Some fifty survivors participated in the narrative therapy sessions from March 2003 to December 2004, and thirty cases were analyzed using the transcripts. Each participant's surviving story was summarized, and then interpreted and reinterpreted by the survivors themselves in collaboration with the researcher. Thetwo main principles in narrative analysis were hermeneutical distanciation and hermeneutical circulation. RESULT AND CONCLUSION: First, nursing involvement should play active roles from the early stages of disaster incidents. Specifically, emergency nursing and flexible coping plans are to be available according to the specific properties of each case. Secondly, it is necessary to try to understand the extreme emotional experiences of disaster survival. The horror and pain people feel at an incident cannot simply be generalized, and it requires that each case be approached individually to help stop social alienation. Thirdly, more constant and long-term studies are required to set up nursing strategies for disaster survivors. Forming a trustingrelationship with survivors is basic, and formally registering as participants is necessary for continuous interventions. Fourthly, we should deeply appreciate the danger and complexity of modern society and understand the complex nature of disaster. Fifthly, interdisciplinary activities and studies are necessary in combination with various other fields to establish a framework of total nursing care for disaster incidents. Lastly, it is urgently necessary to educate families and friends of the survivors and the society as a whole about life after a disaster.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this meta-analysis isto identify social psychological factors related to quality of life and estimate the effect sizes of the factors among patients with strokes. METHODS: Thirteen studies with a total of 1,814 patients published from the earliest records to January 8, 2017 were selected through a systematic process of searching the literature, and evaluated against influencing factors of quality of life and their effect sizes. Pooled effect sizes were calculated using the random effect model. Meta-analysis was conducted by R software. RESULTS: The following influencing factors had a strong association with quality of life with stroke: depression (r=−.50; 95% CI: −0.63~−0.46), activities of daily living (r=.46; 95% CI: 0.35~0.56), and social support (r=.40; 95% CI: 0.24~0.53). CONCLUSION: The findings confirm that depression, activities of daily living and social support are associated with quality of life among patients with stroke survivors. We recommend that any intervention program to improve the quality of life with stroke patients consider addressing these modifiable influencing factors.

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to examine the late effects, social adjustment, and quality of life in adolescents who had been completely treated for childhood leukemia and their parents. METHODS: Participants consisted of 41 pairs of adolescent survivors (13-18 years) and their parents. Parents checked for their child's physical late effects. The Korean Version of Post-Traumatic Symptoms for psychological late effects, social functioning questionnaire for social adjustment and the PedsQL 4.0 Generic Core Scales for quality of life were completed by adolescents and parents. Data were analyzed using SPSS. RESULTS: Twenty out of 41 adolescents had one or more physical late effects. Adolescents showed more serious psychological late effect than parents. Five children and seven parents had above cut-off scores and they were considered the high risk group for posttraumatic symptoms. Parent-reported scores were significantly higher than child-reported scores in terms of social adjustment and emotional functioning of quality of life. Low school functioning in adolescents was associated with physical late effects. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that long-term and systematic management for childhood leukemia survivors affect positive social adjustment and can further improve quality of life.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to identify the knowledge structure of cancer survivors. METHODS: For data, 1099 articles were collected, with 365 keywords as a Noun phrase extracted from the articles and standardized for analyzing. Co-occurrence matrix were generated via a cosine similarity measure, and then the network analysis and visualization using PFNet and NodeXL were applied to visualize intellectual interchanges among keywords. RESULTS: According to the result of the content analysis and the cluster analysis of author keywords from cancer survivors articles, keywords such as 'quality of life', 'breast neoplasms', 'cancer survivors', 'neoplasms', 'exercise' had a high degree centrality. The 9 most important research topics concerning cancer survivors were 'cancer-related symptoms and nursing', 'cancer treatment-related issues', 'late effects', 'psychosocial issues', 'healthy living managements', 'social supports', 'palliative cares', 'research methodology', and 'research participants'. CONCLUSION: Through this study, the knowledge structure of cancer survivors was identified. The 9 topics identified in this study can provide useful research direction for the development of nursing in cancer survivor research areas. The Network analysis used in this study will be useful for identifying the knowledge structure and identifying general views and current cancer survivor research trends.

Although the same traumatic stress was experienced, the presenting symptoms and their severity might be different. The difference could be associated with the coping style. Thus we were interested in which coping style is more efficient in dealing with stress. Among the 624 survivors of Sampoong Accident we selected active coping group(n=67) and passive coping group(n=63) using the Ways of Coping Checklist. These two groups were compared on scores in Beck Depression Inventory, State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, Impact of Event Scale, MMPI, and 16 Personality Factor Questionnaire. The passive coping group reported that they were more anxious and depressive, and they showed more intrusive thought about traumatic stress, denial, and vulnerable factors of personality than active coping group. These results suggest that active coping style such as problem-focused coping and seeking social supports is more efficient and successful in case as Sampoong Accident. Therefore, for the survivors of extremely traumatic accident, training of active coping skills can be helpful for rehabilitation and adaptation in everyday life.

Approximately two thirds of stroke survivors have residual neurological deficits that persistently impair function. Hence, alternative strategies are needed to reduce the long-term disability and functional impairment from severe weakness of limbs. Generalization of treatment effect takes place when the effects of the therapy spread to a variety of related behaviors and similar movements. And the transfer effect that training of the limbs on one side of the body appeared to be shared by those on the other side simultaneously. The two concepts are closely linked together. These forms of learning are organized through a higher-level cerebral mechanism and can be associated corpus callosum. Several promising new rehabilitation approaches such as bilateral training are based on the transfer effect. The purpose of this review is to introduce transfer effect of treatment on motor learning after stroke.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the associations of post-stroke emotional incontinence (PSEI) with various psychiatric symptoms and quality of life independent of potential covariates in survivors of acute stroke. METHODS: A total of 423 stroke patients were assessed within 2 weeks of the index event. Psychiatric symptoms were assessed by the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R), which has nine domains comprising Somatization, Obsessive-Compulsive, Interpersonal Sensitivity, Depression, Anxiety, Hostility, Phobic Anxiety, Paranoid Ideation, and Psychoticism. Quality of life was measured using the World Health Organization Quality of Life abbreviated form (WHOQOL-BREF), which has four domains related to physical factors, psychological factors, social relationships, and environmental context. Associations of PSEI with scores on the SCL-90-R and WHOQOL-BREF were investigated using pairwise logistic regression model adjustment for potential sociodemographic and clinical covariates. RESULTS: PSEI was present in 51 (12.1%) patients. PSEI was associated with the Obsessive-Compulsive, Interpersonal Sensitivity, and Hostility symptom dimensions of the SCL-90-R and with the psychological factors and social relationships domains of the WHOQOL-BREF independent of important covariates including previous stroke, stroke severity, and physical disability. CONCLUSION: PSEI causes some aspects of psychiatric distress and negatively affects psychological and interpersonal quality of life. For patients with PSEI, special attention to psychiatric comorbidity and quality of life is needed, even in the acute stage of stroke.

Renal transplantation is the treatment of choice for children with end-stage renal disease. The outcome of pediatric kidney transplantation has improved dramatically in recent years, with lower acute rejection rates, superior graft survival, and low mortality. These improvements have allowed increased attention to other aspects of care for long-term survivors. Taking this into consideration, this review article will focus on the key issues related to pediatric kidney transplantation such as growth, neurocognitive function, nonadherence, and posttransplantation infectious complications, including lymphoproliferative disease, to broaden the understanding of pediatricians who provide pre-and postoperative care to children with end-stage renal disease.

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to compare two models of the pediatric logistic organ dysfunction (PELOD) score and the pediatric index of mortality (PIM) 2 score in the emergency department (ED) and intensive care unit (ICU). METHODS: 90 pediatric patients who were admitted to the ICU in ED from January 2003 to December 2008 were enrolled in this study. PELOD score and PIM 2 score calculations were performed in the ED and ICU. We classified these patients into either the survivor or non-survivor groups and analyzed the clinical variables between two groups. We used Hosmer-Lemeshow goodness-of-fit tests to evaluate calibration, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and standardized mortality ratio (SMR). RESULTS: Among the 90 pediatric patients, 56 (62.2%) were male, and 9 (10.0%) patients died. Expected mortalities were PIM 2 = 10.35, PELOD = 8.33 in ED and PIM 2 = 8.84, PELOD = 8.26 in ICU. PIM 2 showed fit calibration (x(2) = 6.228, p = 0.622) in the ED. In the ICU, both PELOD and PIM 2 showed calibration (x(2) = 4.625, p = 0.185) and (x(2) = 7.616, p = 0.472), respectively. PIM 2 in ED showed the best discrimination, with area under the curve (AUC) = 0.949 (95% CI, 0.881-0.984). CONCLUSIONS: PIM 2 score in ED was fit. Also, PELOD and PIM 2 score in ICU was fit. But PELOD in ED was unfit.
