Korean Journal of Pathology 1999;33(11):999-1008
An experimental study was done to evaluate factors influencing guided regeneration of bone in standardized calvarial bony defect. An 8 mm circular transosseous calvarial bony defect was made. Various material such as demineralized freeze-dried bone (DFDB), BioMesh , Millipore filter and its combination was placed in the bony defect. A sequential histopathologic, histochemical, immunohistochemical, and histomorphometric studies were done on the guided bone regeneration in the calvarial bony defect. Bone formation was sigificantly enhanced when the DFDB was retained within the bony defect with a protective bioabsorbable membrane. Inframembranous DFDB-filling was required to prevent collapse of the membrane and preserve spaces for bone regeneration. The bioabsorbable membrane should presumably remain intact for longer than at least 5 weeks to facilitate bone regeneration. The new bone formation was dependent on the barrier-effect (preserving secluded spaces) and inflammation-inducing property of membrane, and guiding bone regeneration of the grafts. Macrophages recruited by grafts were partly involved in decrease of bone regeneration via the sequential events of release of fibronectin, chemotactic effect of the fibronectin to fibroblasts, and collagen lay-down.

Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases 2001;51(1):44-52
BACKGROUND: Oxygen concentrators are convenient to operate and economical for patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). However, oxygen concentrators are not manufactured domestically and the COPD patients are currently treated with imported oxygen concentrators. To evaluate the efficacy and safety of domestically developed prototype oxygen concentrator before clinical application, the efficacy and safety of the domestic oxygen concentrator were evaluate by comparing with the imported one. Meterial and METHODS: The clinical tests were performed on 36 hyperhydrosis patients from April 1999 to August 1999. Domestic and imported oxygen concentrators were in turn applied to the same patient, who inspired oxygen for 60 minutes at a rate of 3 liters per minute through nasal prong. The oxygen concentrator, which was applied first, was randomly allocated. The arterial partial oxygen pressure (PaO2) was estimated to compare the efficacy; and the carboxy hemoglobin(COHb), pH, arterial CO2 partial pressure, pulse rate, blood pressure, and respiration rate to compare the safety before and after applying each oxygen concentrator. A student t-test was used to analyze the results. RESULTS: In respect to efficacy, the difference in the change of PaO2 before and after the application between two concentrators was not statistically significant. In respect to safety, the differences in the changes of COHb, pH, partial pressure of arterial CO2, pulse rate, blood pressure, respiration rate between two concentrators were also not statistically significant. CONCLUSION: The domestically developed oxygen concentrator, showed satisfactory efficacy and safety when compared with the imported one.

In comparison with normal cervix, mitosis occur more frequently in cervical intraepithelial neoplasia(CIN) and are seen at high levels, suggesting that CIN may be associated with a progressive dysfunction in proliferative activity of cervical cells. This study aims that expression of proliferative cell nuclear antigen(PCNA) was examined to determine proliferative activity at the cell of CIN. Sixty four colposcopic biopsies from patients with cytologically and/or colposcopically dtagnosed condyloma and CIN. The cases were classified as follows ; 19 as normal cervix and condyloma, 15 as CIN I, 16 as CIN II and 14 as CIN III. Immunohistochemical detection of PCNA was performed on paraffin sections by the streptavidin-biotin peroxidase method using the monoclonal antibody PC10. There was a statisically significant correlation between the CIN grade and the PCNA grade(p<0.05). In addition, the PCNA grade showed significant correlation with mitotic grade(p<0.05) and the CIN grade was also observed(p<0.05). This study suggests that the cell proliferation index as detected immunohistochemically using PCNA may be a useful adjunct to histopathological diagnosis of various grades of CIN.

Journal of the Korean Pediatric Society 1993;36(5):721-724
We report one case of bilateral testicular torsion. A 400 gm male infant, born by cesarean section due to induction failure at 42 weeks gestation, was hospitalized at 9 days of age secondary to bilateral testicular mass. Physical examination revealed an healthy baby with enlarged, firm, nontender mass on both sides of the scrotum. Transillumination of the mass showed no transmission of light. Laboratory data included a normal CBC and a urinalysis. Ultrasonogrophy showed well encapsulated 0.9 x 0.9 x 1.0 cm sized and 1.5 x 1.3 x 1.3 cm sized homogenous hypoechoic solid mass in left and right testicles respectively, remainder testicular parenchyme showed normal structure. Exploration of the testes was performed at 25-days old under general anesthesia. Exploration revealed a infarction of the right testes secondary to spermatic cord torsion, evidenced by clockwise turns outside the tunica vaginalis of 270 degrees. Left testes was infarcted but a quarter of them seemed normal. Orchiectomy on right and fixation on left testes were performed respectively. Left spermatic cord seemed to be detorted spontaneously. Postoperatively the infant did well and discharged 5 days after operation. Follow up examination during the next 3 months have shown appropriated sized testicle with normal colorization and arterial pulse. Testicular scan performed at age 39 days showed good perfusion of left testes.

Korean Journal of Pathology 1986;20(2):195-198
The celiac disease is an immunologic disorder, related to dietary gluten and morphologically characterized by a striking loss of villi in the small intestine and, with it, a marked reduction in the absorptive surface area. The authors experienced a rare case of pathologically confirmed malinant histiocytic lymphoma of jejunum, associated with celiac disease which was histologically manifested with ulcerative jejunitis in a 25-year-old Korean female who had suffered from projectile vomiting for 2 months. We report this case with literature review emphasis on the pathogenesis of malignant neoplasm in celiac disease and pathogenetic relationship between ulcerative jejunitis and celiac disease. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of malignant histiocytic lymphoma complicating celiac disease with ulcerative jejunitis, in Korea.

Journal of Korean Academy of Nursing 2007;37(5):744-753
PURPOSE: The effects of telephone intervention on self-care practices and quality of life for gynecological cancer patients under chemotherapy was investigated. METHODS: A non-equivalent control group pre-test post-test quasi-experimental design was used. The subjects were women cancer patients who had received less than two chemotherapy sessions at C university hospital of Chonnam province(26 in the experimental group: 25 in the control group). The patient's self-care practices(Na & Lee, 1999; Jang, 2004) and quality of life(Lee & Jo, 1997) were measured three times. using a questionnaire. The data was analyzed by Repeated Measures ANOVA, the Friedman test, and the Mann-Whitney test using the SPSS window version 12.0 program. RESULTS: This study showed that the score of self-care practices and quality of life for the experimental group under telephone counseling were higher than those of the control group. CONCLUSION: This study revealed that a telephone intervention as supportive nursing care for women cancer patients under going chemotherapy was effective for self-care practices and qualify of life during the recovery period. Futhermore, this study also suggests that telephone counseling can serve as a continuing nursing supportive intervention for women cancer patients for the upcoming stages of further chemotherapy.

Korean Journal of Pathology 1988;22(4):471-474
We have recently experienced a case of mammary hamartoma in 29-year-old woman. Hamartoma of the breast is a rare benign tumor-like lesion which is characteristically well demarcated by thin layer of fibrofatty tissue and composed of essentially normal mammary tissue with mammary glandular structure and fibrous stroma containing variable amounts of fat. The lobular architecture is relatively well preserved. It can be readily recognized, but should not be confused with fibroadenoma or mammary dysplasia. It also shows characteristic mammographic picture.
