Korean Journal of Physical Anthropology 1994;7(2):157-162
The changes in the size of human oviduct and ovary after immersion in formalin (4%, 10%) were investigated. The results were as follows : 1. After fixation, the length of oviduct was significantly reduced to 93%, but the cross sectional area of oviduct was significantly increased. The length of oviduct showed no significant difference between 4% and 10% formalin. The length of ovarian ligament was also significantly reduced to 84% after fixation. 2. After fixation, the volume of oviduct was increased significantly and showed a difference between the two fixatives. The volume of oviduct in 4% formalin has increased to 107%, as compared to 103% increase in 10% formalin. 3. After fixation, the volume of ovary was increased significantly and showed a difference between the two fixatives. The volume of ovary in 4% formalin has increased to 109%, as compared to 103% increase in 10% formalin.

Journal of Korean Society of Endocrinology 1996;11(1):75-84
Background: Fluvastatin is the first entirely synthetic 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A(HMG-CoA) reductase inhibitor. Clinical data indicate that this agent exhibits the proven efficacy of its class and also has some theoretical advantages in safety for long-term use because of its unique pharmacololgic property consistent with hepatoselectivity(i.e., low systemic exposure). This study is to evaluate efficacy and safety of fluvastatin in hypercholesterolemic patients in Korea. Methods: An open clinical trial with fluvastatin was conducted in 31 subjects who continued to have high blood cholesterol levels of 6.21 mmol/L(240 mg/dl) or greater after 1 month of lipid-lowering diet plus single blind placebo period. Fluvastatin was administered for 8 weeks with the initial dose of 20 mg per day and if serum cholesterol levels did not fall below 5.20 mmol/L(200 mg/dl) after 4 weeks the dose was increased to 40 mg per day for the second 4 weeks. On each visit every 4 weeks they underwent interview and laboratory tests about side effects and tolerability. Results: The mean % changes in plasma total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol from baseline were

A rare case in the pattern of the origin of the celiac artery was observed in the cadaver of a 64 year old Korean male and the results are summarized as follows. The superior mesenteric artery originated from the abdominal aorta at the level of the intervertebral dusk between first and second lumbar vertebra. At a point 4cm from the origin of the superior mesenteric arterr, a common trunk appeared and ran 1cm and then divided into the common hepatic artery and the splenic artery. The common hepatic artery divided into the right gastric artery and the proper hepatic artery at a point 4.5cm after the bifurcation. A common trunk formed by the left inferior phrenic artery and the lefts gastric artery arose from the abdominal aorta about 0.8cm about the origin of the celiacomesenteric trunk.

Korean Journal of Urology 1997;38(2):167-172
PURPOSES: Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) for symptomatic benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) remains a gold standard for surgical treatment, but significant morbidities are associated with the procedure. Transurethral electro-vaporization of prostate (TVP) using a grooved ball electrode, a modification of standard TURP, was tried on bladder outlet obstruction in an attempt to reduce the morbidity rate of TURP. We compared between the TVP and standard TURP to estimate the efficacy and safety. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A comparative trial of 44 patients with symptomatic BPH from May 1995 to December 1995 was performed. Of the patients 20 were received operation with TVP (Group I) and 24 were received with standard TURP (Group II). Patients were assessed at baseline for both safety and efficacy and in follow-up at 1 and 3 months. Efficacy parameters evaluated included American Urological Association (AUA) symptom score, peak urine flow (Qmax) and postvoid residual urine (ml). Safety parameters evaluated included incidence of side effects, operative time (in minutes), postoperative catheterization time, change in hematocrit and serum sodium. RESULTS: The mean age of each group was 63.7+-6.4 years (Group I) and 68.8+-7.6 years (Group II), the prostate size was 32.4+-3.4g and 34.5+-6.5g. The mean operation time was shorter in Group I (56+-11min) than Group II (85+-34min), (P<0.05). The change of Hematocrit(ml/dl) was lower in group I (from 41.1+-5.0 to 39.5+-4.2) than group II (from 39.6+-4.4 to 35.2+-5.5), (P<0.05). The mean catheterization time was 3.3+-1.3 days and 4.8+-1.7 days, (P<0.05). change of maximal flow rate, post-void residual volume and AUA symptom score was not significantly different between each group. The incidence of postoperative complications were not significantly different between each group. CONCLUSIONS: Although the TURP is the gold standard for the treatment of symptomatic BPH with high success rate, but significant morbidities rate are associated with this procedure. So, TVP is new and potentially useful modification of TURP. In this preliminary study, there has been significant clinical improvement maintained with minimal morbidity. This early clinical experience highlights several potential advantages of TVP, including rapid convalescence time, short hospital day, and minimal blood loss. So, TVP is one of the various therapeutic alternatives for BPH lowering the morbidity rate of standard TURP.
