Korean Journal of Child Health Nursing 2004;10(1):80-88
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to explore the fatigue of the mothers of the hospitalized children's mothers in descriptive study. METHOD: Two hundred eighty three mothers who take care of the hospitalized children in three University hospitals were enrolled from June, 1 to October, 30, 2003. Data were collected using a questionnaire titled "Symptom Table on Fatigue Perception" designed by the Fatigue Research Committee of Japan, consisted of a total 30 items categorized into three sub-dimensions: the physical, the psychological and the neuro-sensory. SPSS was used for the analysis of data with 0.05 of significance. RESULT: 1) The mean average fatigue score of subjects was 1.94(SD:.48): the physical fatigue revealed the highest value with a mean of 2.19(SD:.57), followed by psychological fatigue with a mean score of 1.85(SD:.52), neuro-sensory fatigue with a mean of 1.79(SD:.51). 2) With the respect to the general characteristics of hospitalized children and mothers, there were statistically significant differences in the mothers' fatigue perception by the child sex(t=-2.697, p=.008), the character of child(F=9.032, p=.000), the child condition compared to pre-hospitalization(F=3.523, p=.031), with or without support in domestic households(t=-1.981, p=.049), the amount of sleeping time(t=2.704, p=.007), and with or without of night-time sleep disturbance because of the child hospitalization(t=2.082, p=.038). CONCLUSION: These results suggest that health care professional need to be aware of the persistent presence of the maternal fatigue related to the child hospitalization and the factors worsen the degree of the fatigue.

Journal of the Korean Pediatric Society 1994;37(5):718-725
Rett syndrome is progressive neurodegenerative disorder in female patients, characterized by autistic behavior, mental retardation, loss of purposeful hand skills, stereotypic hand movement, breathing dysfunction, severely impaired language, ataxia, and seizure. The diagnosis of Rett syndrome is based on its characteristic clinical manifestation and course. The electroencephalographic (EEG) findings of Rett syndrome are nonspecific, but a progressive deterioration in the EEG, characterized by a slowing of background activity and spike sharp wave discharges, may be observed. We experienced one case of Rett syndrome in a 5 year old girl having mental retardation, loss of purposeful hand skills, stereotypic hand movements (clapping, washing, hand-to-mouth), breathing dysfunction (hyperventilation/apnea). Her EEG findings on Video-EEG monitoring are excessive slowing waves during awake state and frequent spike discharges from left or centrotemporal area during sleeping. We report a case of Rett syndrome with brief review of related literatures.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to examine the point prevalence of anxiety, depression and the associated risk factors in hospitalized patients with cancer. METHODS: A total of 114 patients with cancer who admitted to the Cancer Center in St. Mary's Hospital were enrolled for a day. The patients were asked to complete Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale(HADS). Sociodemographic and cancer related clinical variables were also evaluated. RESULTS: The point prevalence of anxiety and depression was 10.5% and 34.2%, respectively, as assessed with HADS. Logistic regression models revealed that distant metastasis was significantly associated with anxiety in patients with cancer and previous chemotherapy and Low socioeconomic status were significantly associated with depression. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that more than one third of patients with cancer suffer from either anxiety or depression. In addition, previous chemotherapy as well as low socioeconomic status and distant metastasis were associated risk factors of anxiety and depression, respectively. These findings suggest the need for screening and systematized psychosocial intervention for psychological distress in hospitalized patients with cancer.

Ultrasonography 2019;38(1):37-43
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the feasibility of shear wave ultrasound elastography for differentiating superficial benign soft tissue masses through a comparison of their shear moduli. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 48 masses from 46 patients from February 2014 to May 2016. Surgical excision, fine-needle aspiration, and clinical findings were used for the differential diagnosis. The ultrasonographic examinations were conducted by a single musculoskeletal radiologist, and the ultrasonographic findings were reviewed by two other radiologists who were blinded to the final diagnosis. Conventional ultrasonographic features and the median shear modulus were evaluated. We compared the median shear moduli of epidermoid cysts, ganglion cysts, and lipomatous tumors using the Kruskal-Wallis test. Additionally, the Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare two distinct groups. RESULTS: Significant differences were found in the median shear moduli of epidermoid cysts, ganglion cysts, and lipomatous tumors (23.7, 5.8, and 9.2 kPa, respectively; P=0.019). Epidermoid cysts showed a greater median shear modulus than ganglion cysts (P=0.014) and lipomatous tumors (P=0.049). CONCLUSION: Shear wave elastography may contribute to the differential diagnosis of superficial benign soft tissue masses through a direct quantitative analysis.

6.Quantitative Analysis of Tendon Reflexes of Upper Extremities in Normal Volunteers.
Journal of the Korean Academy of Rehabilitation Medicine 1999;23(2):310-315
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to establish the normal values of tendon reflexes (T-reflex) in upper extremities of normal Korean adults. METHOD: T-reflex responses were recorded in 30 normal volunteers by delivering tendon taps with a hand operated electric reflex hammer. From 5 repeated trials of each subject, the shortest onset latency and duration, the largest peak to peak amplitude of compound muscle action potentials were chosen for representative values. RESULTS: 1) There was no significance in the side-to-side differences for all values. 2) Mean values of latency were 13.8+/-1.1 msec in males, 12.4+/-0.9 msec in females for biceps T-reflex and 13.0+/-1.1 msec in males, 11.3+/-1.0 msec in females for triceps T-reflex and there were significant differences between males and females. 3) Height and upper arm length showed a significant positive correlation with biceps and triceps T-reflex latency (p<0.001). CONCLUSION: We believe that our results can be used as a guideline researching the tendon reflexes in upper extremities.

7.The Influence of COVID-19 on Physical Activity, Sleep Quality, and the Quality of Life in Adults by Age Group
Journal of Korean Physical Therapy 2022;34(1):18-25
Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to identify changes in physical activity, sleep quality, and quality of life (QOL) during COVID-19 in adults by age group.
Methods:
An online survey was conducted on a total of 160 participants who were divided into three groups by age; young adults, middle-aged adults, and old adults. The participants responded to the self-reported assessment of the impact of social distancing during COVID-19, International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), and Short Form-36 Health Survey (SF-36). Descriptive statistics, analysis of variance, and Pearson’s correlation were used for data analysis.
Results:
There were significant differences between the three age groups in physical activity (p < 0.05) and PSQI (p < 0.01) and a post hoc analysis showed that the young adults’ group had significantly higher physical activity than the old adults’ group, while the old adults’ group had significantly lower scores of PSQI (better sleep quality) than the others. The young adults’ group showed a significant negative correlation between the stress from social distancing and QOL (r = -0.27, p < 0.05) and between PSQI and QOL (r = -0.48, p < 0.05). For the middle-aged adults’ group, there was a significant negative correlation between PSQI and QOL (r = -0.53, p < 0.05). The old adults’ group showed a significant negative correlation between the stress from social distancing and physical activity (r = -0.35, p < 0.05) and PSQI (r = -0.50, p < 0.05), while there was a significant positive correlation between physical activity and PSQI (r = 0.30, p < 0.05) and QOL (r = 0.30, p < 0.05).
Conclusion
The results of this study could be used as basic data for the promotion of physical and mental health in the post-COVID-19 era

Korean Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine 1999;11(1):66-79
This study was conducted to evaluate and to recognize the status and the problems of working conditions, and industrial accidents for migrant workers in a group of 342 who lives in Ansan area, Kyunggi province. By the questionnaire written by 5 languages (English, Bangladesh, Indonesian, Chinese and Korean), the informations of socio-demographic factors, occupational conditions of engaged company and general & occupational health status were obtained from June, 1st to July 30th, 1998. We used the ANOVA to examine differences of working hours, days and average monthly wages between overseas industrial trainee and illegal migrant workers, and by using logistic regression, odds ratio of general risk factors for industrial accidents in migrant workers were calculated. The results obtained were as follows 1. The major distribution of nationals were from Philippine, Indonesia, Bangladesh and China(92.1%), and the most of subjects were man(78.9%) and over high school graduate(81.9%). 2. Most migrant workers worked at small scale companies under 50 employees, and engaged in dye, textile clothing, leather industry. The average working hours were 59.9 hours per week in overseas industrial trainee, 64.9 hours in illegal migrant worker respectively. 3. Trainees have transferred to another company for 1.89 times, and workers who have changed qualification from trainee to illegal status were 3.09 tims, and illegal workers moved 2.36 times. The major portion of reason to move to another company were low salary and overdue salary. 4. Trainees, workers who have changed position from trainee to illegal status, and illegal workers knows 62.27%, 42.31%, and 20.45% in each about legal documentation for foreign industrial trainees in Korea "Regulations for protecting and managing of foreign industrial trainees in Korea" published on March 1995. Additionally, trainees and illegal workers have experienced medical examination by 52.3% and 18.2% respectively. 5. Industrial accident condition from Jun. 1st, 1997 to Dec. 3lth, 1997 were as follows in case of frequent rate, trainees and illegal workers were 30.04, 23.78 each, and 8.6%, 7.4% for industrial accident rate respectively. 6. The most common causes and types of industrial accident were inappropriate motions of body and abrasion, and body sites most vulnerable to injury were the hands and fingers. The results suggest that working status and industrial accidents of migrant workers are very poor in Korea. Therefore, occupational safety and health policy aimed at migrant workers are needed to protect the migrant workers.

Journal of Menopausal Medicine 2016;22(2):118-121
Infections of the vulva can present a complex differential to the gynecologist, ranging from superficial skin infections to lifethreatening necrotizing fasciitis. Recognition and timely treatment remain universal to skin and soft-tissue infections as the subcutaneous anatomy of the vulva can facilitate rapid spread to other tissues with significant morbidity and mortality. Employing a multidisciplinary team approach to care for vulvar cellulitis and abscess can guide treatment from antibiotic therapies to more aggressive surgical debridement. In this report, we describe a case of vulvar abscess caused by Methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in a postmenopausal woman with underlying diseases of bronchiectasis and atelectasis.

Journal of Rheumatic Diseases 2011;18(4):264-275
OBJECTIVE: The physiological and pathogenetic role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in the maintenance of joint homeostasis and in the development of arthritis is recently being elucidated. In this study, we attempted to identify differentially expressed miRNAs in human osteoarthritis (OA) chondrocytes in response to interleukin (IL)-1beta. In addition, simultaneous profiling of miRNA and mRNA expression was performed to get an integrated analysis of miRNA and mRNA expression. METHODS: Monolayer cultured chondrocytes obtained from knee cartilages of OA patients were stimulated with IL-1beta for 4 hours and RNA was isolated. One microgram of total RNA was polyadenylated and converted to cDNA and miRNA microarray was performed. Seven hundred thirty five oligos were used, corresponding to 470 well-annotated human miRNA sequences and 265 potential miRNAs that were identified recently. mRNA microarray was performed simultaneously using the RNA samples that were used for miRNA array. Both sequence and expression information was used to identify regulatory relationship between miRNA and mRNA pairs. RESULTS: Expression profiling of miRNA extracted from IL-1beta treated chondrocytes identified 25 miRNA which showed differential expression. We also identified 7190 mRNAs differentially regulated by IL-1beta treatment. Among the 25 miRNAs differentially regulated, 13 miRNAs had targets searched by MiRANDA scheme. By combining target search and miRNA-mRNA pairing, we could identify 1043 miRNA-mRNA target pairs. MiR-200a was found to be expressed in human OA and normal cartilages, with downregulation in OA lesion cartilages. CONCLUSION: It is suggested that miRNA may play a role in the regulation of cartilage degradation in OA.
