontally connected with the periosteum of the tibia. So she was treated by above-knee amputation with dissection of several, unenlarged inguinal nodes which showed no evidence of metastases. She developed large, single, fixed metastatic node in right inguinal area one month after amputation and dissection was done.

Journal of Korean Society of Spine Surgery 1998;5(1):116-121
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective analysis of the patients who had cauda equina syndrome caused by a herniated lumbar disc. OBJECTIVES: To assess the clinical debates concerning the diagnosis, treatment, and results of treatment. SUMMARY OF LITERATURE REVIEW: This syndrome has been considered as an absolute indication of surgical treatment in the herniated lumbar disc and poor prognosis after surgery were reported. Although there are debates on the timing of surgery, early recognition early surgical treatment are recommended for a better results of treatment. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 23 consecutive patients having a cauda equina syndrome caused by herniated lumbar disc were reviewed retrospectively. They were 14 males and 9 females having ages of 41.6 in average. The incidence of this syndrome was 3.8% of the patients who had surgical treatment of herniated lumbar disc. RESULTS: All patients had bladder dysfunction in addition to the low back pain and radicular pain in the leg, but five patient did not recognize their urinary retention which were shaded by severe leg pain. A surgical treatment were performed for all patients at 6.8 days in average after onset of the bladder dysfunction. At follow-up of 3 years and 3 months in average after surgery, 20 patients(86.9%) had satisfactory resolution of the low back pain and leg pain, and all patients had complete recovery of motor weakness except one patients who had residual foot drop. Bladder function recovered satisfactorily in 18 patients (78.3%), but 4 patients had some difficulty of urination and one patient needed a sphinterotomy for urination. CONCLUSIONS: The cauda equine syndrome in herniated lumbar disc was often not recognized early and a poor result of treatment was not rare, particularly in the patients who had acute onset and severe bladder dysfunction. So, early diagnosis and active surgical treatment are recommended for a better results of treatment.

7.Specificity of Dopamine-2 Receptor Agonist on Eyeball Growth in Chicken Model of Myopia.
Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1995;36(6):954-959
The authors examined the specificity of the dopamine-2 receptor for eyeball growth of the experimental myopic chicken eyes. Two day-old white Leghorn chickens were monocularly deprived of vision by lid suture of the right eyes. We measured the axial lengths of chicken's eyes by ultrasonography at the 2nd day and the 4th weeks. The right eyes of the first group were instillated with 0.04cc of tris buffer solution, those of the second and third group were instillated with 0.04cc of 0.02% SKF38393 hydrochloride solution and 0.02% bromocriptine solution individually. All solutions were instillated into the right eyes two times per day during 4 weeks. At the 2nd day of the age, the axial lengths of the first group's eyeballs were 7.83 +/- 0.14mm in the right, 7.87 +/- 0.15mm in the left eyes, 7.78 +/- 0.16mm in the right eyes, 7.77 +/- 0.11mm in the left eyes of the second group and 7.89 +/- 0.12mm in the right eyes, 7.87 +/- 0.12mm in the left eyes of the third group. Each group was not statistically different (p>0.05). But at the four weeks of the age, the axial lengths of the lid sutured right chicken eyeball were 11.39 +/- 0.27mm in the first group, 11.40 +/- 0.40mm in the second group and 11.20 +/- 0.40mm in the third group, The third group was statistically different from the first or 2nd group (p<0.05). The growth of the axial lengths of the right chicken eyeballs from the 2nd day to the 4th week of the age was 3.50 +/- 0.35mm in the first, 3.63 +/- 0.42mm in the second and 3.21 +/- 0.29mm in the third group. The right eyes of the third group were found significantly less growth than those of other groups. These results suggest that dopamine-2 receptor playa role in eyeball growth.

8.Recognition and Repair of the Slipped Muscle.
Journal of the Korean Ophthalmological Society 1995;36(3):510-515
Eight consecutive case of the slipped muscle are recognized and treated with the surgical intervention. All patients showed a large-angle exotropia(30 - 70 prism diopter), moderative to severe degree of limitation of adduction(-1.5 - -3) and negative forced duction test. Intraoperatively, we could identify the empty muscle capsule attached to the sclera with the tendon slipped posteriorly within its capsule. Repair is accomplished by resecting the empty capsule and advancing the true tendon to or toward the original insertion. After the average follow up period of 36.1 weeks, the amount of reduced within 10 prism diopters and limitation of duction within-0.5 in all patients. A better understanding of the pathology may lead to early diagnosis and surgical repair, and then the prognosis for functional and cosmetic result will be excellent.

9.Experimental study on the effect of cortisone in mice infected with Toxocara canis: Histopathological findings of granuloma in the liver.
The Korean Journal of Parasitology 1974;12(2):126-134
The present study was carried out to examine the effect of "Cortisone" on the worm burden migrated in the organs, and granulomatous change in the liver of mice infected with Toxocara canis eggs. Daily does of 0.5 mg "Cortisone" was administrated subcutaneously to Toxocara-infected mice with different schedule. The results are summarized as follows: More number of Toxocara larvae migrated into the muscle tissue, especially into the carcass through the wall of the large intestine and higher distribution rate and longer persistence of worms were also recognized in the carcass of the experimental group than in the control. Cortisone administration resulted the inhibition of granuloma formation, as well as the resolution of granuloma in the liver. However, the discontinuation of the administration induced the reccurence of heavier grade of inflammation. In non-cortisone treated group (control), cellular infiltration appeared around the worms in the liver on the 10th day of the infection, and typical granulomatosis was followed on the 20th day. As in above results, it is considered cortisone has remarkable anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects in mice infected with T.canis, but histopathological changes on the granuloma formation might be related closely with the duration of Toxocara infection, dosage, duration and timing of cortisone administration.

10.Structural Relationship of Burnout and Related Variables among Family Caregivers of Cancer Patients.
Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing 2013;43(6):812-820
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to construct a structural equational model to explain and predict burnout in family caregivers of patients with cancer. The study was based on the Stress-Appraisal-Coping Model of Lazarus and Folkman (1984) and Family Stress Theory (Hill, 1958). METHODS: Data were collected from July 10 to September 30, 2012 through direct interviews and a self-report questionnaire survey. Participants in this study were 206 family caregivers providing care for patients with cancer in In-patient or Out-patient departments of three different general hospitals located in Busan. Measured variables were exogenous variables (social support and perceived health status) and endogenous variables (perceived stress, hope and burnout). RESULTS: Goodness of fit in the hypothetical model was chi2=174.07, TLI=.95, CFI=.97, RMSEA=.08. Perceived health status, perceived stress, and hope showed statistically significant direct effects on burnout of family caregivers. Social support affected burnout of family caregivers indirectly. These variables explained 68.5% of total variance in burnout. CONCLUSION: The results from this study suggest that perceived stress, perceived health status, and hope should be considered as major influential factors when developing nursing interventions to control burnout of family caregivers (of patients with cancer).
