The Korean Journal of Parasitology 2001;39(3):227-232
Eight dogs were experimentally infected with Sarcocystis by oral inoculation of cardiac muscle from naturally infected cattle. The infected dogs commenced discharging of sporocysts in the feces after 10 to 12 days of inoculation, and continued until 20 and 35 days after inoculation. Three dogs were reinfected with cardiac muscle from the naturally infected cattle. Sporocysts reappeared in the feces on 12 to 13 days after reinfection. Sarcocystis sporocysts collected from the experimentally infected dogs were fed to each of the two 30-day-old Korean native calves. The infected calves remained clinically normal, except for the high fever (> or = 40 degrees C) and decreased hematocrit values on day 30 to 40 post inoculation. Muscular cysts of Sarcocystis were found from infected calves on day 40 post inoculation. Proliferative forms of Sarcocystis were also observed in the muscle of infected calves. These results suggest that the Sarcocystis cruzi found in Korean native cattle has a 2-host life cycle with dogs as the definitive host and Korean native calves as the intermediate host.

The Korean Journal of Parasitology 2005;43(4):141-147
A practical and convenient method of rearing Eucyclops serrulatus in a microculture environment is described. A complete life cycle of E. serrulatus was maintained in a narrow space on a microscope slide glass on which a cover glass of 22 x 40 mm in size was mounted at a height of 0.8 mm. The culture medium was constituted by bottled mineral water boiled with grains of Glycine max (soybean). Chilomonas paramecium, a free-living protozoan organism, was provided as live food. Growth of nauplii hatched from eggs to the first stage of copepodite took an average of 7.7 days, and the growth of copepodite 1 to the egg-bearing adult female took an average of 20.1 days in the microculture cell with an average life time of 44.7 days. Continuous passage of copepods was successfully maintained as long as sufficient medium and food were provided. The microculture method enables an in situ microscopic observation on the growth and developmental process of helminth larvae experimentally infected to copepods as well as of copepod itself. Furthermore, it does not require anesthetization and, therefore, minimize the amount of stress exposed to copepods during the handling process.

The Journal of the Korean Orthopaedic Association 1982;17(4):704-709
There is a great difference of opinion regarding the treatment of intraarticular fractures of the calcaneus. Many authors suggested that there are essentially four basic methods of treatment, but the choice of treatment depends on the surgeons preference, the type of fracture, and the age of the patient. We obtained the following results in 11 cases of calcaneal fractures involving subtalar joint which were treated by axial fixation at our hospital from 1977 to 1981. 1. The favourable results were obtained in 5 cases of 6 feet of tongue type fractures and in 3 cases of 5 feet of joint depression fractures. 2. Even if the joint depression type fracture which is not severely comminuted, the treatment with axial fixation is thought to be good method. 3. Axial fixation must be tried in three faces of reduction which are reestablishment of Bohler angle and subtalar joint and reduction of lateral bulging of calcaneus. The results were more excellent in which reduction is achieved near anatomical position.

6.A case report of Cheyletiella infestation on a Whippet dog in Korea.
The Korean Journal of Parasitology 1996;34(4):267-271
A clinical case of Cheyletiella infestation on a dog born and raised in Korea is reported. A three-year old female Whippet was hospitalized due to a multiple fracture and displacement of the left scapula caused by a recent car accident. The mite infestation was not noticed at the time of hospitalization. The dog underwent multiple operations involving internal fixation of the fractured scapula with wire and a plate, followed by extensive chemotherapy with antibiotics and prednisolone. After two months of hospitalization, a pruritic dermatitis near the left scapula developed. Multiple white dandruff-like flakes were seen on the hair coat, especially over the dorsal spine and neck, and the dog expressed increased pruritus by frequently licking and scratching the affected areas. Local dense accumulations of skin debris that became crusty were also observed. Microscopic examination of a skin scraping revealed a heavy infestation of Cheyletiella yasguri, as identified by the presence of hooks of the palpi and the heart-shaped sensory organ on genu I. Immunosuppression elicited by the extensive administration of prednisolone was suspected for the initiation of the generalized mite infestation.

7.Effects of root trunk length after GTR on clinical outcomes.
The Journal of the Korean Academy of Periodontology 2006;36(2):427-434
The form of furcation influence both the pathogenesis of periodontal destruction and therapeutic results. The present study was performed to evaluate the effect of root trunk length on clinical outcomes of guided tissue regeneration. Total 30 mandibular first molars were evaluated in this study. Probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level, vertical defect depth and horizontal defect depth were measured at baseline and 6 month after GTR. Correlation coefficients between root trunk length and other clinical measurement were analyzed. The results of this study were as follows 1. The mean root trunk length in lower 1st molar was 2.15 mm. 2. Probing pocket depth, clinical attachment level, vertical defect depth and horizontal defect depth were significantly reduced at 6 month postoperatively compared to values of baseline 3. Correlation coefficient between root trunk length and vertical defect depth at baseline was 0.406 showing the positive correlation 4. Correlation coefficient between root trunk length and horizontal defect depth at baseline was -0.463 showing the negative correlation. 5. Correlation coefficient between root trunk length and decrease of horizontal defect depth after GTR was 0.654 showing the positive correlation. In conclusion, the root trunk length maybe effector for clinical outcome after guided tissue regeneration.
8.Effects of Medication with Dutasteride on Detection of Prostate Cancer in Patients with Serum Prostate-specific Antigen Level of 4~10 ng/ml.
Jun Shik SHIN ; Sung Ryong CHO
Korean Journal of Andrology 2008;26(1):29-34
Purpose: We assessed the effects of medication with dutasteride on serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA), PSA density (PSAD) and prostate volume to avoid unnecessary biopsies. Materials and Methods: Between 2005 and 2007 patients with serum PSA level of 4~10 ng/ml were recruited in this prospective study. Patients were treated with 0.5 mg of dutasteride once daily for 3 months. PSA, PSAD and prostate volume were measured at baseline and at the end of treatment. The patients with a high PSA level (> or =4 ng/ml) after medication with dutasteride had a prostate biopsy. The patients were divided as group I (prostate cancer; n=29) and group II (benign disease; n=55). We compared the changes of serum PSA, PSAD, and prostate volume change between two groups. Results: In group I, PSA, PSAD and prostate volume decreased from baseline means of 8.16 ng/ml, 0.23 ng/ml/cm3 and 46.81 cc to 5.69 ng/ml, 0.18 ng/ml/cm3 and 40.41 cc. The difference in PSA, PSAD and prostate volume was -0.2%, -2.1% and -3.6% for group I. On the contrary, in group II, PSA, PSAD and prostate volume decreased from baseline means of 7.65 ng/ml, 0.16 ng/ml/cm3 and 56.48 cc to 4.48 ng/ml, 0.11 ng/ml/cm3 and 51.35 cc. The difference in PSA, PSAD and prostate volume was -41.4%, -33.3% and -9.1% for group II. When 4.83 ng/ml and 0.15 ng/ml/cm3 were chosen as the PSA and PSAD cutoff levels after treatment with dutasteride, unnecessary biopsies could be avoided effectively. Conclusions: These data suggest that the magnitude of changes in serum PSA and PSAD after 3 months of dutasteride challenge could be useful to avoid unnecessary prostate biopsies in patients with elevated PSA level.

10.Parasitic Zoonosis Transmitted by Pet Animals.
Journal of the Korean Medical Association 2004;47(6):527-534
The growing popularity of dogs and cats as pet animals in Korea, together with high rates of ascarid and hookworm infections among these animals, has resulted in widespread contamination of the soil with infective eggs and larvae in playgrounds and school yards. Several reports indicated that the prevalence of parasites in soil from playgrounds of kindergarten, elementary schools and residential areas in both urban and rural areas of Korea was as high as 33.3%. With several cases of ocular toxocariasis among Koreans being reported, larva migrans of young people caused by pet animal parasites should be recognized. Although rabies is by far the most dangerous zoonotic pathogen from dogs, children are more cornmonly exposed to various zoonotic parasites such as roundworms, hookworms or giardia originated from pet animals. Several parasites of dogs and cats that can be transmitted to pet owners are discussed.
