Eight bacterial strains were examined whether they have phoP/phoQ genes which were known to be involved in the intracellular survival of Salmonella typhimurium. The phoP/phoQ operon were known to sense the stimuli of the genes involved in the adaptation of the environment. Using 514-basepairs EcoRV DNA fragment of phoP region of Salmonella typhimurium as a probe, dot blot hybridization were performed. Chromosomal DNAs of Klebsiella pneumonia, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Serratia marscescens, Enterobacter cloacae, Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli, Shigella dysenteriae, and Listeria monocytogenes were examined by DNA hybridization assay. Against our expectation, intracellular pathogen, L. monocytogenes, did not have similar DNA sequences to phoP/phoQ of S. typhimurium, while E, coli, S. dysenteriae, and E. cloacae showed the positive signal even though they were not intracellular pathogens. This result suggested that the phoP/phoQ operon was absent in intracellular pathogenic bacterias other than S. typhimurium. Rather it was found in phylogenetically closer bacterias to S. typhimurium, which were not able to survive in intracellular environment. Some different mechanism, which is not dependent on phoP/phoQ operon, could be involved in the intracellular survival of L. monocytogenes.

Serial Brain MRI was performed on a seventeen-year-old girl with Kearns-Sayre syndrome. At the age of 11, she complained bilateral ptosis. Two years later, bilateral blepharoplasty was done and brain MRI was taken. T2-weighted MRI sequence showed high signal intensity areas in the brainstem, thalamus and white matter of the cerebrum and cerebellum bilaterally. Four years later, chronic progressive external ophthalmoplegia developed and serial MRI and proton MRS were taken. Follow-up MRI showed similar but slightly progressed findings compared with previous films. The proton MR spectroscopic imaging demonstrated focal localization of abnormally increased lactate content in the involved area of the brain.

PURPOSE: Primary pulmonary lymphoma(PPL) arising in the lung as the initial site is very rare. Authors experienced two cases of PPL and report the radiologic findings and clinical characteristics with a brief reviewof the literature. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Plain chest radiograph and enhanced axial CT scan of the chest were taken. We analyzed radiologic findings of the two cases and correlated with broncoscopic and pathologic findings. RESULTS: Plain chest radiograph showed a mass like consolidative lesion on RML without peripheral atelectasis. Chest CT scan revealed a mass like consolidation with airbronchogram and the absence of a hilar mass or thoracic adenopathy. Percutaneous needle aspiration and biopsy(PCNA and PCNB) of the RML mass confirmed B-cell lymphoma, in both cases. CONCLUSION: PPL must be included in the differential diagnosis of chronic alveolar consolidation such as bronchioloalveolar cell carcinoma.

Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia(ALHE) is an uncommon disorder manifested as solitary or multiple nodules mainly in the dermis and subcutaneous tissue of head and neck region. Histological characteristics of ALHE is proliferation of endothelial cells in the small to medium sized vessels and infiltration of lymphocytes, plasma cells and eosinophils. ALHE affecting the tongue is very rare. We report a case of ALHE of the tongue in an 56 year old man with the review of literatures.

A 35-years-old man was hospitalized with gene-ralized edema. 6 months ago, the patient was operated by radical subtotal gastrectomy for advanced gastric adenocarcinoma. The patient presented with multiple liver metastasis and the massive proteinuria. The patients renal biopsy revealed minimal change nephrotic syndrome and treated with prednisolone and diuretics. The patient was improved clinical symptome and decreased 24 hours urine protein. In literature reviewed, gastric carcinoma was not associated with minimal change nephrotic syndrome. We experienced advanced gastric carcinoma associated with minimal change nephrotic syndrome, thus we report it.

Journal of the Korean Geriatrics Society 2013;17(2):95-98
Here, we report a case of newly diagnosed diabetes, with concurrent pancreatic cancer manifested as hyperglycemic crisis, and aggravated by urinary tract infection. We summarize the initial clinical manifestations and pertinent laboratory, radiologic, and clinical findings in an elderly patient with hyperglycemic emergency. A review of the documents involving pancreatic tumors and hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state, which is an acute complication of diabetes mellitus, is presented. In the absence of other identifiable conditions, it is reasonable to speculate that some factor (or factors) produced by the tumor had a role in the metabolic decompensation. In addition, this discussion should be more carefully considered in the aged people group.

Although both medical and surgical approaches have been investigated, recurrent symblepharon due to chronic ocular surface inflammation is a difficult disease to manage. This condition can also result in many complications such as cosmetic and visual deteriorations. In this condition, we can use the amniotic membrane transplantation that has a biological contact inhibition effect for the prevention of recurrent symblepharon. We treated successfully a case of a progressive symblepharon involving central cornea from 2-year old. The 14 year-old male patient had suffered from serious cosmetic problem and undergone multiple dissection, argon laser photocoagulation, using cyclosporin eyedrops. He was treated using allograft amniotic membrane, autograft limbal-conjunctiva, and buccal mucosa transplantation. we think that amniotic membrane transplantation was very effective method for the prevention of recurrent symblepharon.
