OBJECTIVES: Cadherin/catenin adhesion complex is fundamentally involved in epithelial cancer invasion and metastasis. E-cadherin and EGFR colocalize on the basolateral membrane of epithelial cell and EGF down-regulate E-cadherin expression. In the invasion and metastasis of cancer, E-cadherin expression is decreased and growth factors receptor is overexpressed. The present study was aimed to find the role of E-cadherin, beta-and gamma-catenin, growth factors and its receptors in cervical cancer cell lines. METHODS: The cervical cancer cell cultures were treated with different time duration of EGF 30 ng/ml and TGF-a 10 ng/ml(0, 10 min, 20 min, 30 min, 1 hr, 2 hr, 4 hr, 8 hr, 24 hr). The change in cancer cell morphology and the changes in E-cadherin, beta- and gamma-catenin, EGFR and activated EGFR expression were studied with a western blot analysis and an immunoprecipitation. RESULTS: Through a western blot analysis, E-cadherin 120 kDa band and EGFR 170 kDa band were expressed in CaSki, HT-3 and ME-180 cell line, which showed epithelial contact growth. 1n these 3 cell lines, expression of E-cadherin did not decrease with time dependent manner. after the treatment of EGF and TGF- alpha. The expression of EGFR decreased and activated EGFR expression increased in 30 minutes to 1 hour but decreased subsequently. When the cells treated with EGF, there were no change in beta-and gamma-catenin expression with there dependent manner. The tyrosine phosphorylation of beta-and gamma-catenin increased in 30 minutes to 1 hour but decreased subsequently with activated EGFR. CONCLUSION: This study showed that an activated EGFR which has involved with tyrosine phosphorylation of beta- and gamma-catenin influenced by growth factors rather than expression of E-cadherin, has a role in the invasion and metastasis of the cervical cancer.

Clinics in Shoulder and Elbow 2017;20(4):230-235
BACKGROUND: Neer type II distal clavicle fractures have the drawback of coracoclavicular instability and insufficient distal bony fragment, thereby making it difficult to achieve adequate fixation. Although various surgical treatments have been described for Neer type II fracture, the optimal treatment remains controversial. This study reports the clinical results and usefulness of anatomical locking plate with additional K-wire fixation. METHODS: A totally of 21 patients with type II distal clavicle fracture were included in the study. The surgical procedure reduced the fracture temporarily; it included insertion of one or two K-wire from the lateral margin of the distal fragment to the proximal fragment through the fracture site, followed by application and fixation of the locking plate. The bony union and migration of K-wire was evaluated in the follow-up radiography. The coracoclavicular distance and acromioclavicular joint arthrosis were assessed at the final follow-up. The Constant Score (CS) and Korean Shoulder Score (KSS) were evaluated for clinical scoring. RESULTS: Bone union was achieved in all cases. At the final follow-up, coracoclavicular distance of the injured shoulder was increased, as compared to the intact shoulder (p=0.002), with no accompanying clinical symptoms. No K-wire migration was observed. At the final follow-up, K-wire irritation was observed in two cases and acromioclavicular arthrosis in one case, with no other adverse effects. Pain visual analogue scale, CS, and KSS were improved in all cases. CONCLUSIONS: The method of anatomical locking plate with additional K-wire fixation could be useful in achieving beneficial clinical results.

Trichorrhexis nodosa is a distinctive response of the hair shaft to physical or chemical trauma, characterized by the development of node-like swelling, through which the shaft readily fractures. We have described here a case of trichorrhexis nodosa with scanning electron microscopic findings. Nodular swelling of the affected hair showed longitudinal fissures and fractures in the cortex with loss of cuticular scales. At the site of fracture, a paintbrush-like effect was seen.

A case of hereditary papulotranslucent acrokeratoderma, a variant of familiaI punctate keratoderma, is presented. A 20-year-old female patient had a five-year history of persistent, asymptomatic, yellowish-white translucent papules and plaques on the thenar and hypothenar eminences and knuckles of both hands, and on the dorsa of proximal interphalangeal joints of both feet. She also had a vitiligo lesion on the left side of the face of 1.5 years duration. Her elder brother also had similar papular skin lesions on both hands and feet. Histologic section of a papule from the right thenar eminence showed marked hyperkeratosis, hypergranulosis, and acanthosis of the epidermis.

We report a rare case of adreno-hepatic fusion in a 63-year-old man with a traumatic hepatic rupture. The adrenal tissue was located beneath the Glisson's capsule of the liver, and measured 3.5x2x0.3 cm. On histologic examination, the ectopic tissue was composed of both adrenal cortex and medulla surrounded by a delicate capsule of connective tissue.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the possibie difference, if any, between office blood pressure(BP) and home BP may be important in the diagnosis and treatment of hypersensive patients. This report deails the difference between the two BP's and the usefulness of digital electronic sphygmomanometer(DES) for self-monitoring of home BP. METHODS: The BP's of 14 patients with essential hypertension were measured with mercury sphygmomanometers at outpatient department by physician and with DES at home(twice a day) by the patients. Patients were followed up every 2 weeks for 4 weeks and previous 2 weeks' average home BP's were compared with the office BP's of each 2 weeks' end. RESULTS: There was a significant difference between office and home BP(both systolic and diastolic) ; office average BP(151/95mmHg) was higher than home average BP(136/86mmHg). CONCLUSION: Caution may be needed in the interpretation of office BP unless it is measured several times after adequate rest.

Acute food impaction of the esophagus is not an unusual problem on an emergency ward. It has been termed the Steakhouse syndrome or the Backyard barbecue syndrome, indicating that meet is the obstrueting bolus in the majority of cases. Most esophageal stenoaes are located distally, and this ie also the area where most food impations occur. The obstruction quickly becomes apparent to the patient when further swallowing of food or liquid is impossible. Various obstructive lesions or motility disorders of the esophagus have been implicated as etiological factors in acute food impaction. Common, disorders include reflux esophagitis with stricture, hiatal hernia, abnormal rings and postoperative strictures at anastomotic sites. Malignant stenoses have been very rarely described. Recently we experienced of 4 patients who suffered from acute dysphagia after they had ingestion of food such as beef, pork, chicken, and dog meat, repectively. All of them were diagnased as steakhouse syndrome due to acute food impaction of the esophageal after examinations of esophagogram and endoscopy. They had hiatal hernia, esophageal cancer, reflux esophagitis with stricture, and abnormal ring as underlying diseases, repectively. All of them were treated with endoseopic removal of foreign body by a Dormia basket.
