Myxofibrosarcomas (MFSs), which consist of multiple nodules with a variable cellular population in a myxoid matrix, are primarily located in subcutaneous tissue. Pleomorphic hyalinizing angiectatic tumors (PHATs) are rare soft-tissue tumors characterized by a proliferation of highly pleomorphic spindle or polygonal cells and abundant ectatic blood vessels in cellular or myxoid stroma. We present here an unusual case of a high-grade MFS with a PHAT-like appearance. A 67-year-old man presented with an asymptomatic subcutaneous mass in the right forearm. The tumor had myxoid, hypo-, and hypercellular areas with highly pleomorphic spindle or polygonal tumor cells that showed frequent mitoses and nuclear pseudoinclusions. Foci of punctuate necrosis and inflammatory infiltration were present throughout the tumor, and abundant ectatic, thick-walled vessels containing blood clots were noted. The tumor cells were immunohistochemically positive for vimentin but negative for CD34, S-100 protein, smooth muscle actin, desmin, and bcl-2.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study is to obtain the accurate information on the obesity indices, such as body mass index(BMI), relative weight and waist-hip ratio(WHR) and to investigate their relationship in order to assess the childhood and adolescent obesity more appropriately. METHODS: In May, 1995, a total of 6943(male; 3469, female; 3474) students from primary, middle and high schools in Seoul were selected and each students height, weight, waist and hip circumference data were collected. RESULTS: The BMI increased with age in both sexes. From age 12 to 16, values of BMI 50th percentiles for females exceeded those for males. And the BMI 95th percentiles at the age of 13 to 14 years were higher for females than for males. The prevalence of obesity by relative weight was higher in males than in females(male ; 17.9%, female ; 13.1%). The WHR was higher in males than females in all age group and decreased with age in both sexes, showing more sharp reduction in females. Strong correlations were observed between the BMI and the relative weight, and the BMI and the relative weight correlated closely with WHR. The WHR was significanly higher in obese group' than in non-obese group. In the female obese group aged 6 to 11 years, no significant correlation was found between the relative weight and the WHR. CONCLUSIONS: There were significant relationships between the indices of obesity and body fat distribution. This study suggests that WHR as well as BMI and relative weight might be useful in assessing the childhood and adolescent obesity.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined gender differences on sociodemographic factor and clinical feature among patients with schizophrenia and the impact of family history on gender differences of clinical course and clinical characteristics. METHOD: Patients who admitted to Seoul National Mental Hospital from March 1996 to September 1996 and met the diagnostic criteria for schizophrenia by DSM-N were studied. The number of patients was 177(92 men and 85 women), among them with family history of first degree relatives schizophrenia was 33(13 men 20 women). Sociodemographic factor, age of onset, duration of illness, number of admission, dosage of antipsychotics(chlorprormazine equivalent), past history of suicidal attempts and clinical symptoms assessed by Brief psychiatric Rating Scale(BFRS) and Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale(PANSS) were compared by gender. Furthermore, gender differences of clinical features were compared by presene or absence of family history. RESULTS: There were no gender differences in education, religions, occupational status, family history, duration of illness, number of admission, dosage of drugs, suicidal attempts and clinical subtypes, but more female schizophrenic patients were married and age of onset was significantly earlier in male patients. In clinical symptoms were compared with PANSS, negative type is significantly more in male patients but positive type is more in female, with BPRS, perceptul-thought disturbance factor and anxiety-depression factor were significantly higher in female patients. The age of onset was no significantly different in family history positive group but significantly earlier onset of male patients in negative group. Clinical symptoms with BFRS were no significant differences in family history positive group, but perceptual-thought disturbance factor and anxiety-depression factor were higher in female patients in negative group. CONCLUSIONS: The findings coupled with reports from other investigators, support that both gender and genetic loading contribute to the heterogeneity of schizophrenia.

The assocication between human papillomavirus infection (HPV) and cervical lesionhas been well established. for detection and typing human papilloma virus deoxyribonucleic acid in cervical tissues, Southern blot hybridzation and polymerase chain reaction are commonly regarded as reference standard methods. However it has the limitation includeing technical difficulty, safety, subjectivey in result interpretation. Recently the chemilnuminescent molecular hybridization assay method has been windely used and it has been known that it can detect less hybridization assay method has been windely used and it has been known that it can detect less then 1 pg of DNA in a 100n1 aliquot of a crude specimen. This study was perfomed to determine the usefulness of hybrid capture HPV DNA assay for detecting low-risk and high-risk human papillomaviruses in histologically confirmed normal, cervical intraepithelial lesion(CIN) and invasive squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix, and to compare the correlation among cervical cytology, hiopsy finding and HPVs infelction ,and to detirmine whether the additon of the hybrid capture test to cytologic studies would improve the ability to identify signifcant lesions. Cervical cytologic smears, hybrid capture HPVs DNA assay, and pucnh bhiopsies were performed on 78 women who have normal cervix(28cases),cervical intraepithelila lesion (24cases), and invasive squamous cell carcinoma(26cases). At first the probes for low-risk HPV(6,11,42,43,44) and the proves for high-risk HPV(16,18,31,33,35,45,51,52,56)were used and secondly retyping was done for HPV 16 abd 18 in high-risk HPV positive cases.the results obtained were as follows; 1. Low-risk HPVs infections were 14.3% and 8.3% in normal cervix and cervical intraepithelial lesion respectively. High-risk HPVs infection were 7.1%, 70.8% and 73.1% in normal cervix, cervical intraeithelial lesion and squamous cell carcinoma respecitively. These was highly significant corelation between positive high-risk HPVs test, cervical intraepithelial lesion and squamous cell carcinoma. 2. Positivities of low and high-risk human papillomaviruses in patients with negative cytologic result were 9.1% and 15.1% respectinvely. 3. In patients with high-risk human papillomaviruses infection, human papilloma viurs 16 and 18 types were detected in 47.4% and 13.2%, respectinvely, and both HPV 16 and 18 positive and negative detention were 15.7% 23.7% respectinvely. Among 12patinent of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia with high risk HPVs infection, HPV 16 was detected in 66.6% and HPV 18 in 16.7% Among 24 squamous cell carcinomas with high risk HPVs infection, HPV 16was detected in 41.7% and HPV 16 in 12.5% and both HPV and 18 in 25% 4. In patients without koilocytosis by cervical tytology, low and high-risk human papillomaviruses or both were positive in 30.7% 5. In patients with positive high-risk HPVs, sensitivitives of koilocytosis were 64% and 69% in histologic and cytologc diagnosis, and specificities and specifictites were 58.5% and 62% respectively. Above result suggest that detection for high-risk human papilloma viruses type by hybrid capture assay improves the management of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and is more useful method over cervical cytology only.

PURPOSE: Patients with stroke suffer from physical disabilities, followed by mental instability. Their caregivers also suffer from mental instability. The present study attempted to address the degree and the change of the level of Purpose in Life (PIL) in patients with stroke and caregivers by applying art therapy using colors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-eight stroke patients with a good functional recovery or a moderate disability and their 28 caregivers were selected and evaluated. The period of the study between the stroke and color therapy was more than 6 months. Patients and caregivers were divided into the color therapy (28) and control groups (28). A questionnaire, which measures the level of PIL was conducted separately for patients and caregivers prior to the first session of color therapy (2 hours per week, total 16 sessions). The final examination was performed 5 months after the last color therapy session. RESULTS: There was significant difference between before and after color therapy when the level of PIL was measured both in patients and caregivers (p<0.01). These were the same between the color therapy group, compared with the control group (p<0.01). As color therapy progressed to the late phase, patients and caregivers applied increasing number of colors and color intensity. CONCLUSION: These results prove that color therapy will improve PIL of the patients with post-stroke disability and caregivers. Furthermore, color therapy would be a useful adjuvant for improving the quality of life of the patients with stroke and their caregivers.
