This study is based on the results of cryo-extraction of the lens in 123 eyes(98 cases) which were operated in Chosun University Hospital between Jan. 1979 and Feb. 1981. The results are summarized as follow: 1. The cryo-extraction have been done for 41 males and 57 females of the 98 patients. 2. The incidences of complication during operation were capsule rupture (5.7%), vitreous loss (4.9%), iris prolapse (1.6%). 3. The incidences of early postoperative complication were hyphema (12.1%). updra wn pupil (8.9%), corneal edema (6.5%), flat anterior chamber (4.9%). 4. The incidences of late postoperative complication were vitreous bulging (5.7%), vitreous opacity (4%), glaucoma(2.4%), uveitis (0.8%), retinal detachment (0.8%). 5. The ccrrected visual acuities before discharge of hospital were: more than 0.5 ... 39.0% (48 eyes), 0.1-0.4 ... 48.8% (60 eyes), less than 0.1 ... 12.2% (15 eyes). 6. The major causes of visual acuity less than 0.1 were vitreous opacity (33.4%), secondary glaucoma (20%), proliferative diabetic retinopathy (20%), corneal opacity (13.4%), retinal degeneration (13.3%).

Pyogenic osteomyelitis is at times tragic disease from which severe deformity and disability may result. The incidence and mortality rate of pyogenic osteomyelitis have decreased strikingly since penicillin became available for general use in the treatment of pyogenic osteomyelitis in 1944 and had a dramatic effect. Recently, since the use of new antlblotics, the effect of treatment has been expected in Pyogenic osteomyelitis. But causative organisms of pyogenic osteomyelitis was gradually increasing in resistance to antibiotics. There is also a trend of gradual increase of pyogenic osteomyelltis due to Gram negative bacilli. The author has been analysed 134 patients on whom followup was observed for a minimum of six months at the Department of Orthopedic Surgery of Hanyang University from May, 1972 to December, 1978. The results were as follows: 1. The incidence of pyogenic osteomyelitis is a trend of gradual increase with 14.2% in 1973, 15.7% in 1975 and 26.9% in 1978. 2. Sex ratio was 2.6: 1 (Male: Female): Age distribution showed the group between 5 and 15 years old was 20 patients(62.5%) in acute osteomyeIitis, and the group between 15 and 30 years oId was 52 Patients (51%) In chronic osteomyelitis. 3. The order of involved bones is femur(41%), tibia(27.8%) and humerus(10.4%). 4. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate was remarkably increased in 92.8% of male and 86.5% of female. 5. The causative organism was mostly staphylococcus aureus(84%) in acute osteomyelitis, and Staphylococcus aureus(44.8%), mixed organisms(20.9%) and Gram negative, bacilli(8.3%) in chronic osteomyelitis. Especially, mixed cases with Staphylococcus aureus and Gram negative bacilli contain 55% of mixed organisms. 6. Penicillin was most resistant (79.7%) to Staphylococcus aureus. Cloxacillin was most susceptable (91.3%) to Staphylococcus aureus. 7. The treatment of acute osteomyelitis showed arrest(72.7%) in case of massive antibiotics by early finding of clinical symptom, but if clinical symptoms were not improved within 48 hours with the use of antibiotics, early decompression was done and was arrested(84.6%) in acute osteomyelitis. Closed continuous irrigatlon with saucerization was done and was arrested(85.7%) in chronic osteomyelitis.

The use of artificial skins for full thickness wounds is an accepted technique, but unfortunately the take rate is low and the aesthetical result is not acceptable. The freeze-drying treatment of allogenic tissues can destroy cells with preserving the structural organization of extracellular matrices, permitting allogenic transplantation. In this study we investigated a new method to process the allogenic skin for transplantable allogenic dermis and this dermis was evaluated in a full thickness wound model. The results are as followings; 1. After treatment with NaCl and SDS solution and then with freeze-drying method, the allogenic dermis shows acellular dermal matrix with preserved normal extracellular matrix. 2. This allogenic dermis became completely incorporated into the wound without evidence of rejection or replacement by scar tissue. 3. The take rate of thin autografts overlying the allogenic dermis that were applied simultaneously was comparable to take rate of autograft alone. 4. The reduction in secondary contraction by allogenic dermis treated wounds was significant. 5. After grafting with cultured keratinocytes, the degree of epithelial coverage was 70% at 2 weeks. In conclusion, the allogenic dermis processed with our method displayed lack of antigenicity, and rapid revascularization. This allogenic dermis can permit simultaneous engraftment of an overlying STSG or cultured kerationocytes, reduce secondary contraction and improve cosmesis of full thickness wounds.

A clinical experience was made on 14 patients of penis carcinoma admitted to the Department of Urology. Chosun University Hospital during the period from January, 1979 to December, 1987 and following results were obtained. 1. The incidence of penile carcinoma was 0.6% of total inpatients of the Urologic Department and 5.8% of genitourinary tract cancer. 2. Age distribution was between 42 and 78, showing highest incidence at 50-59 years old. 3. Clinical findings were ; mass 71.5%, ulcer 21.4% and inguinal lymphadenopathy 57%. 4. Clinical stages were distributed as follows : 2 cases in stage I, 6 cases in stage II, 5 cases in stage III, and 1 case in stage IV. 5. Surgical treatment were partial amputation only in 6 cases, partial amputation with lymph node dissection in 3 cases, total penectomy and lymph node dissection in 2 cases, total penectomy only in 1 case, circumcision only in 1 case. 6. Biopsy were performed in 7 cases whose lymph node were palpable and 4 cases were positive for metastasis (57.1 %).

Fractures of the humeral neck are relatively common, but their anatomical complexities make closed reduction difficult sometimes, and in case of reduction it is tough to maintain the position. Even open reduction of the fracture also faces multiple problems including poor functional recovery of the shoulder joint. The Department of Orthopedic Surgery of Seoul Adventist Hospital developed a device of external fixation for 13 humeral neck fractures. We used this method for displaced and unstable fractures of humeral neck from December 1987 to March 1989. Satisfactory results were obtained in 11 cases and poor results in 2 cases. We think our method is a effective useful way of treatment for humeral neck fractures, and its main advantages are as follows:1. Using proximal and distal bars, fracture can be easily reduced and firmly maintained. 2. Active motion exercise can be started early and functional recovery of the shoulder joint can be highly predictable. 3. It is quite convenient for treating combined fracture or external wound of same extremity.
