2.Benign Osteoblastoma: A Case Report

Osteoblastoma is a rare benign bone tumor and is characterized hitologically by an abundant number of osteoblasts and by the presence of s large amount of osteoid tissue in a highly vascular matrix. The lesion is frequently encountered in children and adolescents with most of the cases occuring between the ages of 10 and 25 years. There is significant sex prevalence (M.: F.=2: 1). Up to now there has been few reports of a benign osteoblastoma occuring in the cervical spine. This report describes a boy of a benign osteoblastoma which involved the cervical vertebral arch and spinous process, presenting with pain and limitation of motion. He was given en-bloc resection of tumor mass and confirmed by histological examination. Postoperation result was good and he goes school without any problem in about 12 months of follow up.

3.Significance of C-Reactive Protein and Transcranial Doppler in Cerebral Vasospasm Following Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

OBJECTIVE: Cerebral vasospasm is a common and potentially devastating complication of aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Inflammatory processes seem to play a major role in the pathogenesis of vasospasm. C-reactive protein (CRP) constitutes a highly sensitive inflammatory marker. Elevation of serum CRP levels has been demonstrated in patients with aSAH. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the possible relationship between CRP levels in the serum and transcranial Doppler (TCD) and the development of vasospasm in patients with aSAH. METHODS: A total of 61 adult patients in whom aSAH was diagnosed were included in the study from November 2008 to May 2011. The patients' demographics, Hunt and Hess grade, Fisher grade, CT scans, digital subtraction angiography studies, and daily neurological examinations were recorded. Serial serum CRP measurements were obtained on days 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13 and TCD was measured on days 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 and 13. All patients underwent either surgical or endovascular treatment within 24 hours of their hemorrhagic attacks. RESULTS: Serum CRP levels peaked on the 3rd postoperative day. There were significant differences between the vasospasm group and the non-vasospasm group on the 1st, 3rd and 5th day. There were significant differences between the vasospasm group and the non-vasospasm group on the 3rd day in the mean middle cerebral artery velocities on TCD. CONCLUSION: Patients with high levels of CRP on the 1st postoperative day and high velocity of mean TCD on the 3rd postoperative day may require closer observation to monitor for the development of vasospasm.

5.A Pseudoaneurysm Appeared after Rebleeding.

A woman who had a spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) and temporal intracerebral hemorrhge (ICH) without any causative lesions on computed tomography (CT) and digital angiography at the day of the stroke. She was considered to have an angiographically negative SAH and scheduled for a repeated angiography. While she was waiting for the next study, she developed a second hemorrhage. CT angiography showed an aneurysmal shadow in the course of the posterior cerebral artery. After the operation, the aneurysm proved to be a pseudoaneurysm.

Since the first issue of Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society published in October, 1972, it has been developed in its quality as well as the quantity. More than 4000 articles have been published and tremendous contribution for the development of Korean Neurosurgical Society was made by the journal. The authors review the history of Journal of Korean Neurosurgical Society including the problems in this situation and suggest the way to make the journal as an internationally famous one.

8.A Study on Mineral Changes on the Weathering Human Hair after Burial using EDX.

This study was undertaken to investigate mineral changes in weathered scalp hair after burial. EDX (energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy) analysis was performed to measure the presence of minerals on the hair surface. Twelve scalp hairs, buried for 5-40 years, were chosen from deceased individuals buried in tombs in Soha-Ri, Kyonggi-Do, and other regions in Korea. Three normal hairs were used as the control group. EDX data showed that carbon, oxygen, and sulfur were detected in hair collected from all three burial grounds. In contrast, calcium was only detected in hair collected from tombs in Soha-ri. The amounts of calcium and sulfur were found to decrease with time for hair collected from tombs in Soha-ri. Similar results were observed with sodium for hair collected from other regions. These results show region specific mineral detection and a decrease in the concentration of minerals with time. Consequently, it is suggested that changes in minerals concentration in weathered hair could be used as basic data in the field of forensic medicine.

10.Preoperative Grading Systems of Spontaneous Subarachnoid Hemorrhage.

Since the first grading system of the subarachnoid hemorrhage was introduced by Botterell in 1956, various grading systems have been presented-mostly based on Botterell's or Glasgow Coma Scale-and studied for their universal validity. At the beginning, management plan for the patients solely depended on the grade of the applied grading system but after introduction of CT and microscope into the diagnosis and surgery for the aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage and better understanding and management of vasospasm, the role of grading system has been changed to emphasize more on the predictability of the postsurgical outcome. The author reviewed the most popular and widely used grading systems to figure out their significance in predicting outcome and clinical applicability.
