Korean Journal of Pathology 1999;33(8):596-602
Tumor angiogenesis has been found to have prognostic significance in many tumor types for predicting an increased risk of metastasis. We assessed tumor vascularity in 28 cases of borderline malignancy and 71 cases of carcinoma of the ovary which had been resected and diagnosed, using the highly specific endothelial cell marker CD34. The numbers of microvessels were counted in 200 magnification in three highly vascularised areas. The numbers of microvessels in carcinomas were higher than that in the borderline malignancy of serous and mucinous tumors. The number of microvessels of mucinous carcinomas was significantly higher than that of serous carcinomas. There were neither significant differences in the number of microvessels according to histological tumor types (p=0.075) nor significant differences in the number of microvessels according to FIGO stages (p=0.072). But in serous carcinomas, the number of microvessels was higher in the FIGO III-IV stage than in the FIGO I-II stage (p=0.017). This study showed higher neovascularization in malignant tumor than borderline malignancy, and in the advanced stage (FIGO III-IV) than less advanced stage (FIGO I-II) of serous carcinomas.

Korean Circulation Journal 1994;24(5):722-725
Atrial septal defect is one of the most common congenital heart diseases in adult, of which absolute causes is not confirmed, but explained by multifactorial inheritance. In Korea, there has been no case report of atrial septal defect in identical twins in spite of some reports of atrial septal defect in relatives and twins in other countries. We present a first case of atrial septal defect in identical twins whose mother had no infection or medication history during pregnancy.

Journal of the Korean Society of Medical Ultrasound 2008;27(3):157-161
PURPOSE: To describe the sonographic features of angioleiomyoma arising from superficial soft tissue. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of the sonographic findings of 11 pathologically proven angioleiomyomas was performed. We evaluated the location, layer, size, shape, margin, echotexture, echogenicity, internal content, presence of calcification, and relationship to adjacent structures on gray scale sonography. We evaluated the presence, degree, and distribution pattern of vascularity within the mass on color Doppler sonography. RESULTS: All tumors were located in the subcutaneous layers of the extremities (5 in hand, 2 in elbow, 2 in knee, 1 in foot, 1 in calf). The sizes ranged from 8 to 30 mm, with an average size of 15.5 mm. All lesions were relatively homogeneous and hypoechoic, with well-defined margins and oval to round shape. There were no intratumoral calcifications or cystic portions in any of the masses. Vascularity was not detected in any patient (type 1), but was easily detected in 10 other patients. The degree of vascularity was mild (type 2) in 1 patient, moderate (type 3) in 4, and abundant (type 4) in 5. CONCLUSION: Although angioleiomyoma is an uncommon entity, our study suggests that it must be included in the differential diagnosis of well-defined, hypoechoic, vascular subcutaneous tumors in the extremities.

The Journal of the Korean Society for Transplantation 1997;11(2):203-212
Ischemia reperfusion injury is a major contributing cause to early graft failure in lung transplantation. To develop a new and more improved preservation solution for lung transplantation, we formulated basic compositions of new solution made by adding several additives to extracellular type dextran solution. The aim of this study was to compare the preservation effect of this newly composed solution (group 2) to that of the Euro-Collins solution (group 1) on postischemic lung function in a canine left lung transplantation model. Six adult mongrel dogs were used as subjects for left lung allotransplantation. Three donor dogs were flushed with the new solution (Group 2, n=3), while the remaining three were flushed with the Euro-Collins solution, serving as the control (Group 1, n=3). The allografts were stored in each preservation solution at 4oC. Left single lung transplantations were performed. After left lung allotransplamtation, lung functions were assessed at 10, 30, 60, and 120 min after reperfusion. Although better arterial oxygen tensions were observed in group 2, they were not statistically significant. The mean pulmonary arterial pressure showed no difference between two groups. Even though pulmonary vascular resistances were slightly higher in group 2, their differences showed no statistical significance. Autopsy findings revealed findings of pulmonary venous occlusion by thrombi and bronchial obstruction by granulation tissue in two cases of group 2. But it seemed that those findings were due to surgical failures or rejections rather than primary graft failures resulting from poor preservation. Compared to the Euro-Collins solution, the new solution demonstrated comparative allograft preservation in canine single left lung transplantation models. We concluded that this new solution could be used as a basic composition for the future development of ideal preservation solution.

Korean Journal of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy 1999;19(6):878-884
BACKGROUND AND AIMS: When acute gastric anisakiasis is clinically suspected, endoscopic removal of larva is the only definite treatment method. However, there has been little known for endoscopic findings of gastric anisakiasis. METHODS: In 39 patients with gastric anisakiasis, the ingested species of marine products and clinical findings were investigated. The form of larvae, the mucosal changes of the insertion site, close and distant area were also analysed during endoscopic examination. RESULTS: Twelve patients (30.8%) ate raw Astroconger myriaster solely, and the most frequent mucosal insertion site of larvae was around the greater curvature of the body (59.5%). Endoscopic findings of erosion (33.3%), hemorrhagic erosion (33.3%) and redness of the mucosa (11.9%) were observed at the insertion site. The adjacent mucosal changes were edema and fold enlargement. All patients were treated medically. CONCLUSIONS: When acute gastric anisakiasis is suspected, the careful endoscopic examination of larva was necessary for confirmatory diagnosis and definite treatment of the disease.

Korean Journal of Dermatology 1993;31(5):784-787
Supernunmerary nipple is a developmental anomaly occuring alon, the course of the embryological milk lines. This entity has receieved little attention in the dermatologic literature and has been confused with a pigmented nevus in some cases. We have experienced two ease of the more unusual form of supern umerary nipple. According to the Kajavas classification, our caes are classified as polithelia pilosa and complete breast with nipple.

Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society 1999;28(6):823-828
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of anterior cervical plate after discectomy and autologous iliac bone graft in the treatment of cervical spondylosis. One hundred and seven cervical spondylotic patients from Jan. 1995 to Mar. 1998 were separated into two groups: Group 1. consisted of 58 patients treated with anterior discectomy, bone fusion, and anterior cervical plate fixations(54 cases of Caspar nonlocking plate and 4 cases of Orion locking plate system), Group 2. consisted of 49 patients treated with anterior discectomy and bone fusion. The mean follow-up duration was 26.5 months(from 6 to 45 months). The overall fusion rate did not showed any difference between the two groups, but in multi-level patients, graft materials related complications(extrusion or collapse of graft) were significantly high in group 2.(p<0.01). Group 1. patients ambulated on POD 1 with Philadelphia collar. The average admission period was 8.4 days following operation. Group 2. patients ambulated on POD 5-7 with Philadelphia collar. The average admission period was 11.9 days after surgery. In conclusion, bony fusion was successfully achieved in both groups and graft materials related complication rate showed no difference in the single level, but was significantly low in group 1 in the multilevel.
