4.Demographic Characteristics of Cadaver Donors: One Hundred Ten Cadaver Donors at Chonbuk National University Medical School.

Since the beginning of anatomy education in Korea, the supply of cadavers was dependent on the dead of non-identified vagabonds, mainly. Recently, the body donation program was introduced, and it has been operating and managing. However, the management agencies of this program are numerous, medical colleges and organizations of society. Thus it is very difficult to find the demographic characteristics and the statistical data of cadaver donors. The purpose of this study is to compare the demographic characteristics such as the number of death, sex, age, the place of residence, causes of death and others between death in Jeollabuk-do of annual report of death statistics (National Statistical Office) and 110 cadaver donors at Chonbuk National University Medical School in 2000~2004. Numbers of the donated cadaver increased 1.9% from 15 donors in 2000 to 29 donors in 2004. The dead were 69,447 persons in Jeollabuk-do for 5 years (in 2000~2004), and 110 cadaver donors, 0.16% of death in Jeollabuk-do, were donated to Chonbuk National University Medical School at this times. There was a ratio of 57.3% male to 42.7% female in cadaver donors. The age of donors was sixties 26.4%, seventies 25.4% and forties 14.5%. The regional proportion of donors was highest in Jeonju city among 14 regions. The death causes of donors were the neoplasms with 35.5%, the diseases of the circulatory system with 12.7%, it was similar to the statistical result of the dead in Jeollabuk-do. The death place of donors was the highest in hospital. The christian of cadaver donors was 60%. The registrant of Chonbuk Council of Body Donors and some other organizations was 48.2% among the cadaver donors. These results may contribute to the supply of cadavers for the anatomical education and research as well as the proliferation of cadaver donation movement. We hope that the studies of the demographic characteristics to body donation will be continued with medical colleges in Korea.

5.The Effect of Education Program of Cadaver Dissection for the Paramedical Students.

A purpose of the study is to provide basic information in order to find better ways for more effective cadaver dissection education by analyzing education effect on paramedical students after cadaver dissection. By using questionnaires composed of 12 questions, we have surveyed 1,041 paramedical students who participate in cadaver dissection in 2013 and analysed the results. The paramedical students are the department of nursing science, operation treatment, physical therapy, alternative medicine, clinical pathology, emergency rescue and dental hygienics. As a result, we have found that cadaver dissection makes students have more respect for human life and dignity, helps students learn anatomy and major. Furthermore, the degrees of satisfaction, interest, intention of afterward participation in cadaver dissection afterward are high. However, the degrees of intention of cadaver donations are low. We need to develop cadaver dissection programme customized for each majors in order to helps students have more respect for human life and dignity, more professionalism, more effective cadaver dissection education.

Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP), a 28 amino acid basic polypeptide, is known to induce histamine release from human and rat mast cells in vitro and cause a wheel formation in rat skin. However, cellular events associated with histamine release are not clearly understood. In this study, we have examined the calcium flux and cGMP formation associated with histamine release in the ANP-treated mast cells. ANP, in vitro, induced mast cell degranulation and histamine release in a dose-dependent manner. ANP also induced an enhanced calcium uptake into cells and increased the cellular level of cGMP in mast cells. A high level of calcium in the media caused an inhibition of ANP-dependent histamine release but enhanced the level of intracellular cGMP of mast cells. ANP inducing a dose-dependent increase in vascular permeability of rat skin was confirmed by the extravasation of the circulating Evans blue. The results indicate ANP induced the histamine release and an increase in vascular permeability through mast cell degranulation in cGMP-independent and calcium uptake-dependent manner.

9.The Effect of Chitosan-TGF-beta1 Conjugate on Full Thickness Articular Cartilage Defect in the Rabbit Knee Model (Preliminary Report).

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of the chitosan-TGF-beta1 conjugate on articular cartilage defects of rabbits' knees MATERIALS AND METHODS: Full thickness cartilage defect(6mm, round shape) was made at both knees of 20 rabbits and, after the lapse of 3 days, chitosan-TGF-beta1(15ng/ml, 1ml) was injected into one side(experimental group) of knees and PBS(1ml) was injected into the other side(control group). 5 rabbits were sacrificed 6 weeks after the injection and the rest of 15 rabbits 12 weeks later. Then, gross morphology and histological evaluation(Mendelson scoring) was conducted. RESULTS: No arthritic findings was observed and histological results in the experimental group at 6(Ave. 11.3+/-1.5) and 12(Ave. 4.5+/-1.9) weeks postoperatively were superior to those in the control group at 6(Ave. 14.6+/-1.7) and 12(Ave. 9.8+/-2.2) weeks. Especially at 12 weeks, the experimental group was superior to the control group statistically in results of 5 subgroups except for filling of defects. The difference of two groups at 12 weeks was more remarkable than those at 6 weeks. CONCLUSION: Regeneration of something very close to normal cartilage was observed in the experimental group. It shows that the biological activity of TGF-beta1 is sustained by the action of conjugate with chitosan, through prolonged half life of TGF-beta1.

10.Results of Deep Lamellar Endothelial Keratoplasty (DLEK).

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical results of deep lamellar endothelial keratoplasty (DLEK) surgery in patients with bullous keratopathy. METHODS: Seven eyes of 7 patients diagnosed with bullous keratopathy were evaluated for pre- and postoperative visual acuity, refractive error, astigmatism, and corneal topographic results. Specular microscopy and corneal pachymetry was performed in order to evaluate the corneal endothelial cell status. Postoperative complications such as graft rejection, infection, glaucoma, and graft dislocation were also evaluated. RESULTS: Preoperative visual acuity improved from 0.006 (CF ~ 0.02) to 0.4 (0.1 ~ 0.5) at an average of 1.2+/-0.18 years of follow-up. Manifest refraction, topographic astigmatism, corneal endothelial cell density, and central corneal thickness at the final visit were 1.21+/-0.73D, 2.1+/-0.70D, 1304+/-682 cells/mm2, and 504+/-128 micrometer respectively. Two eyes (28.6%) developed graft rejection, one of which recovered after intensive steroid treatment. However, one patient (14.3%) underwent penetrating keratoplasty due to graft failure at 6 months postoperatively. Seven of 7 eyes were noted to have graft dislocation, all of which were repositioned and attached after air injection or suture. CONCLUSIONS: DLEK surgery is an effective alternative to conventional penetrating keratoplasty for bullous keratopathy patients because of fast visual recovery and low incidence of postoperative astigmatism.
